04/01/2012 BEWARE OF THE BAR STAFF. WE WERE ROBBED AND ASSAULTED AT FAT CATZ . My husband and I went in on Thursday after going to the fabulous Preservation Hall (highly recommended). The band was fantastic, so I just had to dance. My purse strap broke, so I had my husband hold my bag while he sat at the bar and watched. Suddenly, a shot girl (yes, the ones you read about in other reviews) straddled my husband's lap and held onto the back of the bar. My husband asked her multiple times to get off but she wouldn't. He then called for me for assistance (he thought this was just a pesky shot girl). I asked the girl to get off his lap but she wouldn't. When I tried to peel her off of him, she began to punch me in the face. Then, a large guy standing nearby put me in a head lock while the shot girl continued to punch me. Of course, my husband got up to help me as I was being assaulted. It was during this time that SOMEONE (the bartender, we presume) pulled my purse from the bar where my husband had left it to defend me. Our id's, credit cards, camera (with a week's worth of pictures), and phones were stolen. The bouncer kept trying to convince me that it was probably the 'black guy' I was dancing with (even though he, himself, was black). He was trying to divert my attention to the matter at hand. The police came and were completely useless. They said that the shot girl's friends say that I assaulted her and they were unwilling to help. Clearly, they had no intention of doing anything. They even told my husband that he was probably the one who hit me. An ambulance came to evaluate me. Even though there was video surveillance, conveniently there was no one who had access to watch the video (and I'm sure it's gone 'missing' by now). I ended up with a concussion and needed further evaluation and 7 head/orbit xrays the next day.
It happened so fast, we really couldn't grasp what had happened until the next day. In retrospect, there were clearly a minimum of 4 employees at the bar in on the scam. We were an easy target because 1) I had a small bag 2) we were by the front door 3) we were by ourselves. I can assure you that we were not drunk, disorderly, or anything else that would warrant the kind of treatment we received. We were duped at Fat Catz. You've been warned.
