We ate at Ban Thai recently at the recommendation of some friends that are long-time Memphians. We moved to Memphis from Chicago about 2 years ago and have had a hard time finding moderately priced restaurants with good food and a nice atmosphere. Bhan Thai definitely fits the bill!! There was a wait, even though we called ahead, but the outdoor patio and bar with live music was great and it passed the time easily. The service was a little slow but the restaurant was packed at 7:30p on a Friday night, so it wasn't a surprise. We will definitely eat here again!

The waiter who served us was rude and dissrespectful. We ordered fried rice and curry and when the plates came out there were no utensil. Plus, the portions of the rice was too small, so we ordered another order and asked for several spoons.. In response the waiter told us with an attitude, ""we are very busy so order everything at one time."" I was shocked and enraged. I mean how does he expect to eat curry without a spoon?. Also I have ate at this place several times, so I thought the portion of the rice was enough.. Unbeknowst to me, they have decreased their portion size dramatically, and I mean DRAMATICALLY. Another thing, if you are too busy to serve me and my friends properly then why did you take us? Last thing, the table we were seated at was companied by mosquitos. We were bitten several times by numerous mosquitos. The worst part about that was that we were seated inside the restaurant.! Take my advice and dont go if you want a nice evening.!!!!!

I have eaten at a lot of Thai places. And I do mean a lot, I count them in the dozens. It is far and away my favorite type of food, and I make a point of trying every Thai restaurant that I come across. I will admit that my sample size here is small, as I have only eaten here once, and I didn't even order an appetizer. What I did get though is a Thai standard and one that I have eaten at many restaurants and a good place to start a comparison. That dish of course was Red Curry. The curry was extremely sweet, sweeter than all but a handful of the places I have eaten at, but it melded the sweetness with a heart richness that made it exceptional rather than just sweet. The pork in it was prepared well and the spice level was very accurate and perfectly prepared for how I requested it. The atmosphere and decor is nice, and the fact its in an old house is quaint, but Thai places tend to always be decorated nicely and I would just consider it normal rather than something to hang its hat on. There was one problem though, the service was actually rather terrible and I had to wait for my drink to be refilled more than once. Not really a good thing when you are eating a very spicy dish. This is of course inexcusable for a restaurant of any ilk at all. Overall though the food is very tasty and if you are in midtown give it a try. Its not so much better than other Thai places though that I would drive out of downtown to eat there or if another Thai place was closer. I.E. the one downtown.
It was my first time there and I can't wait to go again. The food was GREAT!!!! It was reasonable depending on what you choose to eat. It's a very quaint and dignified place. I really enjoyed the Thai tea with a shot of rum. It is not offered, but it was my personal choice. Service was friendly and efficient.

This place has the best outdoor patio dining in Memphis! The food is always excellent, the staff is friendly and quick! The owner is always at the restaurant helping out! Definitely need to check it out in the summer when the patio is open. Even on a warm night the patio tends to feel 10 degrees cooler! You must try!
