Veterinary Ophthalmology
Just like people, animals can also suffer from eye complications that affect their day-to-day life. These conditions can include cataracts, glaucoma, uveitis, tumors of the eye, eyelid defects, dry eye, retinal degeneration, and corneal ulcers. Our veterinary ophthalmologist here at Northwoods Animal Hospital’s Eagle River location can provide pets with nearly all of the medical and surgical eye care that is available for humans while making sure they are comfortable and treated with the utmost care and compassion.

Karen started her profession as a licensed veterinary nurse in Colorado in 1998. She studied veterinary medicine at the University of Washington - Madison and moved back to Wisconsin in 2007 with her family, where she joined Northwoods Animal Hospital in 2008. Karen appreciates every part of her career and has a passion for progressive medicine, quality care, client education, and pain management. She also grew to enjoy all aspects of the business while taking on various roles. She loves spending time outdoors year-round, downhill skiing, water sports, wildlife, and doing art in her free time. The majority of her time is spent with her son, teaching him about the world and exploring it through nature!

Arthritis Treatment
Regenerative stem cell therapy is a broad definition for innovative medical therapies that will enable the body to repair, replace, restore and regenerate damaged or diseased tissues. VetStem uses a concentrated form of adult stem cells to treat traumatic and degenerative diseases, including bowed tendons, ligament injuries, osteoarthritis, and osteochondral defects in dogs and cats.
Heart Disease Treatment
We provide a broad spectrum of diagnostic procedures through in-house testing and the use of external laboratories. The facility includes a well-stocked pharmacy, in-hospital surgery suite, in-house X-ray capabilities, ultrasound, ECG, blood pressure monitoring, a closely supervised hospitalization area, and indoor boarding kennels with outdoor walking areas and grooming services.

Wound and Fracture Care
We perform many types of soft tissue surgeries at our clinic. Soft tissue surgeries are those that are not associated with bone. These surgeries can provide many benefits to pets. Examples of soft tissue surgery include growth and lump removals, laceration repair, abscess, wound repair, skin biopsies, and abdominal surgeries.

Ophthalmic Surgery
Dr. Theuerkauf has a particular interest in various eye procedures and ocular surgeries, including cherry eye repair, v-plasy procedure, entropion surgery, and corneal gridding. His years of experience, combined with continually keeping up-to-date on procedures through continuing education, will help keep your pet’s eyes healthy and pain-free!
Veterinary Surgery
Dr. Hayman is a 1989 graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine and joined the practice in 1991. His primary areas of interest are in quality preventative care, orthopedic surgery, and reproductive medicine. Dr. Mike, his wife Wendy, and their two children love the Northwoods. In his free time, he enjoys all Northwoods outdoor activities.
Veterinary Euthanasia
We offer comprehensive pet end-of-life care in addition to cat and dog euthanasia services to best meet the needs of you and your pet. We are there for you every step of the way, ensuring and planning for a peaceful goodbye.

Laboratory Services
Blood work and urinalysis serve multiple purposes, including diagnosing disease and determining the health of your pet. Yearly tests will check your pet’s organ functions and help define the general health of your pet, including potential problems that are often not visible during a physical exam. Obtaining baseline bloodwork and a urine sample when your pet is healthy provides invaluable baseline information that we can compare to whenever your pet is sick in the future. Regular testing also allows for early detection and monitoring for changes, especially as they age.

Whether your pet is just here for a quick bath, nail trim, anal gland expression, or more extensive treatment, such as a medicated bath, de-matting, ear cleaning, or a sanitary clip, our veterinary team will always treat your pet as one of their one. We also offer mild sedation (given at home before the appointment) for those fur-babies that stress easily. We strive to keep your pet as comfortable and relaxed as possible throughout the grooming appointment, and we’ll give you a call as soon as your pet is ready to be picked up.
