Small Town, Prices Outrageous

If you enjoy being priced gouged, then Blue Mountain Foods is the store for you. Situated in the "going the route of the old time ghost town" route of the Southwestern burbe of Monticello, Utah, this store is the closest to a supermarket this town can boast. Prices are $1 to $3 more than City Market or Walmart, the variety is minimal, and don't expect friendliness if you're labeled an "outsider".

The mayor owns this store, and people in town were forced to vote for him if they didn't want the prices to go even higher. So, make the effort to drive the 45-60 minutes to Moab, Utah or Cortez, Colorado to their City Market (each town has one), or Walmart (eastern end of Rte 160 in Cortez).

Overall

True, its the only grocery in town. True, prices tend to run higher than Wal-Mart. True, some of the workers don't understand customer service. True, the produce often looks abused and packaged salads are brown on the edges. Nonetheless, I was happily surprised to find many of the canned goods and dairy prices competitive with Safeway and Harmon's. Selection was adequate for every-day cooks. I think the store tries hard to deliver items sought by the locals. The assistant manager was more than willing to check with her suppliers to see if things I wanted could be special ordered.
