Hits and missed

Dined there 2 days ago for Father's Day lunch with 3 other couples and our 4 kids. Called ahead for reservations, which they had no problem accommodating for a party of 12. As someone in the party said, ""that should have been the 1st clue"".

Upon our arrival, we were promptly seated against the wall of glass doors looking out at the pool. We asked to be moved as it was just a little shy on space and the waitress said that it wouldn't be a problem and that we could sit more toward the interior. Since the restaurant was maaaaaybe at 20% capacity at that time, this wasn't (or shouldn’t have been) a problem. The only challenge was the (lady whom we presume to be the) hostess stated 3 times ""but I seated them over there"" and the manager politely and as discretely as possibly told her that it's not an issue and that we can sit anywhere. Not sure what she was thinking because it wasn't like a VIP or exclusive area or anything.

The positives include the decor and location. The marlin tacos (an order of 10) and their Cojito were both spot on… very tasty and got rave reviews from everyone at our table. Most of our table was content with the other dishes, although none heaped as much praise as they did with the 2 items mentioned above. Satisfactory dishes included the fish taco entree, mother and child chicken, and vaca frita. The children who got the chicken tenders and fries were also happy and their portions were generous.

Unfortunately, our lasting impression of the place remains that the food came out very slowly and sporadically. Half of our table got our food 1st and we were told the kitchen was very backed up - though it remains a mystery as to why when the place was well below capacity - and the remaining dishes would be ""out in a little bit"". Our server apologized profusely multiple times and quickly blamed the kitchen and that the manager was already on their case about it. The most inexcusable thing was that my cousin’s 5 year old daughter ordered a grilled cheese sandwich (simple enough, right?) and it was the VERY LAST item to be brought out. We were dumbfounded as to how a piece of cheese between 2 slices of bread and grilled in a Panini press could take that long to make! The wait had her (literally) in tears and when the manager came out with the food he stated that he understood what we were feeling as he, too, has children. A sincere apology and offer to comp her order would have been nice but, alas, neither was given.

To cap it all off, one of the adults ordered the salmon which came out very raw in the middle and had to be taken back to the kitchen to be further cooked. Upon bringing it back and about 2 bites in, she realized that it was STILL raw and cold in the middle and she sent it back without eating or reordering. It was not until she stated that she wouldn’t be paying for it that the thought to comp occurred to the manager (or so it seemed). We left shaking our head at the experience and will not be going back. Shame that such a nice spot fell so short in so many ways.

One tip we would give our server is - while the speed of the food being brought out isn’t entirely her fault - throwing the kitchen staff under the bus didn’t really endear her to us. It was as if she was more worried about losing her gratuity, not our satisfaction. We’d also recommend that the manager get a backbone and get his staff in line and also personally address his guests when things like this happen and attempt to identify a way to appease them, even if he can’t remedy the situation and/or shortcomings of his crew.
