I walked in here on a Saturday night (May 19th, 2012 around 1:00am) and obviously it was very crowded.
The bartenders (Male and Female) were counting money and a lot of it. If you know how to maintain a cash register these too fools wouldnt have to both do it at the same time but after they counted money for about 10 minutes. 4 people that walked in behind me waiting for the bartenders to finish, had walked out. I waited.
After they were done he started to collect cups instead of serve customers that needed a drink. He came towards me and I smiled and he proceeded to not ask me what I want but to collect cups. I said ""May I have a drink please?"" He then decided to tell me ""WELL CANT YOU SEE I AM BUSY?"" EXCUSE ME? I said ""I have been waiting here for a long time"". I said ""no problem. I will go else where."" He said ""Then get out. BYE""
What kind of customer service is that?
A simple ""Hang on one sec, I will be right with you, would have been perfect!""
In this economy where people are looking and needing jobs, unprofessionals like the male bartender I encountered remain with jobs. If its that busy you need a bar back honey! OR what I would have done was went from one end of the bar to the other and made everyone drinks, THEN collected any dirty cups. I also wouldnt be counting money then making drinks. Money is dirty. You are touching fruit all night. This bar needs two GOOD bartenders, a manager to count the money and keep an eye out for the place, and a bar back to collect and wash all cups/ dishes.
I am a bar hopper! I have been since the age of 22. This by far is the worst bartender I have ever encountered in my life. I use to travel a lot and been to many different states and most bartenders are nice and sweet. He was a C****!
If you need a bartender CUBBYHOLE, contact me and I will come work.
PS> The bar one block up and make a turn to the right next to the corner store, ANOTHER disaster. Can you believe that the woman bartender charged me 12 bucks and I gave her 15 and she did not give me my change. I asked her if I had paid her to remind her and she said YES THANK YOU! I have to drive by there to get the address of that place and write a review about them too.... SMH!!!!!

This place is great if your looking to soak up local flavor. We were out or towners looking for a good girl bar to grab a drink or two or 10 so we stop by Monster (very friendly door man) in Greenich Village and he pointed us in the direction of two bars 1. Heneriettas Hudson and 2. Cubby Hole. After walking about 8 block we found Henriettas and yep you guessed it, it was kareoke night. Lame I know. We left there after we couldnt find a seat or get a drink and headed to Cubby Hole. After a ten minute walk we found it easily. The place doesnt seem like much at first. After we approached the bar and met the very friendly bartender who scoffed at our age we had a seat at an empty table in front of the bar and truly enjoyed the rest of the night. The name of the joint emplies its space...cubby---hole. Literaly the place is as big as a hotel room, but I the atmosphere is great. Friendly locals jamming to the hottest beats via a prepaid jukebox (no dj). The lack of dj was fine with us because it equated to a no cover charge for my long time babe and me. In a city where tipping is obiligitory and the cost of everthing is sky high the free entry was a big bonus. The Cubby Hole was the exclamation point on our trip to NYC. We hop on the the #1 subway, got of at Greenich Village walked a few block and met a really cool guy, hung out at a great bar, and had an awesome time. Don't miss the Cubby Hole. A New York City treasure.

Cubby is a great bar with a relaxed and very friendly atmosphere - easy to go to by yourself and meet some new friends. Only consistent drawback is depressed bartender Lisa who can be quite rude - as a former bartender clear burnout is in effect - c'ome on cubby and hire someone with a personalty, looks and some cool drink skills - you'll be packed even more!! All in all of course a cool, relaxed place to feel very comfortable among other friendly patrons and some cool decor!

I was shocked when i read the last review of what is now one of my favourite bars in NYC and i could not disagree more. There is a reason why the bar is packed on a tue night, (1) because the margaritas are good. (2) they're $2.00! - where does that happen! (3) the bartenders are extremely friendly and wouldn't know how to give someone attitute.... So clearly that person had a bad day and judged everyone they came in contact with!
MOVING ON, i went last monday for the first time for my birthday and the blonde bartender payed a lot of attention to us, gave us delicious shots and made sure we were comfortable had a great time. She even stayed after her shift gave us pizza and danced with us! LONG LIVE THE CUBBYHOLE!

the $2 dollar margaritas were awful! the place stinks. the crowd was of obnoxious people, losers. the blonde bartender had some attitude, who needs an old chick to tend bar anyway? the place is simply dirty. ugly people, ugly bartender, ugly bar. the cubbyhole in one word? loserville.

i have never met or felt uncomfortable in the CubbyHole - everyone is extremely relaxed and friendly.... Try it again on a tue or thur, Sundays are great also....Christopher and Ellen are just some of the really friendly bartenders there, not forgetting cutie pies Lisa and Carla. It deserves to be given another chance....
Garanteed a good time!

