This was our second time, the first round was amazing! This time was a pre fixed menu for Valentines Day. I don't know what happened from 3yrs ago, but everything I ate was weird, and not good at all. I had huge pieces of cilantro, and thyme stuck in my teeth. I just didn't get it, I had no idea what I was eating, it was gross! 300.00 later, we left hungry and really disappointed. Also the place was really dirty, the walls need to be clean and yuck in the picture frames, the whole place needs a good cleaning. Don't waste your time or money, 300.00, for dinner for two and 1 French martini.

My husband and I went to NYC for dinner at Mesa Grill to try another one of Bobby Flays restaurants. We have been to two of his other restaurants in CT many of times, so we had high expectations. We had made reservations which is a must or you will be waiting a while. After being sat we sat there for 10 before a bus person came to fill our water glasses. 15 min later our waitress came over to say how she will be back in a little bit. No introduction took place on her part and she said she would go over the menu and that never happen. She took our drink order walked away then came back a couple of minutes later to ask what I had ordered again. We were asked if there was any food allergies and I am lactose intolerant and instead of going over the menu with me, she told me I would have to speak with a manager. After we placed our order a manager walked by asking how everything was and we mentioned how our experience was. Overall we got an appetizer and dessert on the house and the food was wonderful. As for the atmosphere if you want a quiet place to have dinner this isn't it. Very loud and tables are on top of each other.

My family went to eat at Bobby Flays Mesa Grill a few years ago to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The food was exceptional and we had a great time. We just went back a few weeks ago and I was very disappointed and will never go back. It isn't worth the money and I can make better dishes at home. My son ordered a octopus dish that was overcooked, my lobster was not fresh, and the sides were okay but not exceptional. My sons steak was very good and the oysters were great but I will not go back. Too many great restaurants out there. I think Bobby Flay is too busy with his TV Show to make sure that his restaurant is top notch.

Their web-site mention 18% Gratuity added to parties of 8 or more.
However they charge us 20% last night. well. few dollars is not big deal to us.
We just don't fell service and food worth 20% for them.

Until now I have been a BIG fan of Bobby Flay & the Food Network gang. I own all of his cook books, and am an admirer of his skills and a fan of all his shows. Bobby Flay's modern fusion of classical southwestern cooking with modern american cuisine and real star quality have jazzed me. So when the gentlemen I've been dating surprised me with a reservation at Mesa Grill - I was THRILLED!
UNFORTUNATELY my experience with my ideal restaurant was absolutely TERRIBLE on every level possible.
We arrived and received a stink eye from the service staff at the reservation booth soon as we entered. We had dressed up for the evening, and despite our dapper attire, our age and tattoos obviously downgraded us to lower class status in their eyes, and we were treated as such. They did seat us within 5 mins of our reservation time on a busy night, but the maître d' was a total prick. He wouldn't even look us in the eye. He actually shoved the table in while seating us and smashed the leg of the table down on my foot and didn't even apologize.
The waitress was very condescending to us, she mocked my every selection, from my drink order to my specifications of being a non dairy vegetarian. When I asked her what they could make without cheese and animal bi-products, she began to explain each item to me like I was in elementary school. When I selected something on the menu - a Sophie's salad without the cheese and dressing - she gave me a very condescending ""Ooooo-K"" and then insisted I order more because that clearly wasn't enough, and mentioned I had interrupted her before she could finish explaining the other dishes. I felt very talked down to, and though she served with a smile, it wasn't without a very glaring judgmental attitude.
Our food arrived in good time. It was decently sized portions, but VERY POOR in quality. I ordered the Sophia Salad sans the dressing and cheese, and basically got a plate of lettuce shreds, canned beans and diced tomatoes. Not to mention a few of the ""pitted nicoise olives"" listed in the ingredients actually had pits in them!!! Which I did in fact hurt my teeth chomping down on. We also ordered sides of sautéed spinach and smoked chile collard greens. These came in two small bowls and were both SOGGY piles of green MUSH. They were disgusting.
Overall I am highly disappointed in the service and the food at Mesa Grill. For a world class chef like Bobby Flay, I would expect his staff to have at least common courtesy and for the food to not be so crappy.
I apologized to my date for spending so much on such a poor dining experience. I've gotten better food and service at Pubs on Bleecker st than I got at Mesa Grill.

Went to for a business lunch. Ordered a bottle of red wine (not cheap, but regardless) it was HOT, like it was stored in kitchen next to the stoves.....that surprised me because of the reputation of Bobby F. Then the food was ok...everything spiced....almost to point of over spiced. With some bites, could not tell what you were eating because the spices overpowered the meal. I had their Rib Eye, which I have had better at home. Quality seemed a bit low. My co-worker had the NY strip and it was better. Fries were great and the desserts were good as well. Overall nice place, just expected food and service to be much much better! I would have gone to Blue Smoke around the corner if I knew it was like that. Shame when these chefs forget about their roots and just become marketing machines....their craft does suffer.

You know when you go to those places that are just too big and popular, and they sort of forget where they came from? I feel like that's what happened to Mesa Grill. Not that I'd ever been here before, but I'm sure when it first opened that it was excellent. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but it could have been better.
Bobby Flay is known for being king of sauces and puts his southwestern flare on everything. It's pretty evident in the menu...everything is 'spiced' or 'rubbed with spices' or whatever. As an appetizer, we got the tuna nachos. They were actually really good, and the tuna had a nice kick. I ended up getting the steak as an entree. It had spice, but was a little too charred, even medium-rare. The sauce made it work, but the char was a little too overpowering.
Overall, Mesa Grill is a nice place to try, but not a place you'll go more than once. I love watching Bobby Flay on food network, and I've been to Bar Americain, which was great, but this place almost seemed too popular. It was your typical big NY restaurant, but it should always start with the food.

