I have not been happy with my color for several years, and decided to find a new colorist. I remembered Peter from his days as a more junior colorist at another salon, as he always seemed to be customer focused and conscientious about his work. I found him at Miwa Alex, and now I could not be more happy with my color. He took a long time to determine what he would do to address my concerns, and the result of his efforts are perfect. I will not lose track of him again!

Recently moved to the Big Apple and found myself desperate for a new look. Through a recommendation, I booked an appointment with Regina for a color and cut. So far this has been my FAVORITE experience since my big move. I was completely flustered, had no idea what I wanted, basically a stylist worst night...argh. Regina sat me down and for the first 20 minutes of my appointment we talked just about what would look good. She was extremely patient and knowledgeable.End result was stunning and I mean stunning! New color, new cut, new me! I felt like a million dollars. Not only was Regina a professional but her assistant Pat, provided me with the best hair washing/head massage.
Great experience and a wonderful relationship has formed with Miwa Alex.
Having been a customer since the salon opened, it is consistently one of my happiest experiences. It starts with great service -- the stylists are first rate, they are friendly and put you first. The relaxing shampoo ""beds"" are a great way to unwind, as you get your hair washed. And I've always walked out feeling great about the experience and about my hair.
You get terrific value for your money. It is not the most expensive salon and Ive always left feeling I got so much more for what I paid than I could get in any other salon.
The staff goes out of their way to make you comfortable. I've had my hair cut by several of the salon's stylists and each one brings their own gifts and approach.
Barbara always has the customer's interest in mind and I've seen her do extraordinary things to bring new customers in and to keep her existing customers coming back.
Miwa Alex Salon is a place you should DEFINITELY try!
I went to see Regina on Saturday after my friend meet me for drinks last Thursday with the cutest short cut .She was so sweet and took quiet a bit of time with me I've had long hair for a while and was feeling board I thought I'd have
to go shorter for a big change she told me if I'm not ready for that DON'T go short . We left it long with soft long layers and I feel so good .My shampoo on the lay down bed was so relaxing .Thank You Regina

I am 64 years old, and this is the first time I have ever written a public complaint, so you can imagine how bad my experience must have been. I went to Miwa-Alex six weeks ago, with a brand new head of white hair that had grown back after I successfully completed chemotherapy for Stage IV cancer. I wanted my hair to be blonde. This was a very happy moment to me; I was moving away from chemo and cancer by making my hair ""mine"" again. I informed colorist Regina of my situation; post-chemo hair may require special treatment; and to be safe, I wanted vegetable, not permanent, hair color. Regina assured me of her competence. When I walked out that day, I had paid just under $100 for vegetable dye and a trim. My hair looked...kind of still white, only duller. I figured I just needed to put in permanent color, and it would be more blonde. I consulted my oncologist, got permission, and went back and got permanent color put in. Regina took $25 off the bill, and when I walked out, I was okay with it. A week later, though, it had faded considerably. Nobody saw it as blonde! I went back a third time, this time with a photograph of what I wanted: wheat-blonde hair with dimension, either lowlights or highlights. Regina commenced arguing with me, saying Yes it looks blonde; this is what you said you wanted; etc etc I said, Okay but today, I have to walk out with hair that is blonde, and has some dimension. She put in a brand new base color and a full head of lowlights to add depth. I walked out not sure, having now spent an additional $200--all told, $400! Within a week, the color faded to what it is today: a monochrome off-blonde gray. I am not rich. This is all the money I have for my hair color. I took a picture of myself with my new ""blonde"" hair right above a shot of me with the original hair I walked in with. The before is white, and the after is gray. I sent these two photos to Miwa Alex in a letter asking for a refund. I addressed it to the owner. I got a call, though, not from the owner but from Barbara, another colorist. She said Miwa Alex does not do refunds, but would I come in? I said no, at this point I didn't trust them any longer; and I wanted at least a partial refund, and please have the owner call me. Instead, Barbara called again. She repeated that I should come in, she just wanted to make me happy, and I said Look, I've just been through cancer, I have to be careful of stress. If I come in, and you start arguing with me--that's not going to work for me. She assured me again, she wanted me to be happy. Now listen to this. I did go in today, on a day when my life was incredibly busy (I am teaching an all-day seminar tomorrow) for a 2:00 appointment with Barbara. I brought a picture of hair exactly like I wanted. And she starts to argue with me. I took a breath, and said, Look, I need to be careful of stress, so if you need to argue, I will leave. And Barbara said, ""Good leave, because you are f---king crazy."" She snapped this, and then, ""Now get out."" Yes, folks. But that's not all. Barbara hectored me at the door, telling me that I'm too focused on looking good, that I should be more focused on important things now that I've had cancer--and then she went on to compare me unfavorably to others she has known who had cancer, who, it seems, cared more about the important things. Wow. I've only cried a few times throughout my entire ordeal, and today was one of those times. For the love of everything human and compassionate--not to mention for the sake of the most basic professionalism, NEVER EVER GO TO MIWA-ALEX. If they can treat a cancer patient this way--a person for whom the return of hair should be a joyous, wonderful thing--they can treat anybody brutally. And that's exactly what they did.

