Tips & Advice
What is a wheel caster?
Wheel caster is the angle created by the steering pivot points, from the front to the back of the vehicle. It is positive if the line angles forward, and negative if it angles back. A positive caster typically makes the car or truck more stable at higher speeds.
What is the camber angle of a wheel?
The camber angle of a wheel is the measured angle in degrees, between a wheels vertical alignment, perpendicular to the road. Wheels perfectly perpendicular to the road are at 0 degrees. This is considered ideal to prevent uneven wear on the surface of the tire and also to maximize standard performance. This is part of the alignment of the vehicle and can be adjusted for performance purposes.
Does car wheel choice impact the gas mileage on a car?
Wheels can absolutely affect gas mileage. Larger, heavier wheels and tires create added weight to the car, generally decreasing mileage; lighter-weight wheels are prone to enhancing gas mileage.
Are custom wheels safe to use?
As long as the wheels are made by an accredited manufacturer or machine shop, they are safe to use within the boundaries set forth by the manufacturer. There can be exceptions with random wheel failures, but, generally, they are completely safe as long as they are installed correctly and driven within the guidelines set forth by the manufacturer.
Does changing the wheels impact the performance of a car?
Changing wheels can affect the performance of the car. Size, width, and weight are among the factors that affect performance. Some wheels emphasize straight-ahead performance, usually associated with drag racing, while others are associated with performance and handling, while still others are purely ornamental in nature. Tires have much more impact on performance than wheels, however.
How long does it take to replace car wheels?
It should not take longer than one or two hours to replace wheels on a standard car or truck. The process includes removal of wheels, dismounting of the tires (if they are going on the new wheels), mounting and balancing of each tire and wheel, then mounting the wheels on the car. A skilled mechanic can do it in an hour or less. Extreme custom jobs may require longer.
How much do car wheels cost?
Car wheels vary dramatically in cost. Custom and aftermarket wheels can start around $100 and run into the $1,000s for high performance, custom, and high-end brands. There are manufacturers that make knock-off styles of high-end brands for lower costs. There are also used-wheel stores and salvage yards and endless online sites that can be great sources of affordable and stylish wheels.
What is the backspace on a car wheel?
Backspace on a wheel is the measured distance from the inside edge of the wheel to the mounting face. More backspace means the wheel sits deeper into the wheel well. This must be carefully considered as it brings the tire and wheel closer to the wheel well and the vehicle’s suspension parts, increasing risk of them rubbing. This can damage both the tires and the suspension.
What are custom car wheels?
Custom wheels are wheels purchased to replace the factory standard wheels. They can vary in size, color and weight and performance.
What are aftermarket car wheels?
Aftermarket wheels are any wheels that did not come from the factory as standard equipment.
