Sunday brunch- Avoid with a passion!

I am usually really thick skinned when it comes to various characters you tend to encounter in our very diverse city but my experience today at this establishment has compelled me to write this excerpt out in absolute disgust!

I walk into an absolutely empty bar and ask an elderly Irish bar tender if he does not mind if he could turn up the volume of the TV so I could hear the commentary of a football game. He promptly issues out a statement that he is not allowed to serve any alcohol till noon. I was least interested in drinking this morning but found this extremely odd (been to enough bars on Sunday pre-noon and gotten that hangover remedy cocktail), so I asked is it because the bar has some licensing issues? And he rudely responds its how it and its 10k city fine- take it or leave it???

At this point I am rubbed the wrong way but I tried to brush it as side by asking for the menu and I figure out what I want but I am not just hungry yet to order.
The man now is standing right in front me and then asks me what I would like? I respond saying- I am not hungry right this minute but closer to half time I will get something and water is good for now.

He then responds- ""no you have to get something to be in here and went on some tyrant about tourist coming in not ordering and watching tv."" I then proceed to be polite and understanding and say. ""You can take my card, charge me for brunch and if you can please bring the meal out in 30 mins."" And this I believed was a fair compromise.

He then proceeds to hammer away at me saying if I am not ordering right now to eat- I SHOULD LEAVE???? Unreal! Never in my whole life have I come across person of such crude and uncouth behavior. And can I make another statement- this place was EMPTY! Looked like it had a capacity for 60 people and was absolutely EMPTY!

I promptly left the premises and as I was walking out a young waitress, who look perplexed and smiled when I said ? what did the old man smoke today morning? So this might be a strong indication this behavior is perceived to be normal??

I walked to a bistro, closer to Madison and was promptly seated- which again was another empty establishment that actually served ALCOHOL (magically having no legal issues); changed my mind and got a pint of Guinness and ordered food as I wanted 30 mins later. The staff was extremely courteous and put my faith back in New York City!
.
Sorry for the verbose rant- I have no idea if this old guy works on weekends or is there often. Please avoid him with a passion! And if the owner of CONNOLLY?S happens to read this, please do check on the customer service of your staff! He more fit to work as character in a Haunted House than being a bartender.

fyi- this gets a star because there is no option to put a big FAT 0

Terrible Service

As a frequent MoMA visitor, I used to enjoy stopping by Connolly's across the street afterwards for a few beers and some appetizer's, where the cheery Irish service is usually very warm and friendly. On a recent visit, however, myself and some friends were greated by a rather cold bartender who appeared put off by us from the very first. When it came time to order, I asked for a recommendation of ""a light Irish beer on draft"" and he said I should look at the menu. I did so, and didn't know from the long list which might be closest to my wish... I asked him again and he said they didn't have any light Irish beers, so I just ordered something else. My friend ordered a Harp, and when I saw that it was ""light"" I asked the bartender for a Harp. He then said, ""OK but you'll have to pay for the other one."" Yes, I realize that. Duh. So rude, but also it was his fault for not even mentioning the Harp when I had asked, which PS, another waiter at the same place had recommended to me in the past in response to the same question. Ok, so yes a Harp is a lager, not a ""light beer"" but he could have mentioned it. Then he tries to be all fake jolly treating us like tourists: ""SO, WHERE YOU GUYS FROM?"" Please. Never treat a New Yorker like a Tourist. It's insulting. He continued on with a bad attitude towards us for the rest of the evening. I was so turned off by him that honestly I don't ever want to go back there again! Great for Tourists, Two thumbs down for locals!

Good irish Pub

This palce was just a block from a trade show I went to at the Hilton. The bartender and staff were friendly, it was reasonable priced, and the food was very good. I would recommend stopping by. In fact, I stopped by for at least a short time to have a beer every day I was there.

Superb Dining

The food, atomospher, and service were excellent. They provide a basket of assorted breads with your meal, but the bread could have been the meal, it was so delicious. They have a wide variety of food's to choose from and the prices are reasonable, for New York.
