First, I am a knitter from the 80's, which were the glory days of kitting. I recently started again after a break of nearly 30 years. The chain stores were a disappointment, so I found Yarniverse about 5 months ago. Owner Brenda stocks the shop with a large, ever-changing assortment of quality yarns. She and her staff are amazingly experienced and quite helpful. The earlier negative reviews don't reflect my shopping experiences at all. There are classes for beginning knitters, but if you are just looking for a new project, the ladies excel at listening to what you like and helping you assemble the materials, as well as any advice you might need to see the project through to completion. Charlotte used to work for Vogue Knitting in NYC and can help you create a design! Where else can you find this level of expertise in Memphis? Admittedly, if you want to sit around and crochet granny squares out of cheap yarn, there are alternatives. But if you want to make something special, visit Yarniverse.
I have been in this place of business twice. After the 1st time I swore I'd never go back. On the first occasion I was totally ignored (she was busy knitting) for several minutes. Finally, she put her knitting down and asked if she could help me. And the attitude and one of voice! . . .
The second time, she was 'busy' practicing on her violin. I was barely acknowledged while she continued with her violin. Finally, she asked if I needed anything. Evidently I did or I wouldn't have been in there in the first place. And again - her very obvious attitude and tone of voice. I did not crawl out from under a rock and did not appreciate being treated as though I had.
I have now discovered Hank of Yarn in Southaven, MS. They are the total opposite of this place and now have ALL my business. Evidently, even in today's economic atmosphere, Yarniverse just doesn't need the business . . . .
Ok I went to go to take a crochet class and they acted like it was an inconvience to them. They didnt have a crochet hook for me to buy, the yarn was extremely high priced and let me tell you Val is very confrontational and speaks to you like your lower class than her and that your a total idiot cause you asked a question. I left the yarn, the book and the class and walked out the door. It is not worth the hassle!!
What the hell is wrong with the yarn shops around here its like they are better than everyone else!!! I thought it was a business and in helping the customer what a crock!!!
