I live just around the corner on 17th St., so have been watching the progress of Steak Frites since its return to 16th St. (I had such a dismal experience when it was Union Prime that I swore to never return. But the original Steak Frites was a favorite haunt, that I felt I had to give it a try.)
Yes, they were definitely off to a bad start. I was there twice in June & couldn't tell if there was anyone in the kitchen or my server had to go back there & cook my food himself- slow & tasteless (in fact, I had the same exact problems as Myata below- cold & slow food)!
However, a neighbor that also lives on 17th St. had me meet her for a drink last week- & what a difference! The staff was smiling this time, unlike the aforementioned 2 times when everyone seemed either flustered or lost (which was odd since the place was empty both times I went previously).
We sat at the bar with no intention of eating, until a server walked by with a steak & mussels. I knew immediately that there was a new chef. Curious, my friend & I ordered the Tuna Tartare. Then the Fig/Goat Cheese salad. Then ended up splitting the steak w/ bearnaise- delicious! So was the berry shortcake dessert!
I've been back twice more in the past week, sitting for full dinners both times. On both occasions my server was helpful & attentive- not at all like the lost souls that used to work there. In chatting with them, I learned that there is now a new chef & new management. Kudos to them for improving the food & getting rid of the lifeless zombies that worked there at the beginning of Summer.
Steak Frites still has some snags- needs a better wine list, more menu offerings- but does seem well on its way. I'll keep my eye out on them & let you know more...

I decided to try their brunch menu on a Sunday, and I was so thrilled with my restaurant choice! This place sets the example of quality customer service. I can't explain how wonderful their customer service is.Everyone at the restaurant makes sure that you are taken care of, and I just absolutely loved it!!! You are the best!

My family was THRILLED to hear that they re-opened at the old 16th Street location. Our staple weekend brunch/celebrations restaurant was back!
Boy were we dissapointed.
The decor is just cheezy, I hope they inherited that scheme from the previous tenant and are planning to change it soon.
But they were clearly having kichen issues. Nothing was timed right, after a pretty long initial wait all 5 plates arrived at different times. The mussles came cold, perhaps because they were on an open soup bowl (holds something like 20) with no broth! The side of fries came 10 mins later, only partially cooked. The salmon was late (we understand the 1st plate was over cooked so they made up a new plate). The sandwiches were good but not up to the old standard.
The staff was nice and pleasant.
Sorry but I don't think we will be going back.

Steak Frites used to be one of my staples for a weekend brunch; however, that will no longer be the case. So you can understand my excitement when they reopened in the same location in Union Square! However, my initial excitement turned into disappointment. What used to be a booming Sunday afternoon worth waiting the 20 minutes to get seated for, has turned into a sad, state of affairs. There were only about 3 tables total filled at 1:30 - the height of brunch time. And I soon found out why. Though still advertised on the Web site and something that was a feature when Steak Frites originally held the space, they do not offer a prixe fix brunch. On top of that, I ordered the croque monsieur, only to be told that the chef decided that they wouldn't offer it that day. So, I ordered the italiano eggs (which I was already skeptical about given that it was a French restaurant!), as well as an $8 glass of sauvingon blanc. When they brought the glass of wine, it was barely filled 1/8 of the way. It appeared that I was given just the taste that you get in nicer restaurants before they pour the full glass out of the bottle. I spoke up, and was given attitude when I spoke up that it was a skimpy pour.... I will say that the food tasted good - although the description of my eggs did not mention spinach which could have been a problem if I was allergic or didn't like it. All in all, I cannot recommend this place, s it's not worth the money, the attitude from the staff, the not knowing if you can get what they print on the menu, or the dismal, nonexistent crowd.