It is incredibly difficult to find a colorist in new york city that is worth the price. I have been all over this city searching for a person that could give me beautiful blonde highlights that I really enjoy going to see. Now with a review long overdue it's been 3 years with Peter and I will never see anyone else. He has a strict attention to detail. His highlights are natural, neat, and as close to the to the root as you can get. He even folds the foil over a 5x7 card board square everytime he highlights even the tiniest piece. Peter also works with me to tailor my hair to the season, we do lowlights during fall/winter and what we call (pornstar blonde) which really is still very natural during the spring/summer. He truly listens - I told him I want ashy and he choses the appropriate toner to bring the color up a notch to get the total look. He is also a very generous highlighter when I get a half of head he does pieces underneath as well so when I put it in a pony it looks cohesive. I love Peter. If your searching for great color - halt the hounds and get to Miwa Alex Salon. I will personally guarantee from one over analyzing color control freak to another that you will not be disappointed :) and if you are Peter will fix it free of charge.

Want the best haircut in New York City? Try Nathalie Herve at Miwa-Alex Salon. I have not trusted my hair cuts to anyone else since meeting Nathalie nearly 15 years ago. I have very fine dead straight hair which is difficult to handle, and shows any misstep with the scissors! But in all that time, I have never left Nathalie with any feeling other than one of complete satisfaction of a job well done. She is such a professional! It's almost as if she examines each strand individually to get it just right. Despite having a following of loyal devotees, Nathalie is always available within a few days of calling for an appointment as she treats her clients as friends, and accommodates their schedule. Always on time, she is supported by a very friendly staff who help to make your time at Miwa-Alex productive and pleasant.

I let a friend of a friend at a very notable salon in Williamsburg,BK talk me into going silver/purple for a more edgy look, I am a blonde. At first I thought it looked okay but as the days wore on I realized my hair looked like a witches weave! It was horrible! nothing in my wardrobe matched my hair, and the color did nothing for my face at all. Three days later I was at work and after coming from the ladies room and seeing my horrible hair in the mirror once again I panicked, I left work in the middle of the day to find anyone that could help fix my hair. For some reason I thought Ricky's near union square would be helpful and quick fix as they have a salon in the back, one employee was so awful to me I left in tears he laughed at my hair and said he could not help me and was too busy (he seemed to be doing nothing). I didn't give up, I kept walking around like a crazed person with bad hair and stumbled upon Miwa-Alex a salon. I have always thought it was cute from the outside and pass by the salson from time to time as it is near my office. I thought to myself there is no way they are going to take me on the spot, but they did! Peter fixed my hair and it looks amazing he took the blue and grey out of my hair with care, and made me a blonde again , a very pretty shade of blonde I might add. He seemed more like a good friend then a stylist and really listened and gave me advice on my hair. He really knows what he is talking about and I plan on going back. He has no idea but he really saved me he is my angel! I do print modeling from time to time and booked a pretty big client for next week based on photos with me with blonde hair. If I had gone in with that witchy horrible grey blue hair I most likely would have lost the job. Now my hair looks fresh, pretty and blonde! Peter even gave me a quick trim when he did not have to (he had other clients) but seemed to have timing very well balanced no one went neglected. Peter is also a perfectionist so if you want your hair done perfectly go to Peter!!! I also never ever write reviews- this is my first, but something had to be said about the service I received. Also the rest of the staff are all super friendly from the front desk girl to the lady who washed/massaged my head. THANK YOU!!! I know all of this sounds rather dramatic yesterday Peter renewed my faith in humanity.

