Given that our goal was to experience the famous Friday Galatoire's lunch, I can't say I was disappointed by the atmosphere. Every Friday the place bustles with local business people who take a late "liquid lunch." At first I was disappointed to be put in the more subdued upstairs area, but was grateful when I realized how deafeningly loud it was downstairs. We ordered an assortment for the table, starting with a nice and spicy bloody mary. The oysters en brochette (fried and wrapped in bacon) were deadly. Tasty, but a little dry, and one is enough. The crab salad was delicious -- super-tender crab topped with mayo and capers. My friends were raving about the fried veggies of eggplant and potato "chips," which I thought were just OK. The seafood gumbo was quite nice. The seafood average, but the roux delicious. For the second drink, the dirty martini was fine, but needed to be a little dirtier. Our waiter recommended the fried crab topped with fish or crab as the best thing on the menu. Indeed the crab was incredibly fresh and tender. But still heavy, with all the fried. A friend's fish was just OK. So all in all, worth the price? Not really, but it was fun to experience part of history in a place that fully encourages you lounge at your own pace.
I just got back from this place for the first time and I must say...I was surprised. They are very affordable for the good portion they give you. I got the budget breakfast which came with buttered grits, buttered toast, 2 pork sausage patties, and scrambled eggs with an orange juice. I assumed it would be a portion that wouldn't get me full so I was under the impression that I would leave with donuts to take home, but I didn't because I was good and FULL after that breakfast plate :). With that said, I didn't leave with any donuts lol. It was really good, like your wholesome Southern breakfast meal. The place is small but feels homely. There's also a coffee shop literally right across the street from them so the location is perfect. They don't stop serving breakfast on Sundays until noon which most places don't do that. Finding parking isn't a problem whatsoever either whether you're on your bike or in your vehicle. I recommend going down to Freret Street Poboys for their breakfast. I paid less than $7 for all of what I ate and drank there.
We had a party of eleven. When it came time to pay the bill, we asked if we could separate our tickets. She said "sorry, we don't do that here". Instead of offering to help in some way, she explained that we just needed to tell her the amounts to put on the cards when we were ready. So, we sat there for about 20 minutes calculating on the back of our ticket of who owed what. The manager then comes up about 30 minutes into it and asks if there's anything she can do to help. At that point we were almost done, so it would've been a little more helpful at the beginning of the process. Someone at our table politely said that we understood that we should've seen it on the menu, but it would've been nice of our waitress to have mentioned that at the beginning or before it was time to pay so we could've been quicker, to which the manager responded very condescendingly, "well it's on the menu, so...". Needless to say we won't be visiting this place with very rude service again.
Have to agree with a lot of posters that a lot of the food is only average. But the shrimp po boy and the fried chicken really do stand out. The shrimp was perfectly seasoned and cooked, and so tasty with the sauce. The bread was a little dry, but overall it was good. Fried chicken was the real star. DELICIOUS breading and so incredibly juicy and tender was the meat. Sadly, the shrimp creole and jambalaya were just so-so. Mother's is also famous for its Bloody Marys, which I have to say were quite good. Maybe a little spice could be bumped up, but the balance was really nice between all the strong flavors. Had to have two!
This legendary restaurant has so much history & the moment you step in the doors of Dooky Chase you see amazing ambiance, smell spectacular home cooked scents & immediately feel like family. I wasn't a huge fan of the Mac & Cheese, however the jambalaya, red beans & rice, shrimp, grits & bread pudding more than made up for it. The original owners just had their 60th wedding anniversary & still operate in the kitchen in the restaurant on a daily basis! (Make sure you say Hi!)
I ate here while visiting the 2014 Essence Music Festival. Since I have an allergy to wheat, I am limited on the selection of food in the area. I ordered the grilled shrimp, sautéed mixed veggies, and French fries. Delicious! I actually ate here twice and ordered the same thing the second time! I can honestly say that both times I was there, the customer service was lacking. However, they were super busy both times. Bottom line, good food and I would eat there again.
Best of Best right here, a open air restaurant facing all the excitement of Bourbon st. Food is one of the best I have had here in my opinion, very creative dishes with a mouth watering presentation and the service was very friendly and accommodating the manager on duty didn't hesitate to chat with us and make sure we were comfy and it's child friendly so we took the kids to eat with us.
Great customer service! Great Ambience! Excellent Food. Great Dining Experience! It was a treat to see Mrs. Chase take the time to greet her diners. It has been announced today that Mrs. Chase will be awarded the 2016 James Beard Award on May 2, 2016. It couldn't have been awarded to a more deserving chef. Congratulations!
It's definitely not worth the hype. The food's alright, and the po-boys are decent - but come on. I'll never figure out why this place is always so highly ranked among New Orleans restaurants.If you do go, yes, get the po-boy. But don't expect anything special or comparable to the wait you're going to have.
Here for moms bday and Saint's Raiders game..had dinner oysters and catfish platter food piled high and great price.came back next day for breakfast had sausage omelete, pancakes, grits, toast hashbrowns. Omg it was off the chain delicious..servers were very attentive.
