        About Search Results

YP - The Real Yellow PagesSM - helps you find the right local businesses to meet your specific needs. Search results are sorted by a combination of factors to give you a set of choices in response to your search criteria. These factors are similar to those you might use to determine which business to select from a local Yellow Pages directory, including proximity to where you are searching, expertise in the specific services or products you need, and comprehensive business information to help evaluate a business's suitability for you. “Preferred” listings, or those with featured website buttons, indicate YP advertisers who directly provide information about their businesses to help consumers make more informed buying decisions. YP advertisers receive higher placement in the default ordering of search results and may appear in sponsored listings on the top, side, or bottom of the search results page.

        Tips & Advice

Can a car get inspected without a registration?

Yes, a car can get inspected without registration – both the registration card and the actual registration itself. If you’ve lost the registration card, but the car is registered, just find the car’s vehicle identification number (VIN Number), and the inspection station ought to be able go into a state database and use the VIN to look it up. If you are not registered, you can get either temporary registration or a “trip permit” that will give you a grace period during which you can drive the car to an inspection station and get inspected and papered.

Can a car be inspected with the check engine light on?

Yes, a car can be inspected with the “Check Engine” light on, but it will fail the inspection.

Things to bring to a car inspection

Bring your current registration, proof of insurance, and the inspection fee to a car inspection. Make sure to find out ahead of time if they take cash, check or charge.

What happens if a car fails inspection?

If a car fails inspection, and it is a state-mandated inspection, the owner will not be able to register the car. The owner will be given a report from the respective inspection station detailing the problems, and a short grace period during which they can continue to drive the car. The owner will need to bring the car in for specific repairs and get it re-inspected within the allotted time in order to get it registered and get license plates for the next year. If a car fails a pre-purchase inspection, it will usually stop the transaction from going through, but that’s up to the buyer.

How long does a car inspection take?

A car inspection, or vehicle inspection, takes perhaps 20 minutes for the safety inspection portion, and 15 minutes for the emissions inspection, but including the paperwork/payment time and wait time, it’s smart to assume 50-60 minutes to fully complete the inspection.

How much does it cost to have a car inspected?

It typically costs $100 to have a car inspected as part of pre-purchase due diligence, but this cost can jump to $150-$200 depending on other variables. A safety inspection, required in order to register one’s car, usually $10-$20. Emissions inspection costs about the same. Expect to pay $35-$40 for safety and emissions inspection on one  vehicle for one or two years.

        What is a car inspection?

Car inspection, also called vehicle inspection, is a state government-mandated safety procedure, where each car is required to undergo specific reviews and tests to ensure that it complies with safety and emissions regulations.  In the government-mandated procedure, inspection is required in order to register a vehicle, but in other cases, inspection is part of the used car resale process.

Do all cars have a diagnostics system?

Yes, most do. All cars and light trucks built in the United States after 1996 are required to be equipped with an on-board diagnostic software system. In an effort to reduce vehicle emissions, the Environmental Protection Agency established new guidelines in emission reduction. While this started in the 1970s, diagnostics rapidly advanced in their capabilities, particularly in maximizing efficiency that resulted in reduced emissions. This efficiency led the EPA to make diagnostic systems mandatory in 1996.

What problems can car diagnostic tools detect?

Diagnostic tools can detect problems in most mechanical areas of your engine, as well as in your transmission, exhaust system (to test carbon output), and your oil and gas tanks.  Diagnostics can also tell you about any engine timing issues, buildup in combustion chambers, coolant temperatures, crank and camshaft positions (as they relate to timing or damage), clogged or faulty fuel injectors, and exhaust output issues.

        What is OBD?

On-board diagnostic system, or OBD, is a software built into all cars after 1996 (and some before). OBD monitors the performance of your car via sensors and ports throughout the car. That data can be analyzed by you, if you have a diagnostic machine at home, or your mechanic. ODB can identify real-time performance issues in your car by taking readings off of the different systems, including engine, transmission, exhaust, and even tire pressure.

Bad experience. My car worked really well even though the radiator was leaking. All year it worked well until I accidentally dropped a plastic bottle cap inside the reservoir which plugged and dried up the water in the radiator. I took my car there during winter. After putting a new radiator - my AC, which had never had problems and which I haven't used due to winter weather, declined. Suddenly there's a hole in the condenser (which must have been damaged during the radiator replacement), I took car back there and they sold me another repair - new condenser with free A/C flush. After that, my car A/C just went downhill. It was hot. I took it back and they made me buy more Freon. Then it still wasn't cold - then they told me get A/C flush - busted - they never did it when they put the new condenser. They told me they will do it free if I had the condenser replaced with them. Then two weeks later - my A/C completely gone. Very strange that my car keeps getting something new wrong with it after each time I visited them. Therefore, I am not going back again before they take all my money for repairs. Beware.

I took my vehicle in for brake problems. They held my car for hours, wouldn't let me take it anywhere, citing my ABS sensor which was on when my car passed inspection. Only after I asked them "so are you legally holding my car?" They said no and lo and behold they found the singular screw that was loose and fixed it after they had my car five hours and now my car is smoking due to a damaged seal.

