Extremely rude and obnoxious service

My friends and I had decided to go to the Hudson Bar and Books last night (Saturday, May 2, 2009) for some good drinks and great company. Well, the drinks were fine and the company was great but the service was horrible. In particular, the rude head waitress who told my friends and I that we weren't permitted to stand near the bar and when we attempted to sit down in an area that was cleary available for patrons, she said that we weren't permitted to sit there. We were told by her that we were only permitted to go to the back area where our other friends were seated, however, a few moments earlier we were told that we weren't permitted to go back there unless there were actual seats for us??? Clearly, this obnoxious and rude waitress did not care for our patronage. The bar wasn't even crowded and I would have thought that the bar would have been pleased to have paying customers.

I could understand this rude, obnoxious behavior if my friends and I were belligerent drunks or the like, but we weren't. We were polite ladies who were simply looking to catch up and enjoy ourselves. When this despicable waitress suggested that we should have had reservations if we wanted to sit and have a drink, I was stunned. When did they start taking reservations at bars? So, if you plan on going to this bar, please be sure to call in advance and reserve bar stools for you and your friends. What a joke!

Excellent cocktails, decent cigar list, good service, expensive.

I put off trying this place because of the negative reviews about the service (note those reviews are all pretty old, from '02). Finally went last night and found out what I was missing. It is very expensive, but the cocktails are excellent, the cigar list is decent (although they were out of both the Padron 3k and 6k), and the service was good. It was impossible to find a seat at the bar on a Monday right after work, but later in the evening the crowd thinned out a bit. Mostly cigar smokers but saw some cigarettes as well. I'll be going back.

The warm, masculine environment and top-notch cocktails make this my go-to bar. Benjamin is among the best in the city, and his meticulous mixing is reason enough to stop here. Not to mention that one can actually somke inside.

Great atmosphere, service, environment...

I completely agree with this person and always refer my friends to this place...""The place is beautiful and laid-back, the service prompt and accurate, good tunes rocking through the place, and other bar patrons didn't seem at all pretentious or self-important. I specifically made a mental note that I'd be coming back, ...I think this place rocks and should definitely be tried at least once before anyone gives any credence to these bad reviews.""

Avoid the asian hostess/waitress

The place is smaller than I expected it to be. Good if you want it to be intimate, bad if you have a few bags with you and care about space restrictions.
If you go, find seats either at the bar or in the back couch area.
My girlfriend and I went last weekend. I'm a scotch and cigar man and my girlfriend is getting the taste for them as well.
Once inside a runner in the bar sat us at a small table parallel to the bar.
We were then greated by an abrupt waitress that addresses us as ladies and didn't really have a polite come back to her error. She avoided making eye contact with us most the time she was near us.
When asked for a recomendation she wasn't of much help.
When I asked her for a glass of water for my lady served neat she came back with a small cordial glass of water. I understand formalities but that would have to be taken as a joke at best.
I asked for a real glass of water with no ice again when she returned. When she came back she slammed the glass on the table almost tipping the ash tray over next to it.
The glass of water was laiden with mystery bubbles but it wasn't mineral water. We asked for a clean glass from the buser and received one from them without a problem.

Here's another example of bad service though. We didn't want two candles at the table to have a darker ambience. My girlfriend blew one out. The bus boy went to light it and then an argument proceeded that he had to relight it. Is this not ridiculous? If the customer wants the candle off you don't talk back to them and try to fish a reason out. The customer is always right but apparently not at this establishment.

The hostess/waitress that we had never checked up on us. Yet always passed our table. I regard that as a lack of service on her part.

I do plan to return, sit at the bar, and give this place another chance but I do not expect to be served by that woman again.

Meticulousy hand crafted cocktails. Fine Cigars. One of the only places in New York to legally light up a cigar and enjoy a fine cognac, whisky, port. Remember - they have an uptown location (a bit more formal) - also a Cigar Bar - Lexington Bar And Books. Elegant atmosphere, great service. Just opened a location in Prague, Czech Rep. and are doing one in Bucharest.

