I am so disappointed after wasting my time and money on this much hyped restaurant. I had high hopes after noting a 26 rating for food in zagat's. Those hopes were swiftly dashed by our heavily Spanish accented captain. First, we ordered an expensive Barolo from the wine list. The captain (there was no sommelier) brought a decanter but proceeded to pour the wine directly into our glasses without offering the traditional sample. When we questioned why he did not decant the wine the waiter, who spoke in a heavy Spanish accent (no, not Italian) stared blankly, then poured (he did not decant it, he dumped it) the remainder of the bottle into the decanter.
Next we were treated to a few sample appetizers. The few slices of hard salami/pepperoni were bland. The overcooked and ice cold zuccini was too heavily peppered and contained lumps of congealed olive oil. The bread was tasteless.
For appetizers my male companion ordered the Vongole Casino which was tasty and contained a bit of bacon. A pleasantly different slant on a traditional appetizer. My stracciatella was too salty and lumpy.
After being informed that the Spaghetti Carbonara was prepared with a cream sauce I ordered the Spaghetti Vongole. I often use the preparation of Carbonara as my gauge for the quality of an Italian restaurant. The dish is not made in Italy using cream, it is made with fresh eggs, bacon and cheese. When a chef uses cream in his or her Carbonara, it is usual an indication that the chef has little formal cooking training. The Vongole was inedible. It was doused in salt and pepper so much so that I had to send it back. In its stead I received the house special pasta which was a combination of white and green fettuccine in a light primavera sauce. While the sauce was tasty, the pasta itself was crunchy. My dining partner's ravioli in pesto sauce was prepared in a cream sauce with a touch of pesto. Also an example of the chef's lack of education and/or experience. Most of us foodies know that pesto is not a cream sauce. It was so heavy and rich that my partner was unable to eat any of it.
All in all it was one of the most disappointing eating experiences I've ever had in New York City. It came so highly touted I simply cannot understand what happened. Perhaps there are new staff. Perhaps there are two Il lGiglios and I went to the wrong one.
In any case, don't waste your time.

I had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. To begin, the waiter asked if we wanted bubbly or still water. We said still, assuming that it would be nyc water. They brought us a bottle of water which we drank. When they brought us a second bottle, we said that we wanted plain water. We were never given the choice of plain nyc water, so we assumed that the still water was regular water.The waiter said he would find out what we originally asked for. He never gave us an answer. They charged us $10 for that bottle. One of our group ordered dover sole and asked for a vegetable instead of the potatoes. The waiter said there was no substitutions. They recited the specials of the night without giving prices. When we received the bill, we were quite shocked to learn that the sole was $40 (without a substitution) and the langostino (baby lobster) was $55.
To sum it all up, this place was a total rip off.

I picked Il Gigio for a 50th birthday party for my wife and her family who flew in from California. This place is fantastic. Instead of the usual ""this is what is on the menu, take it or leave it"", Ivo, the leader of the pack, told us he could basically put anything together we wanted. And so he did. Utterly phenomenal. The food was outstanding, the service even better. They start serving you as soon as you sit down with wonderful cheese and breads and other goodies. Attentive but not intrusive waiters. I would highly recommend this restaurant for any occasion. Anyone who is disappointed eating here just can't be pleased.

i did not expect anything from this place, even though i was told it was incredible. from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out the door ... the staff... the food... lamb chops are heavenly, prosciutto with melon melts in your mouth, cheesecake is perfect. stop reading. start reserving. don't eat all day. come hungry. if you can limit yourself, expect to spend about $200.

This place serves really fantastic, standard Italian dishes. The antipasto that is set on the table in the minutes before even getting the menus is a very nice touch. The service is outstanding, yet in no way overbearing. The ambience isn't the greatest in the city, and it's pretty loud, but that seems almost irrelevant given the quality of everything else. We will be returning.

I have heard about this place for many years. I finally had the opportunity to eat here last night. I think I was afraid that after you here so many wonderful things about a place, you are afraid it cannot hold up to it.
We had excellent service and we were showered with very unique, fresh and delicious starters (even before our appy). Then we ate the Antipasto for two which was also excellent. I ordered the Baby Lobsters with wine and garlic.... I must say this was one of the best meals I have ever eaten! Even the desert was soo good. Leave lots of room for food when you go!
If I had to say something negative it would only be that the lighting is very dim. A great romantic find! Also, two people with appy's came to 260.00 with tip.
I would go back in a minute!

My boyfriend and I went here for Valentines day last weekend - and it was perfect! In addition to fantastic food and about 4 complimentary appetizers, the waitstaff was wonderful. They brought every woman a rose, and set us chocolate hearts with the check. I loved the atmosphere, and the fact that the staff went that extra step to make valentines day special. This is a great place and we can't wait to go back. The only thing is to be wary of the prices of the specials, which were considerably more expensive than the menu prices. Regardless, it was a fantastic dinner and evening....

The food is always excellent, especially the pasta starters cooked table-side. The rack of lamb is superior to all of the main courses. Why do some waiters believe they have something to feel superior about? God only knows... Great place for a business dinner.
