Dental Examination

X-rays
Even though there is very little risk, your pediatric dentists at Brink & White are particularly careful to minimize your child’s exposure to radiation. In fact, dental X-rays represent a far smaller risk than an undetected and untreated dental problem.

Teeth Cleaning
The ADA code defines a dental cleaning, or prophylaxis, as removal of soft plaque, calculus (hardened plaque) and stains from the teeth. Its purpose is to control local irritational factors. A toothbrush has traditionally been used when needed for plaque removal and has been specifically recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry during this time to help limit aerosol production. Scaling to remove the calculus can and will still be done utilizing hand instruments when needed.
Fluoride Treatment
Avoiding unnecessary decay simply requires strict adherence to a dental hygiene regimen: brushing and flossing twice a day, regular dental checkups, diet control and fluoride treatment. Practicing good hygiene avoids unhealthy teeth and costly treatment.
Dental Sealants
6. Regular six–month checkups, a fluoridated water source, good nutrition, and proper home care can reduce cavities tremendously. Sealants can also greatly reduce the chance of getting cavities. Sealants are a paint-like covering placed on the chewing surface of permanent molars.
Space Maintainers
A little ring (or rings, depending on the type of appliance) fits on one (or more) of the back teeth and holds the appliance in place. A unilateral appliance holds space for one side of the mouth, while a bilateral appliance holds space for both sides of the mouth. These appliances can range from simple space maintainers, which hold the space for one tooth, to lingual arches and pediatric partials which can hold space for up to four teeth.

If this process begins very early (five or six years old), then the adult teeth entering the mouth may require a series of further primary teeth extractions, placement of space maintainers, and eventual extraction of four permanent teeth.

Orthodontics
Additional qualifications include PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification, conscious sedation certification (for the use of oral sedation for our apprehensive patients), and completion of the Clinical Modification of Dentofacial Development program (provides him past and yearly training in orthodontics for our patients that need a pediatric approach to their orthodontic needs).
Braces
If a tooth (or teeth) must be removed due to an abscess or crowding, we will place an appliance (see below) to hold that space until the permanent tooth appears or until some type of orthodontic appliances (braces) are placed.
