Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
SWELLING: Often there is some swelling associated with oral surgery. You can minimize the amount of swelling by using ice packs on the outside of the face. The ice packs should be applied for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first 48 hours only. After 48 hours, start using warm, moist heat.
Jaw Surgery
People who can benefit from orthognathic surgery include those with an improper bite or jaws that are positioned incorrectly. Jaw growth is a gradual process and in some instances, the upper and lower jaws may grow at different rates. The result can be a host of problems that can affect chewing function, speech, long-term oral health and appearance. Injury to the jaw and birth defects can also affect jaw alignment. Orthodontics alone can correct bite problems when only the teeth are involved. Orthognathic surgery may be required for the jaws when repositioning is necessary.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr. Rusiecki is a native of Massachusetts and migrated west to Bowling Green State University where he lettered in Division I ice hockey for four years. Dr. Rusiecki attended The Ohio State University where he received his D.D.S. in 1993 and continued his training at WVU where he completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training in 2000. He is married to Mahreen Hashmi, M.D., an Ob/Gyn at West Virginia University Hospital. They have three children Evan, Mitch, and Emma.
Tooth Extractions
Although permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, there are a number of reasons why tooth extraction may be needed. A very common reason involves a tooth that has been too badly damaged, from trauma or decay, to be repaired. In the event that injured teeth cannot be saved or repaired, dental implants are often now utilized as replacements for missing teeth.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease or injuries. The bone is either obtained from a tissue bank, synthetic bone, or your own bone that is taken from the jaw.

Orthodontics
Orthognathic surgery is needed when jaws don't meet correctly and/or teeth don't seem to fit with jaws. Teeth are straightened with orthodontics and corrective jaw surgery repositions misaligned jaws. This not only improves facial appearance, but also ensures that teeth meet correctly and function properly.
