The purpose of these modalities is to resolve the effects first seen with an injury. Concentrating mostly on the management of pain and inflammation, passive therapies help to promote healing for a faster recovery. Active therapy consists of actively engaging the patient in their recovery. This is an essential factor in returning back to physical activity and absolutely necessary for participation in sports. In specific sequence, active therapies must address flexibility and range of motion, strength and muscle endurance and finally proprioception, coordination and agility. The three parameters must be restored to at least pre-injury status in order for the patient to return to activities.
