Theaters

The place is like a grand ballroom with lots of space and choices, the staff are extremely courteous . And it's in the heart of times square!

Machines to buy the tickets - no

Machines to buy the tickets - no humans. You can be standing in line for a while, get to a machine that takes your ticket order, and then it tells you it cant print! You have to get back on another line hoping that machine prints your ticket! the automated process really sucks.

There are actual humans behind the food counters, but they move with the speed of an unmotivated $8 an hour employee. The food lines are always ~10 minutes of waiting.

Finally, the bathrooms are very very small and if you go right after a show ends you will wait on a sizable line.

In summary, the movie better provide for a great experience because the theater and customer engagement/service is miserable.

Decent Place to See a Movie

I went here with my friends to see a movie a couple weeks ago. Except for the folks talking a few seats behind us, it was a nice time and we'll be going back soon.

Our first taste of NYC

My girlfriend and i went to NYC for the weekend. Our first stop was the AMC movie theater. We arrived 5 minutes before our movie was scheduled to start and thought we would have to stand in a long line to get tickets but the self checkout machines in the lobby put an end to that fear. next we traveled up 3 huge(!!!!)escalators to get to the theater. If anything set me back about this theater it was the escalators and how high up we had to go to get to the theater. before 9/11 i dont think i would have been as worried but all through the movie i kept worrying if something were to happen how would all of us fit down such a narrow escalator. maybe there was a fire escape... i didnt see one... but maybe thats how we would have gotten out of there. but that was my only worry. Our first intereaction with a real new yorkian was quite a shock. I had heard how angry and short tempered new yorkers are but no it was quite the opposite. when we went to get nachos for the show the guy was very patient and helpful. the show was great and my biggest relief was getting out of the theater alive, lol. overall it was a good experience the staff was friendly and if heights dont bother you than i guess the 11 floors is a plus. i would have preferred to be a little closer to the ground however. another thing i liked about this theater was the huge portions of nachos. midway through the show i still had nachos left! in philly the nachos are gone when the previews are over.

RE abbekommen's review

abbekommen's mistake was not realizing that when you go to movies specifically made for the dumbest people on the planet (i,e., SAW 5), you must expect to sit next to the dumbest people on the planet.

I regularly go to AMC 25 and rarely have problems -- but then again, I don't go to see slasher movies or other such fare. Tonight, for example, i will be seeing Doubt. I Doubt if anyone like abbekommen's friend is going to show up for that film.

ONE NIGHT OF RACISM AT THE AMC TIMES SQUARE

My girlfriend and I wanted to see a movie, she suggested SAW 5 since it was Halloween. The Times Square AMC was the only place showing the movie. We got our tickets early in order to get good seats. We sat down and right before the movie started in walked a thug with his girlfriend, shooting his mouth off, telling people to get up out of their seats so they could have them. He ended up sitting right beside us, and proceeded to take his timberland construction style boots off and smell up the entire area with his feet. We would have moved but the movie had started. His girlfriend repeatedly answered her phone throughout the movie after it started. Suddenly, out of nowhere about 2/3rds into the film he decided to slam his elbow into my face, and then backhand me for no reason at all!! I never even had words with him or gave him any dirty looks for his prior behavior, even though he deserved it. I looked at him and said ""What the hell are you doing??!!"" He acted half asleep and said ""aw, yo, sorry, I wuz sleepin, huh wha you sayin yo?"" I looked at his girlfriend (who looked pregnant) and she looked back at me and said ""too bad, watch yo damn movie an shut up"" I sprang up and went out into the lobby to get security. They called security over and no sooner then did the thug and his girl came out of the theater we were in, saying ""whats going own, we do kno wha is goin own?!?!"" I said ""then how did you know to come outside at this very moment?"" The security there at AMC were about half a dozen large angry looking black men, who said ""the police have been called"" but when they saw that he was black like they were, they then took a different stance and treated me (white guy) like I was the perp instead of the victim. If you want to hear the rest of this true event, and you won't believe it, check out the full posting of the incident I have up on craigslist community general bulletin boards online. Never again a patron of AMC.

Nice Movie theatre

I went there as I work in a law firm right around the corner on 42nd street and it's very convenient for me, and I went on a Friday, late like after 12am and I love it. I love the screen, you can sit up front and it's not like you are looking straight up like the Regal. I don't eat there but I just go there order my ticket online go swipe my credit card and it works for me. I haven't had a problem with it. Love it.

great, but bad, un-maintained ticketing machines

The theater in general is great: the seating, legroom and space is plentiful and their projectors are state of the art, but one of the biggest problems is how to get your tickets. Since it is right in the middle of the tourist haven of times square, it will invariably be packed at any given moment, and the automated kiosks - from where you can get your pre-paid tickets or regular tickets - never ever work. They are worse than the MTA card machines. I tried all of them last night, and so did everyone else. They are obviously over-used while not being maintained at all. This forces you to get in the long line like everyone else and risk missing the beginning of your movie. So, like with any other theater in NYC, get there early.

