SOUTH MIAMI, FL. – One the last American-style, western-theme restaurants in the city, Shorty’s BBQ continues to spice the palates of locals and travelers alike. I had 48-hours left in Miami and I couldn’t leave without tasting that famous homemade BBQ sauce of theirs.I went cruising down South Dixie Highway at high noon, when I saw their iconic flagship store with its bright red neon lights that read “SHORTY’S.” Just then, I flashed back in time. Edward Louis “Shorty” Allen, who started the business back in 1951 from a barbecue stand, passed away in 2013 at the age of 104 (Woah!) But he left a legacy that it is unique to South Florida and its community.I parked my car, went in and sat down. “I’ll have the beef brisket, ma’am – with ice tea” I said. When I tried it was a bit heavy on the pepper seasoning, but overall an excellent choice.Aside from their nostalgic décor, the true star of the restaurant is their slow cooked baby back ribs with that famous sauce only found at Shorty’s. Other items on the menu include the beef spare ribs, chicken, pulled pork sandwiches, brisket, and of course their delicious coleslaw which is always chock full of celery salt which gives it a great tasted and creaminess at the same time. The corn on the cob is sweet, perfectly cooked and drenched in butter – the way it’s meant to be eaten. This was our first time here and our last. As soon as we walked in we had no idea where to go. Some people at the table in front of us had to tell us that we just needed to sit down for service. We sat down and were greeted; we ordered quickly because we knew what we wanted. We waited for our food for a while. Then other tables came in, sat down, and then proceeded to order. We didn't think much of the amount of time that was going by because we were having a nice family time. Then we noticed that the tables that were seated way after us were getting their food when we ordered the same thing. We asked the waiter what was going on, and she proceeded to lie to our faces and tell us that those families ordered on line. WE CLEARLY WATCH THEM ORDER INFRONT OF US!! More time went by and still no food. Finally plate by plate came out after they saw we were getting ready to leave, but by the time we all got our food some of our plates were cold. Then I asked to speake with the manager and I was told she wasn't there then by another waitres i was told she was in the back. SO MANY LIES!! I asked to speak with her but She never came so I had to go by the bar and ask for her. She came out and got in my face saying that she didn't open the restaurant yesterday and that the ladies didn't start working there yesterday. She proceeded to get in my face even more and talk down to me saying that if we order something we had to wait. Basically saying that it was our fault that they couldn't get their act together. She also proceeded to say that it wasn't her job to give face when something went wrong. She is the manager and owner?!?! So what is her job??I understand people have their days and everyone makes mistakes but don't lie straight to my face and make excuse after excuse; just Owen up to it.
Food was horrible, service was even worse. Wait times are ridiculous. DO NOT GO THERE. This place needs new management.

Was excited when this place opened near my home- I'm s big fan of BBQ, but my first visit was a disappointment so I decided to give it another try- no more. The service is good that's why I gave it one star, but the food is just terrible. My husband and son had to spit out the burnt ends they were so gross, my daughters baked potato seemed old and was overcooked (probably by a microwave when it was reheated) The fries and baked beans were bland and the brisket barely resembled brisket. The baby back ribs were alright, but nothing special. Maybe this place will survive because of its location but with Shorty's right down the street I doubt it.

Love this place ! If you love BBQ- this is the place to be, nice atmosphere, and great service. The place may not look family friendly but it is if you eat outdoors.
I've gotten food from "the rib shack" several times, though the customer service has never been good today it was atrocious! The phone number listed 305-681-3536 was disconnected so I couldn't verify the availability of items before I drove down from 441 and 199th street. When I got there I was ignored for several minutes by the staff who were counting the registering. While I don't expect you to stop what you are doing to take my order a "miss give me one minute and I'll be right with you" would have been nice. The items I wanted weren't available on the menu. When I asked the first young lady for a working number after explaining to her that the number for the restaurant was disconnected she told me she didn't even know the number there. I asked could she find me a working number, a request she ignored. I then asked another employee who tersely responded she didn't know she guess they were working on the lines. I told her the message says disconnected...not out of service. She responded with some more rudeness when I realized they could keep their food and I and my $20 could go. I asked them to please cancel my order because I'd rather go home hungry than spend my money where it's not appreciated. I've patronized them several times in the past but probably won't bother anymore. Respect your customers not just their cash!
Unlike the other review, we LOVE this restaurant, even more than Texas De Brazil. The meat is excellent quality, the service is impeccable, great ambiance, quaint restaurant. Do not be fooled by it being in an office complex or by the negative reviews. Brazaviva rocks.
