GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, affects millions of people each year. Stomach acid or bile can back up through the food pipe (esophagus) and irritate the lining. If you have burning pain in your chest after eating, you might have GERD, especially if the pain becomes worse when you lie down. Urinary Tract Infection
Urinary tract infection is a common infection of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. The urinary tract refers to just the bladder and the urethra, and an infection can develop in either of these areas. These infections occur much more frequently in women than in men and can cause intense pain.
Prostate Cancer
The prostate is a gland that is only found in men. It is located just below the bladder surrounding the urethra, which carries urine from the bladder to the penis. Some men over the age of 50 have an enlarged prostate. One of the reasons for an enlarged prostate is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is not a form of prostate cancer and does not lead to prostate cancer. For some men with BPH, the enlarged prostate puts pressure on the urethra.

Carpal tunnel release is an outpatient procedure performed to relieve pressure on the median nerve and reduce the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. This procedure can help restore muscle strength and dexterity and is typically performed on patients who have had persistent symptoms that do not respond to conservative treatment methods.

Thyroid Cancer
The thyroid gland controls much of the body’s metabolism while the parathyroid controls calcium in the blood. These glands are located close to each other but are otherwise unrelated. The most common surgery for thyroid cancer is thyroidectomy, or removal of the thyroid gland. For parathyroid cancer, which is quite rare, the choice of surgery depends on whether the cancer is contained within the gland or has spread (metastasized) to nearby lymph nodes, lung tissue, etc. As with most cancers, the earlier the diagnosis of thyroid and parathyroid cancer, the higher the cure rate. Thyroid nodules are usually benign and parathyroid tumors are often benign, as well. Too little calcium in the blood is known as hyperparathyroidism while too much calcium in the blood is called hyperparathyroidism.

Ultrasound
If an abdominal aortic aneurysm is suspected, an aortic ultrasound will be ordered to confirm this diagnosis. Ultrasound utilizes sound waves in scanning the aorta to give detailed information concerning the blood flow and quality of musculature around the area. The procedure requires a soft gel to be spread across the area to be observed, which helps the sound waves travel between the machine and the body. The actual imaging itself is painless, but if the area to be imaged was tender beforehand, some discomfort may ensue.

MRI provides physicians with a noninvasive method of obtaining high-quality images. It combines a powerful magnet with an advanced computer system and radio waves to produce accurate, detailed pictures of organs and tissues in order to diagnose a variety of medical conditions.

In some cases, a contrast material, gadolinium, may be injected through an intravenous (IV) line into a vein in your hand or arm. The contrast material enhances the appearance of certain details. The contrast material used for MRIs is less likely to cause an allergic reaction than the contrast material used for CT scans.

Vasectomy
Our urologists perform the latest, state-of-the-art no-scalpel vasectomies, medical sterilization procedures for men who are sure they no longer want children. Vasectomy is over 99 percent effective at sterilization and lasts permanently. The simple surgery is performed in the office or clinic. The surgeons cut or block off the small tubes in the scrotum that carry sperm so the sperm cannot leave the body and cause pregnancy. The procedure can be done in a matter of minutes, either with an incision or with the no-scalpel, no-cut method, and the patient can go home that day.
Robotic Surgery
Hernias are extremely common and occur when soft tissue bulges through a weak spot in the groin or stomach or a surgical incision. The five main types of hernias are inguinal, femoral, umbilical, incisional and hiatal. Inguinal hernias occur in the inner groin while femoral hernias occur in the outer groin. Umbilical hernias occur at the navel or belly button while hiatal hernias occur in the upper stomach, and incisional hernias occur around surgical incisions. Common symptoms are bulges, swelling and pain, yet some cases have no symptoms. All hernias should be treated because they will not go away on their own and often get worse. The surgeons at Mason City Clinic use both open and minimally invasive robotic surgery to repair or remove hernias.