Mesa Grill and Bolo definitely showcases chef Bobby Flay's style. The flavor combinations are surely memorable. The salmon tartare was light and tasty. My mahi mahi was deliscious and just as beautiful. However, I have to compliment the chocolate peanut butter flan. I thought...hmmm, comfort food. Was I surprised! The flan tasted like an elegant reese's peanut butter cup. I would come back just for this dessert. The table's were close enough that we just started conversing with our neighboring tables and had a pleasant evening.

Restauant week special was $35. For that I got a huge looking bowl of soup (bowl was huge, but very shallow, to disguise the small amount of ok tasting soup) a quarter of a chicken (tasty but way too small) a scoop of warm potato salad, billed on the menu as something else, and a desert consisting of a piece of pineapple upside down cake, smaller than a cup cake, and a melon ball sized scoop of vanilla ice cream. If you're hungry, go elsewhere.

This restaurant was awesome! I got dragged by my friends to attend this place during restaurant week which to me usually goes along w/ bad service and even worse food..but this place was definitelly an exception. our food was amazing, and definitelly very original...I am a big foodie and often visit celebrity chef restaurants, but latelly all the food - although good, has been pretty much the same everywhere. this one is definitelly unique, with the southwestern full bodied flavors, just enough spice and lots of creativity. But the service is what really shone...When one of my friends complained that her chicken was slightly dry the waitor right away offered her something else although she clearly already ate half of it...during the 3 minute wait for the next dish a manager came up and bought us drinks for our whole table..the whole night everyone was very attentive, and the suggestions they made were right on. Bobby, I love your shows, and you have definitelly not let me down. I cant wait to come back to this place and try everything else.

This place needs to be updated, badly. The decor is straight out of the 90's. The food is pretty good but nothing that special. Service was okay, moderate wait for the table. Surely Bobby Flay realizes this place needs a facelift and menu update. I guess he is just coasting on the steady stream of tourists that were coming in as I was there. Probably some of the best mark-ups in the biz in this place.

The food was not what a Bobby Flay fan would expect. It was bland and the double baked potato was ice cold. I think he should wear a beard or some disguise and check his homework. Ramsey would have a field day in there. They seemed like they were trying pretty hard to succeed but just didn't. I had high hopes. Maybe too high. Maybe watching too much food channel. All in all pretty pricey. Not bad but not worth the tag. Might give it another try. Might not.

Let's just say my girlfriends and I walked out of the restaurant, halfway through our meal due to a visitor in our tabe AHHHHH!!!! My friend pointed out that I had a cacaroche (city search bans the true word from reviews... hmmm... conspiracy much?) crawling on me, we screamed to high heaven, and a bus boy came and put it in a napkin and ran to the kitchen. Next thing I knew I was asking for the manager, who was a person with too much attitude.... and tried to debate with me whether it was a cacaroche or a water roche... like manager, an inch long brown roche was crawling on me... do I really need to debate semantics here??
Anyways who knows if the perp was actually a cacaroche or water roche... either way I'm never going back there!
Just as a note, when we walked out, a woman at the front who had just finished eating said ""Oh you guys had a cacaroche by your table too?""

We had no trouble with customer service what so ever. On the contrary, our waitress recommended wonderful dishes (Goat Cheese Dip for an ap, Pork Tenderloin for an entree- seriously good!), our food was prompt, we were seated only about 3 minutes after our scheduled reservation. We all agreed that it was a fantastic night! Our total bill for 3 people was $120 (no alcohol or dessert, one shared ap and 3 entrees). We sat at a very comfortable 4 seat table which was great. I could see that the tables for 2 may have been a little close together, but honestly no worse than in other restaurants I've been in. This is NYC. Space is not overly abundant. But although it may have been slightly cozy, I really don't think it would have been a showstopper. I definitely recommend!

Just went there for the first time last saturday since me and my wife both are fans of Iron Chef and Throwdown.As soon as we got in the server took us to our table.we were ordered the spicy chicken and my wife ordered chicken with sweet potatoes.The bread basket came which was decent but everything went downhill from there the plates came they looked wonderful but didnt taste any good its was without any taste and little burned the home potatoes i ordered were old and warmed in microwave i complained to the waiter but he ignored and told me that if i dont like it we dont have to come back so we paid our bill left .Once we got out we went to a hot dog stand and had the best hot dog of our life....All that glitters is not gold.

Am guessing the staff thinks Mesa means mess in Spanish- Awful experience. Arrived on a Monday night and was greeted by hosts who looked frightened by people. We weren't really given a good estimate as to when we would actually be seated but am guessing some people shouldn’t have to bore you with details about how long a wait is when you have a reservation. Big crowd in the waiting area while there were seats open. Even more amazing is that they were turning away walk-ins with a supposed wait while there tables. Losing revenue in times like these, I should have taken that as a hint and ran while I still had a chance. Our waiter was apologizing for how busy it was and we did feel bad for him, it looked like he was the only person manning a large number of tables. They were severely understaffed. Managers fluttering about and not stopping by tables to ask how things were given how crazy things were looking. Felt like I was in a bad episode of Hell’s kitchen. Bobby Flay should really re-visit this restaurant and get back to basics.

For our 24th anniversary my wife & I decided to eat at the Mesa Grill. We have eaten at fine restaurants around the world. (Paris, London, Germany, Arizona, California, Florida, etc.)
We had a wonderful experience here. We had the Blue Corn Pancake for an appetizer, I had the Sixteen Spice Duck breast, and my wife had the Mahi Mahi.
Every dish was unique and flavorFULL! Even the sides stood on their own.
I have read that some have not enjoyed their experience, but we did not experience any of those things.
I highly recommend this restaurant and we will return!
