Bad service from the minute we walked in the door, to the minute we stepped out. The Mexicans practically beg for a tip, reminding you to 'give 15%.' I can see why they need to remind people, given their bad service they are probably used to making less than average in tips. If they only could grasp the concept of good service translating to a tip that exceeds 15%. The manager is terribly unpleasant, I can see why the wait staff don't smile or have any manners. I had spicy pork tacos which were terribly dry and bland. I applied the table salsa to add some flavor. My husband had enchaladas which were sub-par. Will NEVER go back or recommend this place to anyone. There are many Mexican restaurants on this corner, this has the least quality overall.

food was o.k. service was good. margaritis were excellent. nice astmosphere. awfull doesn't begin to describe how terrible the guacomole was. it was the worst i have ever had. i could not even eat it!! it was the consistency of a milkshake. i think they put avocados in a blender until smooth. it's just gross. no flavor. no onion, tomatos, jalepenos, garlic, lime, or cilantro. i know this is not the way there mom taught them to make guacomole. no time or effort involved. go ahead, order, you have been warned.

Just went to Botanas for the first time after going to many other Mexican restaurants around Milwaukee. We were impressed. The patio was nice, each table had an umbrella. We got tons of refills on chips and salsa and water was refilled promptly. The margaritas were super and our food was great. We had empanadas and tamales and both had good portions. The service was great. We were not rushed at all, even though the patio was full by the time we were done. I will definitely go back and bring friends and out of town guests. Highly recommend Botanas for awesome Mexican food!

My husband, my friend and I stopped in at Botanas for what we thought was going to be a good dinner. We ordered the most standard appetizer, guacamole. Unfortunately it was very bland, had no flavor and wasn't very fresh.. We had to ask for extra limes (which were dry) to give it some flavor but our attemps failed.
The plates came without basic items (limes, tortillas). The shrimp coctail came with no crackers, lime, cilantro, etc.... Also the shrimp weren't deveined. The beer was cold, that's good. I guess this place is good for patrons who just want to drink and don't care for well prepared Mexican food.
The past two times I have gone to this restaurant they have attempted to cheat us out of money. The first time, they charged my boyfriends credit card for twice the amount that they were supposed to. We caught it on his credit card statement and complained to the manager. They did refund us the money, so we figured it was an honest mistake.
I was there again last night for dinner and the bill was $69.20 I paid $60 cash and they were to put the rest on the credit card, which would have been $9.20. The man who took our money charged the card for $19.20. When I disputed this with him, he pulled a roll of bills out of his pocket (including many singles, which I assume were his tips, so I'm not sure why he pocketed the money I paid the bill with in the first place) and stated that we only paid him $50. We got the manager involved and he simply said "My employee says you only paid us $50." I explained to him that I in fact had given him $60 and asked him how we were going to resolve this since it was basically a case of my word vs. the employee. The manager had nothing to say and would not refund us the $10.
I know it's a small amount of money, however it's the principle. The man obviously had pocketed the money. On top of that, since we all know this is a place people go for margaritas, who knows how many drunk people they are cheating out of money?
If you do choose to frequent this restaurant, be careful when you pay your bill.

We found out about Botanas when it first opened because a Mexican-American frien recommended it. At that time it was a tiny restaurant and always packed. Business has been so good that the restaurant has expanded several time and is still packed. The bustling atmosphere excudes pride and energy.
There is good reason for this. The menu is extensive. Sometimes it is difficult to decide which excellent dish to order. The food is authentic Mexican. Mole's and seafood dishes not found at other local places along with other unusual dishes make this the place to go. My favorite is enchiladas mole poblano.
I think the service is quite good. The owner comes around to greet each table. Every employee is Mexican-American, unlike almost all Mexican restaurants. Everyone is so friendly.
Skip La Fuentes! It used to have the authenticity and flair of Botana's but has completely lost that. I am completely puzzled by the negative comments. I guess some people don't know good food tastes like.

Unimpressed. I would rather go to Taco Bell which I haven't gone to since college. Maybe they should revisit their menu and hire new people that will provide service. The other couple we went with was so embarrassed about their choice of restaurants. It was our first time there.

The environment - from the mural on the wall, to the tables and the chairs, to the ambient music - gives this restaurant a very authentic feel. Although I was already on a short vacation, stepping into the restaurant made me feel so much more relaxed - as if I were in a whole different country.
Service was exceptionally quick. Our orders came quickly, and were tasty, but not exactly something worth raving about. I enjoyed the ambiance more than anything.

Jaime....i just love your resturant...service food all great....and its fun to watch you and your wife get smashed at the bar! I live in the neighborhood and try to come monthly...its great to see you do well. Id encourage those who are coming to the Latin Quarter for the first time....Botana's and/or La Perla are the places to go.

Stopped for dinner the other night about nine. Waitstaff said they were closing early, but the manager said they would serve us as there were other patrons in the restaurant, so we stayed.
Ordered drinks and fajitas. Everything came at once - the drinks, the food...and the bill! Soon the other patrons left and the waiter asked us to pay, so they could close the till. He returned with the change and a styrofoam container and told us they were closing and asked if we wanted to take the food home with us!
I don't think we were in the restaurant for more than 20 or 25 minutes!
They must've wanted the quick buck and don't care about their reputation.
Rude service makes this a total deal-killer. With food only on par with others - skip this place and try one of the many friendly Mexican restaurants in the area.

I love mexican food, and was so impressed with everything. The drinks were strong, and even with eating I left with a little buzz. The aura of the place is amazing, and romantic a little if you get the right table. Jaime, I am bringing my date, and I want to test the real thing with him, since he is latino, I am sure he will love it too!