Buy tickets in advance

This is a wonderful theater one of my favorites up in the city. Comfortable, enough leg room. If youre inpatient like me i suggest you buy tickets in advance or use there credit card machines to buy tickets right from there. there food is priced regular as in every theater, best thing to try is pretzels with cheese delicious and affordable. some times you get an immature crowd so i try to go when the movie has been out for at least a week...

don't do it

This theater is a disaster waiting to happen. I tried to see a movie here last night. We paid our eleven bucks each and then tried to get to the theater. There are 25 theaters here and only one thin escalater (24"" wide) leading to them all - and one out!) The escalater was broken and there was an eight foot goon angrily guarding it from being used while broken. ""Well, how can we get to our theater?"" I asked. ""Take the elevator."" We looked at the elevator and the 100 or so people already waiting for it (one elevator, five at a time servicing 25 theaters). I pointed out the crowd to the goon. ""We're going to get the other elevator working soon."" he grunted. I asked for a refund and was told to go back to the window. The guy at the window said I couldn't get a refund until the show started. (What?!). I found the manager and after showing him the mini-riot that was brewing in the lobby and the terrible fire hazard that it represented, we miraculously got our money back instantly. On our way out, people started running up the down escalator in a desparate bid to meet their showtimes. Another giant was dispatched to prevent that insurrection from succeeding. By now ther were hundreds of people inthe lobby. The manager seemed to feel that it was much better to have them pay and then stand in the small lobby for perpetuity than to allow them to walk up the escalators or do anything resonable at all except treat their paying customers like chumps and prisoners. We got out of there and will never return. I'd hate to see how they would handle an actual emergency.

RUDE, OBNOXIOUS AUDIENCES

Quiz: What kind of movie-goer are you?
If you are: Someone who likes to pay $11 to ruin a movie for others by talking the entire time, refusing to shut your cell phone off, answering your cell phone, playing obnoxious games, or do just about anything else that is extremely rude to anyone else around you..... The AMC EMPIRE 25 is the theatre for you. The staff is more than happy to let you talk as loudly as you want through any show.

But, if you are: Someone who is mature enough to handle staying quiet long enough to watch a movie, or, you are generally excited about the fun of the theatre-going experience..... Choose any other theatre in this city. If something's playing at this theatre, it's probably always playing at the Loews Lincoln Square or somewhere downtown.

It's all about what's important to you. I could care less about concessions. This theatre has standard concessions.... unless of course you want microwave chicken tenders or freeze dried pizza. And, for the most part, the stadium seating, sound system, and screens are nice but every movie I've ever been to has been ruined by the immature crowds that wander in from off the noisy streets. For the most part, these crowds don't care what they're seeing. They just need a place to carry on with their stupid immature conversations about god knows what, because, apparently, there isn't any other place in the city to do things like that anymore.

lots of choice

this theatre always had a large audience of people pouring in from the streets for a respite. there are lots of good choices and the theatres seem to always been clean and comfortable. there are a couple huge screens that are a lot of fun. if going in the evening, especially the weekend, get there early for good seats! it will fill up!

Good Theatre Option In Times Square

You'd think it'd be overly touristy, but its more ghetto than touristy. Expect your crowd to be hootin-hollerin before the movie, but I've seen good etiquette during the theatre for the most part. The seats are very comfortable, thankfully equipped with armrests that can be moved out of the way (good for your cuddly date). Concessions are so-so at best, the service is very unprofessional and quite rude at times. Given that its Times Square, I don't recommend you spend too much as $10 is already pushing it for the ticket alone. The movie selection is always superb, including even the most Indie / foreign films that are available for viewing in such a mainstream market.

Yeah, it's a Ghetto Crowd

Sigh, unfortunately - the ghetto crowd that thinks everybody wants to hear their cell phone conversations and tolerate there general ghetto behavior - packs the theater. Forget about going on the weekends or weeknights. The overall atmoshpere and theater comfort make it worth calling in sick to work or taking a vacation day to catch a movie early on a weekday.

Beware of the crowds

Although the theater facilities (screens, seating, snack stands) are above-average, the young crowd that frequents this theater is absolutely horrifying. They are loud, rude and patently offensive. They talk among each other and even on cell phones during the film. And theater attendents do not do anything about it. The crowd has ruined too many films for me, and my friends and I refuse to return to this theater.