We had lunch at Steak Frites at the new location on 16th street by Union Square. Inside, the decor is as tasteful as their cusine. Bold reds, rich blacks and French flair boasts a chic look. I recommend the soft shell crabs for an apitizer. For my main dish, I had a Salad St. Tropez which was a tasteful blend of tuna, shrimp, avacado and greens. The other ladies I lunched with raved about the steak frites, salmon and crab cakes. I am not a fan of dessert but the decadent menu had us begging to sample three delictable desserts. The chocolate de creme was delicious as well as the all the other desserts. Excellent!

Steak Frites would be a decent place to stop in for a beer and a plate of truffle frites, but after this restaurant week visit we are definitely not going back for dinner or ordering wine there again.
The bartender, who knew nothing about wine, refused to accept that the glass of wine she served my girlfriend had spoiled ""...I just opened a new bottle"". There's a differnence between ""I don't like this"" and ""It's Vinegar"". At least pour the manager a sample and ask for a 2nd opinion! Both our meats came rare instead of medium-rare. We ordered an extra appetizer which arrived with the main courses instead of, as we requested, with the salads. The pastry in the Profiterole Arabica was chewy and overcooked. To top it all off, they tried to overcharge us $10. Overall, very disappointing, although the truffle frites are ridiculously rich if you're in the neighborhood.

Steak Frites used to be a solid option for anyone that likes thier food and drink. Something's changed vs. the last 6 times I've been there. Last night we were there with a group of 5 on a last minute reservation. Service was lackluster, food was mediocre, wine recomendation poor. The steak I had for dinner was so salty, I didn't finish. I finish everything. Might have been just an off night, but we won't likely go back.

It was okay. But when I got my check and saw that my vodka collins was seventeen dollars, I was shocked. You could buy a whole bottle of vodka at that price. maybe they marked up the price because it's restaurant week, maybe not. Either way I won't be going back. Plus, the waitstaff kept trying to take our plates away before we were done.

7/24/2008-dinner with my fiance. We were excited about trying this restaurant, heard about the steak and the fries. We started off with drinks, the Pinot Grigio was awful...and for $9/glass (which was not even half full) you would expected at least drinkable. and the $14 LI ice tea...all you can taste is the tequilla and nothing else. The crab cakes for appetizer was not bad, and the clam & corn chowder was very well prepared, creamy but not too heavy. The SALMON & SCALLOP EN PAPILLOTE entree was the worst thing I've ever tasted. The salmon made the scallop taste overwhelmingly fishy and completely overwhelmed the taste of scallop to the point of I wasn't even sure what I was eating. the salmon was tasteless, over cooked, and had the texture of brown paper bags. Absolutely Awful! The STEAK FRITES DE PARIS, NY strip cut was not a good cut, very tough, and I had it medium rare. The way it was prepared was commendable, but the texture was not desireable. The fries were good, but the onion rings we ordered on the side was disappointing-soggy, oilly, and plain lacking in flavor. The dessert: PROFITEROLE ARABICA was enjoyable, but nothing to be impressed about. If you're craving a good steak I would suggest spending the extra money and go to Capital Grille, Peter Lugers, Bobby Van's. The only thing I would order from here again, if I was to be so unfortunate to go there again, would be the fries.

Last January this longtime mainstay on East 16th Street moved to the corner of Varick and Clarkson in the West Village. The decor and ambiance are authentically French bistro, with a wide, sweeping bar that encircles the dining area, large, Hector Guimard- like Paris Metro Art Deco windows and very comfortable tables and dining chairs. The food on the eclectic menu equals the surroundings: superb burgers, generous salads, the freshest fish and the best moules frites in town. All the meat and fish come from the finest purveyors and all the dishes are reasonably priced. The wine list, under the supervision of wine director extraordinaire David Oleas, is comprehensive and fairly-priced and the service, overseen by ever-present general manager Loyda Guzman, is friendly and responsive without being cloying. One of the real pleasures is eating at the bar and occasionally turning around to look out those enormous, gorgeous windows at the Empire State Building's lights coming on a dusk. This restaurant is a gem and a winner.
