General Info

Someone once asked a sculptor how he was able to chisel out eyes and a nose, a face from a slab of marble. His answer was that the face was already inside the marble waiting to be set free. That's exactly what you hear from artisan Gregory Giarikos of Apollo Custom Woodworking. "You must be able to feel the wood to know what it should become," says the artist. When Greg examines aboard of oak, cherry, mahogany, or maybe an exotic wood, he already can see the end table, credenza or entertainment center that he has been commissioned to build. "I work from blueprints if the customer insists, but I mostly imagine the piece as described to me by my customer, I can do a rough drawing, but when you have it in your head and your heart it becomes the art object it was meant to be." Examples of Greg's work include new benches you'll find at the Cleveland Art Museum, the trophy case at Canterbury Country Club, and an 18-foot Greek fishing boat bar. Greg has built teak ceiling beams, Mahogany desk ensembles for corporate giants, stunning bookcase/entertainment center combinations, and a dining room set designed to resemble a harp, complete with musical notes as braces on the table pedestal.  His large projects include the elaborate carved wooden alters at St. Herman's, but he also does beautiful wood carvings, hope chests and pedestals, chairs, end tables and coffee tables.Greg was born in Greece and began his apprenticeship in a furniture factory at the tender age of 12. He came to the U.S. when he was 17, but wasn't able to continue his art until his marriage and his return to Greece. Greek-American wife Angie was fully aware of her husband's gift and his passion for wood and furniture, and knew that together they could build a business. The couple returned to the United States and after a brief stint at a furniture manufacturer, they opened their own shop on Cleveland's west side. In 2010, they relocated from Strongsville to Mentor. Apollo boasts a showroom, a finishing room with exhaust fans, and a massive shop to design, build and create the phenomenal furniture and cabinets for which Greg has become so famous. "The reception of the community has been wonderful." Of course when you've been in business since 1991 and have never been late --not even one day -- on a commission, your customers have a tendency to love you.So if you have an heirloom piece you would like turned into a useable ensemble, or a long-time vision for a dream piece, you might try visiting the Apollo showroom. There you can feel the difference of the pull of one of Greg's drawers, or lean on a shelf that has been doweled instead of nailed. And when you explain your vision to Greg, he'll no doubt set about searching for the wood it already lives in.Gregory services the following counties – Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Greene, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Ottawa, Portage, Sandusky, Stark and Summit plus other areas upon special request.
