The staff was so courteous when I went in for my first cleaning, then I went back for a whitening session. They filed all of my insurance for me and everyone made me feel relaxed while I was getting my exam. It's time for my next exam and I will definitely be going back. The dr. is very kind as were the 2 hygenists I have gotten to meet. A very professional atmosphere with great staff to make you feel at home. Now that my teeth are so many shade whiter, I am all smiles!

Dental implant restorations cannot be performed for up to three months after the implant surgery to ensure the patients has completely healed from implant surgery. This healing period allows the gum tissue to recover and avoid any further trauma.

Dr. Portacci has been setting the highest standards of excellence in dentistry since graduating from the LSU School of Dentistry in 2004. Prior to entering dental school, he attained his Bachelor of Science degree at Tulane University. After earning his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree, Dr. Portacci completed a residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina. He served for 3 years as a dentist in the U.S. Navy before going into private practice. Now an esteemed member of the Mobile area dental community, Dr. Portacci is licensed to practice in Alabama and is an active member in many leading dental organizations, including the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Alabama Dental Association and the Mobile Area Dental Society.

Space Maintainers
Since primary teeth guide the permanent teeth into place, infants with missing primary teeth or infants who prematurely lose primary teeth may require a space maintainer, a device used to hold the natural space open. Without a maintainer, the teeth can tilt toward the empty space and cause permanent teeth to come in crooked. Missing teeth should always be mentioned to your family dentist. The way your child cares for his/her primary teeth plays a critical role in how he/she treats the permanent teeth. Children and adults are equally susceptible to plaque and gum problems—hence, the need for regular care and dental check-ups.
Teeth Cleaning
Twice a year, you should schedule a routine dental cleaning. During this visit, one of our dental hygienists will remove plaque from your teeth, especially from places where your brush can’t reach, such as underneath the gum line and in-between teeth. We will then clean your teeth and apply fluoride to help protect your teeth once you leave the office.
Fluoride Treatment
Tooth decay is a progressive disease resulting in the interaction of bacteria that naturally occur on the teeth and sugars in the everyday diet. Sugar causes a reaction in the bacteria, causing it to produce acids that break down the mineral in teeth, forming a cavity. Dentists remove the decay and fill the tooth using a variety of fillings, restoring the tooth to a healthy state. Nerve damage can result from severe decay and may require a crown (a crown is like a large filling that can cap a tooth, making it stronger or covering it). Avoiding unnecessary decay simply requires strict adherence to a dental hygiene regimen: brushing and flossing twice a day, regular dental check-ups, diet control and fluoride treatment. Practicing good hygiene avoids unhealthy teeth and costly treatment.

Dental Examination
There are a number of things you can do to help protect your smile and your overall health. Visiting your dentist regularly, at least twice a year, allows us to thoroughly clean your teeth and recognize any potential problems early (i.e. cavities, gingivitis, etc.) before they become more serious. Dental exams give us insight on whether the patient is getting proper nutrition, maintaining a proper oral hygiene regimen and whether there are any growth or development problems.

Oral Surgery
A. One of our staff members will compile your medical and dental history during your first visit. If you are on multiple medications, please bring a list with you. We will examine your teeth and gums, screen you for oral cancer, make X-rays of your teeth as needed and complete a TMJ (temporomandibular or jaw joint) exam. After we review your dental profile, we will discuss a diagnosis with you. If treatment such as a root canal (endodontics), braces (orthodontics) or oral surgery is needed, we will plan to treat you in our office or refer you to a specialist. We will discuss your options for treatment and costs and help you determine the best plan to fit your needs.
Tooth Extractions
To potentially stave off this result, an extraction of one, several or all of the wisdom teeth may be advised. If that is the case, we have the equipment and training needed to perform such extractions, with an absolute minimum of discomfort. Ask our staff for more information regarding tooth extractions if you feel you may need one.

Periodontal Surgery
In certain cases, periodontal surgery may be recommended to treat periodontal disease when non-surgical treatment is ineffective. We may advise procedures such as pocket reduction, soft tissue grafts or bone regeneration to treat periodontal disease. If a tooth has been lost due to periodontal disease, dental implants are always an option for permanent tooth replacement.
