Bunions
Reasons that a person may develop a bunion can vary. Some patients may form bunions due to genetic factors, complications with arthritis, or a weak foot structure. General aging can also play a role in the formation of a bunion.
Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails can form when the side of a toenail begins to grow into the flesh surrounding the nail. As a result, the affected toe—most commonly the big toe—may become red, swollen, painful, and—in severe cases—infected.

To tell if you have plantar warts, you should check the soles of your feet for bumpy growths. Sometimes these growths may come with a tiny black dot in the center. You may also have plantar warts if you experience pain when walking or standing up. Because plantar warts are easily confused with other foot conditions like corns or calluses, it’s important you seek professional help for proper treatment.

Calluses
Hammertoe is a common foot condition that can happen from an imbalance of muscles surrounding the toe joints. Hammertoe can be categorized as classic hammertoe, mallet toe, and claw toe. In classic hammertoe, the affected toe will bend down at the joint and resemble a hammer. As toes are important to the balance of the foot and control pressure distribution, hammertoe can cause problems with walking. The affected toe can appear deformed, calluses can form on them, and it may be painful to wear shoes. Relief options for hammertoe pain can include choosing shoes with wide toe boxes, using toe pads, and wearing orthotics. If these conservative options are not successful and pain persists or worsens, surgery may be an option to straighten the toe. If you suffer from a painful hammertoe, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for an evaluation and to receive treatment that is personalized to your specific situation.
Fungus
The area of the toes is generally warm and damp, unfortunately making it a great area for fungus to grow. If left untreated, the fungal infection can spread, which is why it’s so important to get professional help early on and look into your treatment options.
Lesions
If you suspect you have plantar warts, you may have the following symptoms: pain or tenderness while walking, a lesion that interrupts the ridges in the skin of your foot, small fleshy lesions on the bottom of the foot, or a callus where a wart has grown inward over a well-defined spot on the skin.

Achilles Tendonitis
There are many different causes of heel pain, including strains or sprains, tarsal tunnel syndrome, stress fractures, achilles tendonitis, and heel bursitis. One of the most common causes of heel pain for children and teenagers specifically is Sever’s disease. Sever’s disease can develop due to overuse or repetitive microtrauma of the heel bone's growth plates. This condition is often seen among those who are active in sporting activities.
Ankle Sprain
Taking the stairs can be a hazard, especially for people who have greater mobility issues, such as seniors and young children. Common foot and ankle injuries from falling down a set of stairs include broken bones, cuts, and lacerations. Stair falls can happen from losing one’s footing or not paying attention. They can also occur if there is a maintenance issue with the stairs. Stair injuries can be prevented by installing banisters to hold onto, fixing loose or broken handrails or stairs, fixing carpeting that is not properly secured, and removing objects or wet conditions that may interfere with safely descending the steps. If you have fallen down a staircase and sustained an injury to your feet or ankles, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist as soon as possible to assess the severity of your injuries and obtain treatment.

Fungus Toenails
Fungal infections occur due to fungus getting through the cracks of the toes or cuts in your skin. Common signs that you may have a fungal infection include thicker than normal toenails, oddly shaped toenails, discoloration, a yellowish hue to the nail, and separation of the nail and nail bed. Fungal infections can affect anyone but are most common among men, those with diabetes or athlete’s foot, and smokers. The risk of having toenail fungus also increases as you age, if another family member has it, and if you have a weaker immune system.
Hammertoes
A feeling of numbness in the toes may be nothing more than the result of wearing shoes that do not fit properly. For instance, high heeled shoes with a narrow and pointy toe box can be the direct cause of this phenomenon. In those cases, removing the shoes may fix the problem. However, if numbness in the toes is frequent, or even chronic, an underlying cause may be indicated. One major cause of numbness in the feet and toes can be from diabetes. Damage to the peripheral nerves from high levels of blood sugar can block feeling in the toes. A condition called Morton’s neuroma, which is a thickening of the nerve tissues near the ball of the foot can also cause numbness that affects the toes. Among the other medical conditions that can result in numbness of the toes are gout, arthritis, and hammertoe. If numb toes becomes a frequent problem, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a full exam and diagnosis.
Heel Spurs
A heel spur is a bony protrusion that occurs on the heel. It is often confused with plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament. When a heel spur is painful it can make it quite difficult to walk.

Heel pain, while quite common, can be extremely uncomfortable and painful if not met with proper care or treatment. Heel pain may occur if you injure or overuse the heel. If left uncared for, the affected area may worsen, limiting your mobility and making it difficult to perform everyday activities, such as walking.

Ingrown Toenails
Treatment for an ingrown toenail will vary on a case by case basis. One form of treatment requires lifting the ingrown nail and placing a splint or piece of cotton underneath. Another method for a more severe case would involve partially removing the nail. For cases that need extreme care, the nail itself and tissue would have to be removed.
Plantar Fasciitis
The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toes. This is usually caused by repetitive overuse from running or other sports activities, or from wearing shoes that do not fit properly. Other potential causes for heel pain include Achilles tendonitis, bursitis, fat pad atrophy, Sever’s disease, Haglund’s deformity, and arthritis.
Podiatric Surgery
In most cases, Dr. Menna and Dr. Pace perform cosmetic foot surgery on an outpatient basis, which means you can go home afterward. If your procedure isn’t too extensive, you will be given a local anesthetic. If your procedure is more involved, you will be given a general anesthetic.
