Dental Examination

Early diagnosis of periodontal disease yields the possibility of early treatment, which can significantly improve patient outcomes. Furthermore, treatment for periodontal disease in its earliest stages is much less invasive than that of advanced periodontitis.
X-rays
Periodontal screenings are recommended twice yearly by the American Dental Association. They are included in routine dental check-ups as a preventative measure. Dentists can identify gum disease with a simple in-office screening. Usually, this includes a visual inspection of the gums for redness and puffiness, as well as to determine whether the gums have receded or begun to form pockets between the teeth. A periodontal screening may also include dental x-rays to determine whether the supporting bone structure beneath the gums have begun to deteriorate.

Teeth Cleaning
Family Dentistry Associates of Monona prides itself at the distance we go to provide a clean and sterile environment for our patients. We are OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Agency) compliant and abide by the recommendations of the CDC (Center for Disease Control). We have an annual infection control training/update to keep up with the state and federal guidelines. All of the staff including doctors, hygienists, assistants and office personnel, are fully trained and updated annually in proper infection control and practice universal precautions. We go through a number of checklists each and every day to make sure our office is disinfected before and after each patient is seen. Our instruments are ran through an ultrasonic cleaning solution, placed in heat indicated sterilization pouches and then heat sterilized in an autoclave. Our operatory rooms are sprayed and wiped with hospital grade disinfectant cleaners that are effective against BCG, staphylococcus, MRSA, VRE, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, human immunodeficiency virus-HIV, and hepatitis B and C virus. We use many disposable items which means, each patient has their own. Items that are not available in a disposable form are wrapped in plastic barriers to prevent any kind of infection transmission. Fluoride Treatment
Many years ago scientists started to notice that children who were born and raised in areas with natural fluoride in drinking water had fewer cavities than children in other areas. Fluoride absorbed by your body when teeth were forming (during mother’s pregnancy to early childhood) integrates into the structure of enamel and makes it stronger.

Sealants are thin layers of resin that are placed on the pits, fissures, and grooves of molars to prevent decay on these surfaces.

Crowns
Inlays and Onlays are lab-made restorations that are placed on teeth when the cavity or lost tooth structure is too large to be restored by a simple filling. The process of making an inlay is very similar to a crown. After the tooth is prepared, it is cemented or bonded to the tooth.
Bridges
1- Crowns and bridges usually take 2 or 3 appointments to complete. On the first appointment, the tooth/teeth are prepared, impressions are taken, and a temporary crown is placed on your tooth/teeth.

Root Canal Treatment
If for any reason the pulp space is exposed to the outside, the tissue becomes contaminated and eventually infected. The exposure of pulp happens in many circumstances, such as when you have a large cavity or a fractured tooth. Your dentist can explain the exact reason for damage to this tissue. In these cases, the treatment is usually root canal treatment.
Apicoectomy
1- Swelling, minor pain and/or skin discoloration may be experienced following the surgical procedure. This will be temporary.

The procedure itself is painless when performed by an experienced dentist or oral surgeon, and the recovery process is usually equally simple.
Bone Grafting
You will have several sutures (stitches) placed at the surgical site. These sutures may or may not be resorbable. If you have been told that you received external silk sutures, they have to be removed by us. The sutures will cause a pulling of your tissue over the bone grafting site. Since the bone graft site will have approximately 15 % more bone fill than what was naturally there, it is imperative that you do not pull up your lips or cheeks to show or examine the area. The undue pressure will cause the sutures to widen away from the surgical site, expose bone, create more pain, and delay healing dramatically. This delay can lead to the need for the area to be sutured again when you are seen for your 1 week post-surgical evaluation. The sutures will remain in place for 2 to 3 weeks depending on the size of the graft, the severity of the pathology, and the condition of the tissue being sutured.

Braces
Also, some electric brushes (Sonicare) produce sonic vibrations that are difficult to mimic with a hand brush! Other electric brushes like Oral-B and Rotadent have small heads that help you access hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. This aspect is more important when you are talking about someone with orthodontic braces or a history of gum disease.