Rip Offf!! I went on 6/17/16 to have my front right tire fixed plugged. I sit there for about 15 minutes they come and give me my keys so that when I went down the road at the tire light would go off. It did... later that evening I was coming back from Dallas and the light comes back on again. So the next morning I had to put air in the tire. I went in today Saturday 6/18. I explain to them my issue, I told them I wanted to see where they plugged it? Also they never did put the stem chrome cover back on the valve. It's missing... he immediately started saying that they had fixed the back passenger tire told him I wanted to see. They wouldn't show me. I took it to another shop guess what no plugs No where in any of the 4 tires. Charged $7 to air my tire up and never fixed it. Avoid this place scam mechanics

Stay as far away from this place and from Richard O'Dell as possible. They had hired temporary technicians with very little experience and when I brought one of my trucks in they repaired a wheel issue but put the wrong wheel bearings on that ended up ruining the axle. I was charged 1250$ by iron horse over a 5 month period. And then almost 2k to replace an axle. When I called iron horse, Richard in particular... Guess what? They're going out of business and can not help with any of the additional repairs that their shop caused. So I called and made a claim on their insurance, and they don't have coverage for that. By the way Richard never would disclose the name of their insurance company, which is not legal. So I am out over 3k because of poor work done by iron horse and Richard did not even have there dignity to call me back. This is a scam shop. Buyer beware

I used Iron Horse to fix my truck and it was held hostage! When i contacted this company I was under the impression that they would run a diagnostic to tell me what the problems and cost would be. Well I was wrong!! I asked time and time again to please tell me what it was going to cost before any work was performed! Not only did they take it upon themselves to perform the work, they did unnecessary work and charged me $3k. I was told that I had to pay if I wanted to get my truck back. This was the worst experience I have in a very long time! The work was not authorized yet they performed it anyways! Disgraceful!

        Did You Know?

        Finding An Auto Repair Professional

There are more than 700,000 auto service technicians and mechanics in the U.S. Finding the right one to repair a dent in your car door or fix an engine that won't start can be overwhelming, especially when it's an emergency. Review a few important facts about auto repair professionals and what you can do to get the best possible mechanic working on your vehicle's issues for a fair price.

        Looking For Reliability
Unlike home repair services that evaluate a property, meet with homeowners and have time to prepare before their physical work begins, auto repair businesses are often asked to make fixes on the spot. If you come into a garage with a tire issue, the expectation is the mechanic will know how to correct that problem quickly.

That is why reliability is so vital when searching for a trusted auto repair shop. It may take going to several different mechanics before you find one you are truly comfortable with. Pose questions to this professional to find out what approach they will take to repair your car or what alternatives are available. Shopping around also gives you the best opportunity to find the cheapest rate or the fastest service, as some garages may be backed up with other vehicles that need repair first.

A recommended way to locate a trustworthy auto repair professional is to seek out customer reviews. Online sites offer honest opinions from real customers who have used a business. Read through this feedback to learn how a business operates and what you can expect if you were to take your vehicle there. Look for reviews about how quick maintenance was completed and if prices were fair. By learning what other people have said about a garage, you can gain a better idea if it's the right place to go when you have a car problem in need of fixing.

        Understanding When There's An Issue

It can be difficult to know which automotive problems are serious enough to require expert assistance. A ripped seat cushion or broken radio don't involve safety and will not warrant enough of a problem that going into a garage is required. However, setbacks with brakes, lights and other parts that are vital to the safety of your car's driver and passengers, as well as others on the road, necessitate quick fixes. Many modern automobiles will notify drivers of an issue, in the form of a signal on the dashboard or a noise within the vehicle.

In the event of an accident, even if your vehicle does not appear to have any damage on the outside, it is generally recommended that you see a trusted auto repair professional. Internal damage may have occurred, or an important part may have been knocked out of place. Fixing these issues before driving much further can prevent further vehicle breakdowns in the future. In the case of a serious accident, a body shop can assess the problems and determine the best course of action for repairs, as well as evaluate how much they will cost.

Beyond that, regular checkups are recommended. Tires must be rotated, fluids needs to be replaced and the engine must be evaluated. After driving 25,000 miles, most auto dealers suggest having the vehicle checked out to ensure everything is running smoothly. Taking the car into the auto repair professional you trust will protect you from further problems down the road.

        Doing Your Own Auto Repair

Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop. At the same time, be aware of mechanic scams that can impact your experience.

        Preventing Trips To The Professional
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage. By handling these types of tasks on your own, you'll gain a better understanding for how your car operates and save time and money.

Along with understanding how to fix manageable vehicle issues that may arise, taking preventative measures to avoid future problems is a valuable time saver. Many problem-solving best practices are related to the seasons. Your vehicle will be in different conditions in the winter than in the summer, meaning it requires a different type of preparation.

In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures the vehicle will be exposed to, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.

For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check your tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.

        Avoiding Scams
There is a common worry among many people that auto repair professionals take advantage of the general public. Because so many people are unaware of how to fix the problems in their vehicle, they are nervous of being overcharged by mechanics or worried that the improper work is being done.

While the great majority of professionals in the industry are honest, hard-working people, a few bad apples can ruin everything. You should be extra careful when first visiting a mechanic to guarantee that the price you're charged and maintenance the vehicle receives are fair.

Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you are in the shop and your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill.

The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done. That way, you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.

By working closely with an auto repair professional and doing some of the tune-up work on your own, you will be less likely to fall for these scams. At the same time, you'll be able to drive out with a clean and healthy vehicle, thanks to the repairs made by a trained professional.
