An orthopedic doctor will be able to give you an accurate diagnosis of hip bursitis. The symptoms of hip bursitis can be confused with other hip problems, such as snapping hip syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis, and iliotibial band syndrome. Thus, a specialist should be able to rule out these conditions before continuing with any treatment.

Treatment options for knee pain will depend on the underlying cause. For example, if your pain is due to arthritis, there are many potential non-operative options that exist, including physical therapy, injections, bracing options, or medication and lifestyle changes (such as weight loss and exercise).
Primary Care
All patients are required to have pre-admission testing (PAT) before surgery to assess if you are medically fit to tolerate the surgical procedure. This will be scheduled with a General Medical Consultants physician. General Medical Consultants is located directly across from the JIS Orthopedics New Albany office. In some cases, your insurance may require pre-admission testing be done by your primary care physician. Pre-admission testing will include a history and physical, routine blood work, and an electrocardiogram (EKG). In some instances, other testing may be ordered. For example, a chest x-ray, or if you have a history of heart disease, a stress test may be ordered. These physicians may also coordinate any other consultations with medical specialists if they believe it is necessary for appropriate surgical optimization.
Family Practice
Dr. Snook has completed several research projects during his tenure that have been published in textbooks and peer reviewed journals. He has presented research at the International Society for Study of the Lumbar Spine, the North American Spine Society, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. From 2002-2018 he was a faculty member of the Mount Carmel Orthopedic Residency. He has instructed and mentored many orthopedic residents, family practice residents, internal medicine residents, medical students, and physician-assistant students. He is a member of the North American Spine Society and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery Dr. Snook has served the Mt. Carmel Health System as a physician leader. He has been a past Vice President of Orthopedic Surgery at Mt Carmel East, Chairman of Surgery at Mt Carmel New Albany 2015 and 2016. He is currently chairmen of the Medical Peer Review Committee and president elect of the medical staff there. He also is part of the co-management team with his colleagues and Mt. Carmel Health System.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome — Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when there is pressure on the median nerve through the passageway of bones and ligaments on the palm side of the hand. Symptoms can include a loss of sensation and weakness in the arm and hand.

In the office, orthopedic surgeons evaluate patients to diagnose injuries like these. You may be asked to get an X-ray of your knee as part of the visit. X-rays are very good at seeing your bones but not as good at seeing soft-tissue structures like ligaments. If you have an MCL injury your X-rays may look normal, but your physical exam may tell another story. Orthopedic surgeons can check your knee ligaments and figure out what is wrong in most cases. If a ligament injury is suspected, you might need an MRI to help see the extent of the sprain. MRI scans are better at seeing soft-tissue structures like ligaments that X-rays can’t see directly.

CT scans produce a detailed image of the layers of soft tissue. These scans help your doctor determine whether you will need surgery.
Chemotherapy
The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons are no longer recommending the routine use of antibiotics for prophylaxis prior to and after a routine dental procedure. There are exceptions to this including patients with immunocompromised status such as aids/HIV, chemotherapy, solid organ transplant, and other immunocompromised conditions. Additionally, more invasive dental procedures may require antibiotics. Lastly, patients with significant diabetes and difficult blood sugar control may also benefit from prophylactic antibiotics.

Sciatica
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body, running from your lower back down to the back of your legs. When the lower lumbar nerves become pinched, they can cause a sharp pain that radiates through your entire leg.

Pinched Nerve
A pinched nerve occurs when surrounding tissues, such as bones, ligaments, or discs apply too much pressure to a nerve. Nerve compression can be extremely painful and cause tingling, numbness, or weakness.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Surgery can also be done to remove part of or fix the cartilage. Most often this is an arthroscopic, minimally invasive surgery that only takes 1.5-3 months to fully recover.

Dr. Snook completed his Bachelor of Science from Indiana University South Bend graduating Summa cum Laude. He then completed his medical doctorate with honors while receiving several merit-based scholarships at Indiana University including the prestigious Pittman Surgical Scholarship. He was appointed the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. His orthopedic surgery residency was completed at Akron General Medical Center, now part of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he served as Chief Resident. He completed a fellowship in spinal surgery at the San Francisco Spine Institute in 2003. Since coming to Columbus, he helped build the largest orthopedic practice in Ohio. He is elated to now be a part of a world recognized center, Joint Implant Surgeons.
