Neighborhood Music School, established in 1911 and located in New Haven, Conn., is one of the largest independent nonprofit community arts school in the state. The school serves more than 3,000 students every year, and serves students of all ages with its staff of more than 120. More than 700 students receive financial aid at the school and in partnership programs. The institution's programs include instruction in 30 instruments, Suzuki instruction and voice. It has one of the largest ensemble programs in the country, such as the Greater New Haven Youth Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the NMS Children's Chorus. Its dance program features ballet, hip-hop, and modern dance and salsa. The school s early childhood arts education includes a state-certified preschool program. It also offers a jazz program and holds youth and adult drama classes. Additionally, it offers instruction in nonwestern instruments, such as African drums and steel band.
