Within one year this figure had skyrocketed to $8 billion and is expected to climb to nearly $ 20 billion by 2027. This astounding growth is a reflection of soaring obesity rates, and the arrival of a new class of weight loss medication fueling a craze both in the USA and across the world.
Primary Care
During the Covid-19 pandemic my medical practice has been operating as normally as possible. The other day a young woman arrived wearing a surgical mask with a stack of medical records in hand, for a new patient appointment. Her difficulties began 6 weeks prior with intense tenderness in the right side of her neck just above the clavicle (collarbone) which varied in intensity over the course of about 10 days. Evaluation by her primary care physician uncovered newly elevated thyroid hormone levels. During our discussion she recalled a respiratory tract infection starting a week before the neck pain developed. Still complaining of lung congestion she denied fever or shortness of breath. Sitting comfortably, the thyroid was no longer tender but was slightly enlarged and unusually firm. Reading on it will become clear why my preliminary diagnosis is sub-acute thyroiditis, an inflammation of the thyroid following a viral respiratory tract infection, possibly Covid-19.

Contrave works like an appetite-suppressant, containing naltrexone, an opioid antagonist, and bupropion, an antidepressant. This niche combination means this medication comes with a boxed warning that alerts doctors to possible negative mental health effects, including suicidal ideation drug. However, it can also help with depression and may even aid with smoking cessation, though it’s prohibited for use in that way. Contrave’s unique profile makes it one of the less-frequently prescribed weight loss drugs.

A common question in my medical practice is whether those with Hashimoto’s have increased vulnerability to Covid-19 infection? There have been no formal studies of this as yet but in a poll of the 10 endocrinologists in my group none felt that Hashimoto’s was a risk factor for suppression of the immune system which could result in more severe viral complications. Also, there is no compelling evidence that those with Hashimoto’s have impaired ability to fight infections. Of great interest, a study published in 2022 reports that several cases of Grave’s disease or overactive thyroid function have resulted after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination

Ovarian Cancer
Namely, ERT can increase the risk of blood clots leading to strokes and embolisms and cause headaches, swelling, or edema. ERT is also often linked to an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer, but studies reviewed by Breastcancer.org have shown that the risk is only significant after using ERT 10 years or more (in the case of estrogen-only therapy). Combination HRT poses a much greater risk.
Lung Cancer
Fast forward to 2020, and early suspicions of cancer risk were confirmed true, with clinical safety trials finding at least an increased risk of pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, and lung cancer. In a trial of over 12,000 people taking Belviq, 7.7% developed cancer, equating to one additional cancer per 470 people. In addition to cancer, Belviq was widely marketed as the “first anti-obesity drug not to damage the heart,” a marketing tagline that still couldn’t protect it from its cancer risks. As a result, Belviq was formally withdrawn in February 2020.

Those already suffering from depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems were particularly vulnerable. Hypothyroidism
DTE stands for â€œdesiccated thyroid extractâ€ which is made up of thyroid hormones refined from pig thyroid and used to treat people with hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). This is possible because human and pig thyroid are very similar in the production of the 4 known thyroid hormones. For over 100 years, DTE had been used successfully to treat hypothyroidism.
Thyroid
Viral infection is thought to play a key role in the development of common thyroid diseases. Genetic factors probably determine who develops virus induced thyroid disease and the severity of symptoms. It is presently unknown how, or if, coronavirus plays a role in thyroid disease but we are on the verge of finding out.
Thyroid Cancer
Novo Nordisk clearly mentions the two drugs are not interchangeable and should be prescribed with extreme caution, as Ozempic has several contraindications and should not be used in patients with thyroid cancer and history of pancreatitis. FDA has now listed both Ozempic and Wegovy in shortage supply.