Ingrown Toenails
A bunion is a common condition that involves an abnormal, bony bump at the base of the big toe, causing the joint to swell outward and become painful. The big toe may also turn inward toward the second toe as a result of the enlarged joint, which can then lead to difficulty walking, ingrown toenails and corns and calluses. A bunion can form when there is an improper balance of forces exerted on the joints of the foot, causing instability in the joint of the big toe.
Hip Replacement
Sometimes the best way to relieve pain and restore function to a joint is for an orthopedic surgeon to replace all or part of it with prosthesis (an artificial joint). Hip replacement prostheses are intended to restore function to the joint and relieve pain associated with arthritis, other chronic conditions, or traumatic injury. Prostheses are designed to move like a regular joint. They are made of durable plastic and metal parts that fit together snugly but glide smoothly. The hip replacement pieces are shaped like the structures they replace – for example, the damaged bones in a ball-and-socket joint of a hip or shoulder are replaced with a metal ball and plastic socket. They are held to the surrounding bone either with a locking mechanism or with special bone cement.

Initially Suzanne got cortisone shots in both of her knees from Dr. Jones to alleviate the pain. It seemed to work in her right knee, but the pain in her left knee returned quickly. So it was at that point that Suzanne and Dr. Jones together agreed that getting a total knee replacement in her left knee would be the best solution to her extreme pain and continued difficulty walking.

Skin cancer frequently occurs on the head and face, areas that are typically uncovered and exposed to the sun’s harmful rays. Our physicians are experts in skin cancer excision (removal) procedures. Treatment is based on the type of skin cancer. Melanoma is the most serious and deadly type of skin cancer. Squamous cell cancer, though much less likely to be deadly, is still a serious type, followed by basal cell carcinoma, which is unlikely to be life-threatening but still requires treatment. It rarely spreads to other parts of the body. This type of skin cancer has a high cure rate. When untreated, basal cell carcinomas can become large enough to cause disfigurement. In rare cases, basal cell carcinoma can spread to other parts of the body and become life-threatening.

Hammertoes are an abnormal “V”-shaped bending of the little toes. Caused by stiffened tendons, hammertoes often form because of a muscle imbalance, arthritis, a hereditary condition, an injury or tight shoes that squeeze the toes. A fracture is a break or crack in a bone that occurs when the bone cannot withstand outside forces, often as a result of trauma or disease. Fracture, break and crack all refer to the same thing. Fractures can range from a small crack in the bone to complete separation. Hip fractures are often caused by falls, motor vehicle accidents or sports injuries. Normal activities can also cause fractures for people at a higher risk, including those with low bone density (osteoporosis), bone tumors, cancer or brittle bone disease (osteogenesis imperfecta).

An epidural steroid injection is a minimally invasive procedure that can help relieve pain caused by herniated disc or spinal stenosis. Medicines are delivered to the spinal nerve through the epidural space, the area between the protective covering of the spinal cord and vertebrae. Steroids work by reducing swelling and inflammation of injured tissue. The goal is to reduce pain so that you may resume normal activities and a physical therapy program.

General Podiatry
Our podiatry department specializes in diagnosing and treating all disorders and conditions of the feet. Feet problems can affect people of all ages, but they are most common in older people, diabetics and athletes. Podiatrists provide medical and surgical treatment of foot conditions that are caused by injury, disease or genetics. Each foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints and 100s of ligaments, muscles and tendons that are all under frequent pressure from daily activities. This puts the foot at high risk for injury and other damage. Seventy-five percent of Americans will experience foot problems at some point in their lives. People with diabetes are at high risk for developing problems with their feet. More than half of diabetics lose sensation in their feet due to nerve or blood vessel damage, and they can hurt themselves without knowing it. To make things worse, diabetes slows healing and weakens the immune system, so what may seem like an inconsequential injury can quickly become a major problem. Even the smallest foot and ankle injuries such as a blister or ingrown toenail can lead to infection and tissue death.

Ingrown Toenails
An ingrown toenail is a common condition that involves the corner of the toenail growing into the skin of the toe, causing pain, swelling and infection. This can occur as a result of wearing shoes that are too small or tight, cutting the toenails too short, injury to the toenail or a naturally curved toenail. While this condition can affect any toe, it most commonly affects the big toe. If left untreated, an ingrown toenail is likely to develop an infection and may even require surgery to remove the nail.
Plantar Fasciitis
There is a ligament along the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia that stretches from the heel to the base of the toes. If the ligament is forced to stretch beyond its limit, it may become inflamed and result in heel pain. This condition is called plantar fasciitis. Patients often complain of discomfort in the heel, the arch of the foot or the back of the leg when walking.

In addition to making these activities more comfortable and efficient, orthotics treat problems with the feet, ankles, knees, hips or back that are due to abnormal movements of one or both feet.
