Came here for Restaurant Week. The restaurant is smaller than I expected. The table bread was a warm foccacia with ricotta cheese spread.
We all opted for the seafood linguini as the appetizer, it was a very generous portion. It was a lemony-clam sauce with diced fish and shrimp.
For our entrees, the sauce used in the olive oil poached hake was very good but the fish was too salty. the grilled pork sausage was excellent with the dried apricots. The duck bolognese is equally wonderful.
There were 2 desserts-chocolate budino (bread pudding) and grapefruit sauce on the vanilla panna cotta was medicinally bitter.

I decided to take up the 1-star Michelin establishment under chef Missy Robbins at Columbus circle, partly to check out what Per Se diners are treated to – the same stunning views of Central Park! Alongside signature pasta creations, the brunch menu also had classic egg dishes, of which our table of 4 all ordered. We started off with the Affertati Misti platter, which includes a selection of cured artisanal meats like Prosciutto di Parma, Bresaola,Coppa, Spicy Salumi and Sweet Soppressata. They were perfect complements to the thick grilled bread glazed with olive oil. Equally outstanding was the complimentary ricotta dip starter that is perfectly seasoned with sea salt, chiles, herbs and olive oil. It almost tasted like butter! Our egg dishes were not very substantial and would not stand on its own. I preferred the scrambled eggs with whipped mascarpone and bottarga over the poached eggs, which were over-drenched with tomatoes. Nonetheless, we were left full from all the bread and ricotta!

The worst restaurant experience of my life. No exaggeration, no overstatement.
I came here on Valentine's Day 2010 and was absolutely appalled and shocked by the lack of accountability, unacceptable customer service, and poor culinary execution.
I understand Valentine's Day is an inordinately high-traffic, high volume evening. However, at a $95/per person price point, I expect superior customer service and flawless culinary execution regardless of the number of plates being turned out. Perhaps I am spoiled by my luxurious experiences at Le Bernardin and EMP but speaking objectively, my dining experience was absolutely atrocious - akin to a night out at White Castle drive through.
My spaghetti alla chittara was completely inedible - a sodium filled, greasy disaster. When I sent it back, the waiter informed me that the chef agreed with me that it was too salty. Well, thank you for that enlightening revelation. My pork chop was extremely dry, cooked to a disastrous oblivion and was also inedible. However, I did not bother asking for a new one as I did not want to be subject to yet another culinary blunder.
Mishaps aside, it was the blase and dismissive attitude espoused by the staff that was particularly infuriating. Never was a sincere apology offered, never a gesture of good will. Even though I verbally demonstrated my displeasure with my meal, the manager brushed me aside as if I were a third class citizen.
When the coat check staffer was rude to my boyfriend at Blue Hill, Dan Barber personally emailed me and offered his apologies. When I didn't care for my dessert at Le Bernardin, it was promptly replaced and I was offered a bevy of apologies. It is extremely evident that A Voce is not on the same plane, not even the same universe as these establishments. It is a standard of service they may aspire to achieve but never will due to their horrendous management protocols and complete void of customer service.
When I called the General Manager to discuss my situation, he informed me, ""Maybe this isn't a restaurant for you"" and took the same smug and haughty tone of the rest of his staff. It is no surprise to me that his attitude is reflected in all of his staff's. He was immediately defensive, unapologetic, and completely insulting. His only explanation was that ""it was a busy night"". Sorry, please try again. That is not an excuse for detestable customer service.
You're right A Voce, your restaurant is not for me. Because believe it or not, I think restaurants should serve edible food and treat their customers like decent human beings. These concepts may be novel to you. So until you can grasp these sophisticated and complex notions, you can keep pretending you're a classy restaurant. You had me fooled for a split second.
