I stopped by FatBaby for the first time last Wednesday to check out the scene. I was told that a great band plays every Wednesday night, and as a music blogger, I just needed to check things out. I was extremely impressed. FatBaby has a great vibe, seemingly bringing the NYC lounge and indie music scene to one place. The lights were dim, booths were full, and the music was original, the only kind of music I wanna hear these days. I will be back here again.

I went there on saturday and both me and my friends purses were stolen. Someone found my friends stuff around the area and returned it..my stuff is still gone. I looked around the area to see if they dumped my stuff by hers, and instead, I found someone else's purse! (I returned it to the precinct because it had no ID in it) Clearly, this happens a lot at this place. My friends wallet was stolen from there the night before. The management doesn't care so if you go there, don't put your stuff down!

Tuesday night we went there lil earlier than my friends band was suppose to play, first of all, place stank, we said its alright we will give it a try. Then we decided to drink, went to the bar, bartender looked not happy, asked for margarita, don't know what she put in it, tasted really foul, asked bartender if she made margarita, she said yes,my wife said its really weak, she took our glass and added orange juice in it.......that was it for FAT BABY.....sorry if bartender puts oj in margarita .......never going back, we just left...........enter at your own risk

Came here for a party with a big group of friends. They were totally unprepared to handle a group of our size, despite the fact that we had arranged the party weeks in advance. Bartender was intentionally as slow as possible and it took forever to get a drink, and the drinks he poured were super weak. All of this should probably be expected from a night out on the LES, but to make matters worse, several people in our party had things stolen (purse with cell phone, wallet, etc., coats, etc.). The bouncers were completely unhelpful and didn't seem to care much. Since then, I have heard that these kinds of thefts are not uncommon and occur pretty regularly at Fat Baby, so I would not be surprised if it's something the management/bouncers know about and turn a blind eye to. Other than us, the crowd was pretty cheesy - B&T/outer-borough/corporate wankers in button-downs with too much hair gel and cologne. AVOID Fat Baby at all cost.

This place is way to crowded if you want to dance, the bartenders take at least 10 min to get you adrink, even when I was paying it took 20 min to get my bill adn change, but the worst thing is that someone is stealing stuff in that bar, a bunch of people had a party down there and lost a bunch of purses and phones, some of the stuff turned up in the trash can with no money or valuables in it, this is not the first time this has happened and some other people have told me of similar experiences.
The place could be amazing, but it's not.

I booked my sister's birthday party here after I heard from a friend that she'd been to some fun parties there and the people didn't even need to get a bottle. However, when I e-mailed someone about a reservation, a bottle was required for the table... it wasn't too expensive for NYC standards ($225, including gratuity), so we went ahead with it figuring that they would treat us and all of our friends well if we shelled out some money. Needless to say, that wasn't the case.
First, they gave my boyfriend a hard time about going in, b/c ""he wasn't wearing a collared shirt,"" after the bouncer had just let a line of people in front of him in who were in north faces and t-shirts under them.
Then, this security guard on a power trip hassled us the whole time we were there!! He screamed in my face b/c I said I didn't want to check my coat, and threatened to kick my friend out when he told the bouncer not to speak to a girl like that. I was APALLED!!
The final straw was when this bouncer hassled my friend, who is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, because he was having trouble staying up. I get that he had to leave, but the bouncer treated him awfully, pushing him out the door, even after we told him what was wrong! Then when I finally insisted on speaking to a manager about all that was going on, the manager simply said he believes his staff over me, and I should basically leave if I had a problem with it.
So if you don't feel like reading my entire story up there, just read this : DO NOT GO TO FAT BABY, especially for an event that you want to be special, like a birthday. Plus - WAY too crowded.

I had a birthday party here this past weekend- reserved some tables upstairs on the mezzanine by the DJ. There was a one bottle/table minimum, bottles about $200/each.... not a bad price for the neighborhood.
It was great being upstairs because the downstairs gets so crowded it can start to look like a frat party. The music was awesome and the ambiance is a blast. The place overall is a nice mix of not too old, not too young, not B&T, sort of hip but not weird.
Our guests were able to skip the line (well, most of the them- the bouncer was a little pissy/confused by the end of the night and made some guests stand outside for a while). Skipping the line is important- If you have to wait in line, it can take up to a half hour to get in after midnight.
Biggest negative was the waitress. The service wasn't very good- we had to hunt down the waitress to get our mixers and ran out of ice multiple times. She pretty much tossed down the bottles, took our money, and never came back. Given we paid a 25% service charge, I don't think it was crazy to expect to be checked in on at least once or twice.
Overall, it was a great time though and I'd go back- I'd just make sure to get some better service or refuse to pay such a high tip/ service.