I never have a more amazing experience then when I come and visit Nathalie at Miwa-Alex Salon. My hair cut gets constant compliments and is so easy to style and manage. I have been coming to Nat for over fifteen years and she is the most consistent cutter that I have ever experienced. Some call themselves professionals, but Nathalie is a true professional.
I recommend her to everyone and I travel over sixty miles to use her service. Her style and skills are tre bien!
I LOVE my hair cutter! She is an artist!

Nathalie has listened closely to what I want done to my hair for more than 15 years. She is a careful, talented professional--and a delightful person, too. I grew up in NYC, consider myself a woman of taste and style who wouldn't tolerate a bad haircut for a month--let alone 15 years. Nathalie is a true pro.

Something is up with Nathalie. After going to her for 10+ years, I can not go back. She gave me a too-short, single-length bob-like mess that lopped off my curls and was completely bizarre. This was actually the second time she seemed to forget who I was and what haircuts she had been giving me. After the first weird cut I gave her the benefit of the doubt--but this one was dramatically bad: she kept telling me that it was fine, but it was NOT fine. And she took off a good four inches when we had talked about two. Even the assistants looked embarrassed. Sorry, Nathalie. What happened to you?

So...when I met Regina, I asked a normal question...""What could you do with THIS????"" as I pointed to my my overcolored, frizzy, damaged, shapeless hair.
She looked, and surprisingly started to ask questions about me. What do I do? How much time do I have? And, refreshingly...she actually had opinions about what should happen to repair my icky, lifeless locks. And, guess what..she delivered! My longish hair stayed long. My colour is brilliant. The style she cut makes me look younger and better than ever. My hair is healthy. I can wear it curly or straight; she taught me how to make both happen. I get compliments all the time!
Also, Regina is a truly lovely woman. It's a pleasure to speak with her as she is funny and sensistive. It's said that one always remembers how a person makes you feel. Well, Regina makes me feel and look beautiful. Thanks, Regina, if you read this! You're the best!
i LOVE my hair!
Let me tell you that I'm not one who regularly WRITES reviews - even though I go to CitySearch every day to READ reviews... so you have to know how very special Peter Ripley must be for me to take the time to tell you just how wonderful a colorist he TRULY is.
About 4 years ago I stumbled onto Peter (at his old salon) through the owner of that salon (to remain nameless). Peter took me on a day that my regular colorist (the owner) had called out ""sick""... but that ended up being MY benefit. Little did I know that Peter happened to be the BETTER colorist. Yes, it has to do with his background in Textiles... it has to do with the way he makes me feel like I'm the only client he has while he's with me... and yes, it has to do with his tremendous talent of making my hair color look like I was BORN with it.
As you can see, I'm truly enamored with Peter for even MORE reasons than I can list here... but what I go to him for is BEAUTIFUL HAIR... and that's what I get every single time... plus the benefit of knowing such a lovely man.
I have seen my new hair colorist, Peter Ripley, at this wonderful little jewel of a salon on 22nd Street about 4 times now... and I have never in my life been happier with my hair. He made this already young grandmother look even better... and even though I don't know how he did it, I love him for making me feel so good! He is sweet and down to earth and I highly recommend Peter Ripley for hair color!

I have been going to Nathalie for 10 years. She is wonderful at transforming thick unruly wavy hair into a fashionable haircut. However for the last 2 years I have wanted a change and grew my hair out to a longer length. I loved it-the versatility, the curls. It was romantic and classic. A few days ago I went for a trim and walked out with a whacked out, wigged out piecey mop. If you are a downtown girl and like a haircut that looks like your hair was electricuted then she is the stylist for you. If you are like me and like a classic look run. What I found is that Nathalie will only deliver the style she envisions but is unable to hear what the client wants. I will be spending my holidays locked in the bathroom crying until my hair grows out.

Regina is an artist at heart but what makes her such a great stylist is her ability to listen and create a look that meets your lifestyle! I didn't want a cut that would take me an hour every morning to style and she really listened! I've received so many compliments on my new cut. I have thick curly hair that I wear curly on humid/wet days and blow it out on others - Regina understands both. She also takes the time to show you how to achieve the best blowout yourself and has even drawn me a picture so I won't forget! As an added bonus the unique ""bed"" that they use to wash your hair is full permission to relax and be pampered! The salon has a great relaxed atmosphere.
