We all want our kids to be happy and healthy. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends kids have cholesterol levels screened between the ages of 9 and 11, then again at 17 and 21. Now that we know that these diseases can be somewhat diverted starting in childhood, it is crucial to set kids on the proper path of living a life without high cholesterol. Most adults are concerned with cholesterol levels so when your children are young now is the time to set an example as parents by teaching them good habits early on. Most parents do not think about these issues as they have always been adult health concerns.

The Practice of William and Irwin Rappaport is unique in that it provides over 50 years of experience in specialty care for patients of all ages with asthma and allergies as well as primary care pediatrics for newborns, infants, school age children and young adults.
Sleep Disorders
Primary enuresis occurs when young children lack bladder control from infancy. Most of these children have urine control problems only during sleep. It is unconscious and non-intentional. These children do not wake up in time to relieve themselves. In other cases, the child's enuresis may be related to a sleep disorder.

Traveling to places in Asia and Africa where the vaccination rates are low and the disease outbreak is high, measles can be unknowingly picked up, brought to this country, and spread to unvaccinated friends and family. According to the CDC, for every 10 unvaccinated people, nine will get measles. It is contracted through the air and by person to person contact. It can cause major complications such as blindness and become deadly when the brain becomes inflamed.

As parents, it is our obligation to know the signs and triggers that lead to destructive behaviors well before they lead to a point of no return. Today more than ever, treatment is available in abundance, perhaps too much, but the stigma of mental health disorders are fading and its treatment options are wide open to discussion. Help is out there and once again as parents, teachers, neighbors, doctors, and friends we must instill in the next generation the thought process that it is ok to reach for help. To ask for it before they decide there is nothing that can cease or help the unbearable overwhelming feelings that can lead to taking one’s life.
Psychiatry
Depression and anxiety are treatable disorders. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, “suicide is the second leading cause of death for children, adolescents, and young adults age 5-to-24-year-olds.The majority of children and adolescents who attempt suicide have a significant mental health disorder, usually depression”. Younger children who speak about wanting to hurt themselves may be confused about strong feelings they are experiencing. They may not be able to distinguish between being sad, mad, angry or may even have ADHD. These kids will attempt suicide out of impulse. Teens on the other hand, attempt suicide, as their feeling it is the only way out. They may feel pressures to succeed in school, sports, society or have financial insecurities, homelessness, hunger. They may be trying drugs or drinking alcohol. All of the above, combined with an undiagnosed mental disorder is a recipe for a life altering decision. Literally.

Psychological issues also contribute to overweight children. Some people, including children, overeat to combat stress, depression, boredom and uncomfortable feelings. Children learn these behaviors from their families. Physical activity and aerobic sports are the best way to deal with anxiety and stress. Remember obesity eventually leads to a number of medical issues for children beyond their third decade which include hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, a 40% increase in solid cancers, hip and knee replacement surgery and depression. This is on top of the social isolation and depression overweight and obese children suffer as they enter adolescence.