I just had my girlfriend's 25th birthday party at Fat Bay and it was freaking fantastic. We were going to have it someplace else but decided to cancel there after my girlfriend visited this place and couldn't stop raving about it. Yes, there was a line to get in, which I'm told is fairly standard for weekend nights. But we had a reservation - got three tables on the floating mezzanine, which overlooks the entire first floor of the bar, right next to the dj booth, so we were able to make ""requests"" all night. Plus there was cocktail waitress and - for the LES - pretty good service the whole night. We didn't have to pay anything for the reservation, no table minimum, (though we did end up buying three bottle of Goose, anyway.)
Pros: awesome music, great service, cheap prices.
Cons: crowded, line to get in.

I do not recommend this venue. Though the short lines outside make the bar appealing from the outside, once you enter this dank cavern, you realize why... The space is not only unaccommodating, but it's trivial and boring. However, I was meeting friends there, so we decided to grab a drink before we left. The bartenders refused to serve new patrons and told us they would only serve ""friends first"". And everyone else waited helplessly at the bar to get drinks. I didn't realize bars made money by putting business on hold and handpicking who they wanted money from.
There are tons of bars on that street. Trust me. Find another one...

do NOT go here! below average music selection, one of the worst & quietest sound systems i've ever heard around the dance floor, overcrowded... plus the coat check is strategically placed at the far end of the dance floor, so the entire night people are pushing and shoving you to check/pick up their coats as you try to dance to the music you can barely hear. it's among the worst of the LES.

Booked on a Friday night for our 3rd show here. First two were decent weeknight experiences, so we thought we'd see what a Friday night show was like. We get a call midday saying that several bands had cancelled and asking if we are still playing. We tell them yes. They tell us we can basically go on whenever we like and play for however long we like. So we tell them we'll play at 9:30 as agreed. We get there around 8:45 and find out that the club is overbooked for the night (what?) and we will need to play a short set (30 mins). The downstairs bar smells like either garbage or dead human beings, hard to tell which. Apparently, the club was booked for too many bands and a private party. The club owner cuts the set short (to 4 songs!) to make room for the private party (poor partygoers had to put up with the smell of trash) then when asked about it, he says he doesn't care whatsoever because the bar isn't a live music venue.
If you are a band, stay FAR AWAY from Fat Baby. If you are a bargoer, find a different bar. The bar was empty on a Friday night, probably owing to the horrendous smell.

I have had 2 parties at fat baby (for friends) and i have had great experiences both times. it gets crowded later in the night, so tell your friends to come early (before 12). you can get a table without getting a bottle which is sick.... staff is nice and accommodating, music is awesome (good mix of different things, something for everyone), downstairs is fun for dancing, good looking crowd, drinks arent crazy expensive. really an awesome place, one of my favorites in the city.

Pathetic how fat babys owners (evanford) also rate their own clubs! guess they have no creativity and are desparate for good reviews. Seriously, look how Evanford goes around rating this bar (I bet they rated ther other bar Spitzers too), nice one. Well looks like I took the name masondixon so they cant hide behind that one. I wonder what evanford will say about his 3rd bar (mason dixon), I bet he will give it great reviews b/c he is sooo pathetic .what a joke!!! somebody needs to call him out on this
Fat Baby is THE PLACE to have a party. Not to mention that it is one of the few remining small music venues on the LES where you can catch local bands before they sell out. I threw a friend's b-day (surprise!!!) there last week. Staff was really cool, and we had a great time. Love the victorian pinup wallpaper. And the cute bartenders!

Unless you really enjoy hanging out with, or are part of the bridge & tunnel crowd, STAY AWAY! The place is overcrowded, they overcharge, and management is terrible. the line is definitely NOT worth the wait. i reserved a spot for a party and promised a minimum spend; i agreed to all their terms and even put a down payment as requested. not only did they not regulate the reserved spot (they allowed anyone and everyone in the area), but they didn't even return my full downpayment after my party exceeded the minimum spend by 3 times. they ignore both my calls and emails requesting that the error be corrected. this is the place for you if you like getting ripped off from a packed nasty bar. for better music, drinks, scene, look across the street or walk a block in any direction and you'll find a better deal.

i went to fat baby last night. the line was around the block but i waited as it seemed to be moving quickly. i went inside to find a bar packed with button down pink shirts, crew cuts, and beer swinging investment bankers. this is not a hipster bar, in fact, this isn't even a cool bar. it suffers from what any club in new york city suffers from - the moment lame new york city transplants who live 4 to an apartment in whack murray hill find out about it...its gone to hell.