Don't Buy These Lies

Wow, I'm not sure why so many people are spitting vitriol about this place. Granted, I've only been there once and it was right after work. The place is beautiful and laid back, the service prompt and accurate, good tunes rocking through the place, and other bar patrons didn't seem at all pretentious or self-important. I specifically made a mental note that I'd be coming back, and that's just what I'm planning tonight. Finding bars off the beaten path with a little character are what makes life fun in Manhattan. I think this place rocks and should definitely be tried at least once before anyone gives any credence to these bad reviews. Who knows? Maybe they're just jealous bar owners nearby trying to compete with this fine establishment...

Try it for a change of pace.

It's not as snooty as people make it out to be. Go on a weekday for a quiet beer, the bartender is really nice and there is a mellow feeling, no hype, no pressure.
I believe that some people immediately go to some palces with attitude prepared and then they have no fun!

I went to the Hudson bar with my boyfriend and the guy at the front door was extremely rude. I was told there some real snobs in there, but he was the only one I encountered. It's too bad ""the help"" has such a bad attitude. I will definitely not return just on account of his behavior.

GREAT for masochists

So they can mix a drink, big deal. I'd rather have a bunch of monkeys slinging bottles behind the bar than these creeps. The maitre d' really puckers up for the aging eurotrash then explodes violently on the staff. Oh, and how much ABBA and smooth jazz can you stand in an evening? Find out here. There are bars in the area with better atmosphere and less irritating music.

strives for classiness

I have always wondered what the attraction to this bar is - the few times I have been there, I have been struck by it's overpriced drinks, it's utter pretentiousness, seen the manager (?) be incredibly rude to customers and staff, and wondered about their music selection -- a monotonous and pretty excrutiating collection of smoothe jazz and the like. ..In general, it's completely phoney and contrived ""classiness"" is a real turn-off, this place lacks the charm it strives for.

Provided by Citysearch -

In one word: pretentious. I think they are going for classy, but the atmosphere is fake and silly. Even worse, the service there is horrible. They overcharged me for a couple of glasses of wine (which are already expensive enough) and refused to take the charge off my bill. I would not recommend this bar to anyone.

Chic and Relax

What a great combination! The drinks are prepared with such meticulousness, I finally found a place that makes great negroni. The ambiance is very classy and somehow relaxing. As for the menu, you'll find the perfect bar menu for `fins palais` Grab a book and watch a James Bond while sipping one of the best Martini in New York City...

Cosy, Classy, Whiskey

When I discovered Hudson Bar and Books, it was the Whiskey's night. I decided to try it out and was very impressed by the experience. I also had a cigar and some finger food wich were delicious.
The perfect place to disconnect from the city-stress.
I felt welcomed right away-

Better than yoga

Looking for a place to relax? Stop looking, just get over Hudson Bar & Books for a succulent drink prepared and served by friendly staff in a refined and tasteful environment. It's inviting and very relaxing if you want to chat with some friends or just read by yourself. They even have a great selection of cigars and a little lounge in the back.
I heard they just open on Lex & 73rd. Looking forward to it!

Needs improvement

The drinks are good here - BUT, the service stinks. I waited 10 minutes to get change for a drink I ordered at the bar, my friend had one of her drinks dumped all over the floor by the same waitress above who took too long to get me my change, and it took forever for that much to happen. The staff seemed really confused - sweet, but dumb. Only improvement from other recent reviews I've read is that the infamous tv was not on. Decor isn't bad - but wow, the service sucks. Also, I don't understand why this is catagorized as a restaurant cause all I saw was a bar and drinking.

What happened?

Not sure why they killed what used to be a lovely atmosphere. They installed a big glaring TV and what look like heat lamps over the bar. The vibe just isn't what it was, and the staff cleared on out of there citing difficulties with the management.

Offensive & Obnoxious

Terrible service. If you are looking for a courteous, friendly manager on staff to offer solicitious service, go somewhere else. Otherwise, if you want insults, threats and rudeness, this is your place. Ask for Flavin - he will be happy to ignore you at no additional charge.
