Foothills Correctional Institution is a 900-plus-bed facility operated by the North Carolina Department of Correction. It houses inmates between the ages of 18 and 25. The institution has more than 700 close security single cells. Foothills Correctional Institution also features vocational and academic classrooms, as well as a warehouse, recreational area and dining hall. It provides educational and vocational programs. In addition, the institution operates a minimum custody unit that provides community support services for inmates. Foothills Correctional Institution participates in an in-service training consortium with Western Youth Institution. The North Carolina Department of Correction is governed by the State of North Carolina.
