Unprofessional. 'Family' drama. Don't know what happened with these folks.Brought my truck over, transmission was slipping. Referred from high school friend of owner. Thinking twice now. After I dropped my truck off, they said they'd get to it next week. I returned and asked the technician if I could use my truck for an errand. He gave me keys, fired it up, noticed CEL was on, went to the shop, asked. Wife of owner just came through the door and also works there respectfully tried to answer my questions about the codes. I realize the wife didn't know I wanted to grab my truck for an errand. Maybe she thought I came by to start trouble. Mel comes comes out, stating the codes were always there, not his fault, etc. Very defensive, I was taken aback, I didn't say anything. Walked back into the garage, slams the door, and I hear him blast-off: "f*'n a*hole, don't f*'n come back then". I ask the lady, what happened? She explains that I implied the shop caused my codes and I offended the owner. Mel comes back, doubles down on the defensive. He's been in the 'biz' forever, he's been around the block and knows all games. Veins bulging out of his neck, spit flying out when yelling. In a calm voice I tell him it's a misunderstanding, explain how I wanted to use the truck for an hour, was given keys, saw the CEL, asked Q's. He tells me, well you shouldn't have taken it out then! The truck never went in gear, and I was asking if it was safe. He said I was going to get half price until I angered him. $2500 for stock overhaul of a 47RE is NOT half off. That's only half if I was mislead into buying a new core! Eventually he realized it was a misunderstanding, but insisted it didn't matter. He tells his tech to pull the truck out, I ask the tech what gives, couldn't look me in the eyes, sorry, sorry, sorry. Shuffles away. I bet this shop puts out work, but I just got the 'drunk dad' customer service experience I won't soon forget! Want yours? Visit Academy. Cash/bank-check only.

From Business: We are the experts in transmission repair and complete car care - clutches, brakes, factory scheduled maintenance, electrical, check engine lights, radiators, ove…
I've been looking for a fair & reliable mechanic/ auto repair business since the company I used to take my vehicles to went out of business. I've tried several businesses/mechanics in the Middletown area but haven't really been satisfied for one reason or another. However, I have been very pleased with the expertise, experience, professionalism, honesty, openness & fairness of AAMCO on Fulton Street in Middletown after taking my car there for brake work. I used to think they only did transmissions but found out that they do total car care. They were recommended to me & I would recommend them to others as well.
So my 2008 Mazda 3 was having transmission problems. My car would only let me go through gears 1-3. So I take it to the Dealership. Dealership took a few days to look into it and perform a repair. The dealership ended up making the issue even worse. After the dealership performed their "repair" my car would now only go through gears 4-5. The dealership said the only step after that would be to replace the transmission. After feeling screwed by the dealership I went to Academy Tranmissions. What a difference! Friendly owners and an attitude which felt like they truly cared about me and my car. Academy Transmissions was quick and accurate in finding out the true issue with my car. Academy Transmission successfully resolved an issue with my wiring harness and saved my car from a very costly transmission replacement. Go to Academy Transmissions! They will absolutely take care of you. The knowledge and skill of Academy's crew is unbeatable! I am an extremely satisfied customer.
Think twice before taking your car there. Took way too long above normal to finish a job and car is still with same problem. Did not even put the dip stick back on, left it on top of radiator. Did not answer calls, constantly changed price and he even got defensive on the phone when questioned why is it taking so long. Worst customer experience ever.
They gave me all the information needed to diagnose my car.Great customer care and service . Definitely gonna recommend them to all my friends and family.
This place is a scam beware I would suggest you go someplace else before going to Academy Transmissions, I had my transmission services there and was told my tranny would last the rest of the life of my car but that wasn't the case I'm back a year and a half later they only warrantied for a year but owner Mel will tell you it will go for rest of cars life. I then went back and was asked to pay additional 1500 for the same problem. After complaining about this to Better Business Bureau peer refused to service me , no good stay away if u don't want to lose money