Biased as I may be, the Cubbyhole is the best bar in NYC. Absolutely.
The Cubbyhole is familial and friendly. A true neighborhood bar. Teeming with gay men and women, straight people, couples and singles. Every walk of life can find comfort and fun at the Cubby. The dedicated staff is always around to help out even when ""off duty."" The bartenders are all great, from fun loving to intellectual, from crazy queen to pretty lady. Lots of regulars and lots of newbies. This is a great bar, you will never see a more eclectic group of misfits mixed with such a fun decor. Amazing specials during the week, frozen drinks, margaritas and an astoundingly massive music selection.

Never in my life have I encountered such a RUDE, OBNOXIOUS place filled with rude, obnoxious bigots. Last night, my cousin and I ducked into this joint for a drink. As soon as we walked in, some biznatch with a mohawk started screaming, ""I BET YOU'RE STRAIGHT!! YOU DON'T BELONG HERE!"" Soon, we were being harrassed by 40 angry women. Obviously, we left, only to hear ""good riddance, straight girls"" as we walked down the street

MONDAYS MONDAYS MONDAYS :) i go there after work with my fabulous gay guy friend to get my weekly dose of Ellen haha and Venny :) the bartenders are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! great place awesome electronic jukebox. Great friendly crowd and if your lucky ull prolly see this funny palm reader who walks in and goes straight to the restroom and stops to offer palm readings on his way out (i wish he washes his hands)

Ursiemonster, sounds like you're blinded by your own bitterness. If no one talks to you at this bar (probably the friendliest bar in nyc) then there probably is good reason. Consider staying on the westcoast, it's obvious you don't want to be in nyc.....

$2 Margaritas! Need I say more? So much fun! Great bar, great atmosphere. After work I go to the cubbyhole. I am usually there on Tuesdays for the margaritas, the bartender is uber cool, he poors them strong and has a cool dog. The other bartender is fierce too. Go to the cubbyhole you'll love it. some of the reviews are bad on this site. I do not see what those people are talking about. I always enjoy myself.

I was excited to see this place based on the reviews, but was pretty disappointed. My girlfriend and I trod over to the village on a snowy night (the neighborhood was really pretty, I'll give it that), and thought that we would find a warm atmosphere where we could chat with some regulars. The guy behind the bar *studiously* ignored me standing there waiting to order for upwards of 10 minutes (twice!!!) while chatting with his girlfriend, and then made a shiyty, overpriced drink from the specials menu that he didn't even know existed (or what was in it). Overall, I found it pretencious and tacky, more urban German breeder bar than the laid-back west coast mixed atmosphere I love. After spending an hour (and upwards of $50), not a single person smiled or was polite. Apparantly you need a big ""SPECIAL"" sign over your head to wander in and have a nice evening.

I've been going to the Cubby for over 10 years! It's the most unique place on earth!
It's mixed girl and boy friendly. The staff is always friendly and the service is always with a smile!
The juke box is off the hook. The drink specials are awesome! Weekends are packed so get there early and check out the eye candy behind the bar! Jackie & Carla!

My girlfriend and I love this bar. We always have fun. I really like Lisa, Mike and Christoph. We come for the $2 margaritas on Tuesdays and Mike is so cute, he seems to be really proud of his ""special"" drinks. Lisa always has hot girls around her, she can make any night hot. But Chirstoph is the best, he ALWAYS WANTS TO PARTY. Thursdays are great but, they always yell last call around 2 so he can go party somewhere else! LOL! He's is so funny, we always have fun!!!

I went to check this place out one weekday evenning in June all by myself. Being a pretty friendly and outgoing person trying to meet new people, I sat next to a couple of ladies and we chatted at the bar. Everything was fine until after a couple of drinks, the bartender walked over and told me I was talking too loud. I was the only black woman at the bar, and I was alone, as the women next to me could not figure out why this was said with everyone yelling and the music blasting, I complied as best I could. I continued to talk with the women until the bartender then told me that she should throw me out because people left because of me. I knew this was not true because I did nothing wrong and if it had been true she would have told me immediately to leave. she also said it very casually like it was personal. I wanted to leave at this point, and did after I had a very angry remark for her for the way I was treated. when I called the next day to speak to the manager, she would not come to the phone. The women I sat with at the bar advised me that I should never go back there, and I haven't been back since. No one should be treated that way.

This place was a laugh. The bar was more than packed. There was one single bartender behind the bar that could not keep up to the high demand of the customers. She was a lady that could not make a smile on Saturday night with long dark hair. We were told she owned the bar so we could only assume she was to cheap to hire the proper staff. I had two gay friends with me that were guys and they were treated even more rude. Very unfortunate unfriendly place to visit for a gay girl or guy. Dirty, smelly and filthy restrooms. Avoid this at all cost.
Happy Gay Pride to the other great bars in the area!
