This place is a small restaraunt on Lake Street that you would most likely miss if you were simply driving by. It is far from a chain or fusion restaraunt meant to serve tourist-like diners; it is simply a cafe that aims to serve the tastes of the local Somali community, and really, who could ask for anything more authentic? The staff was generally helpful, and willing to give reccomendations to me when I admitted I was new to Somali cuisine. And the prices are fantastic (usually about a dollar cheaper than what is printed on the menu- which you have to ask for at the register) and the portions are meant to serve two or more people.
No decor; drinks come in styrofoam cups, paper napkins, sometimes messy tables. This is not a fancy restaraunt by any means; it is merely a great small diner with fantastic food. Think of it as a small town mom-and-pop diner, but with better spices.
A lunch/dinner meal will generally consist of a meat entree (some which are not listed on the menu, such as'chicken choppers', grilled seasoned chicken breast cut into bite sized pieces) served with your choice of bread, pasta, or seasoned basmati rice. This will be served with a simple salad (iceburg, tomato and cucumber with a vinegarette), a drink, and a banana (Yes, a banana. This amuses almost every non-Somali first-timer). This whole meal will generally cost you about 9 dollars, and is enough to serve two.
Reccomendations- if you're fond of spiced chai, I reccomend getting their 'somali tea', which is good with milk. You can get it as your drink with the meal, or individual for $1. The basmati rice is fantastic, and I get it every time. For meat, I reccomend their phillysteak or goat. (While I haven't ordered it myself, one of the people I dined with said their salmon is grilled perfectly.) Do takeout if you don't want to dine in. It'll last you for a few meals of leftovers. The green chili sauce they serve is SUPER HOT, but most of the food is savory.
