Primary Care
Pediatric ophthalmologists are medical and surgical doctors who specialize in the eye problems of children. In particular, vision develops in the brain until about age 9 years and can be adversely affected when the eyes are not straight or do not focus correctly. A child can grow up with good vision if these problems are detected and treated at a young age. All ophthalmologists have some training in children’s eye problems, but the pediatric ophthalmologist has had additional training and practice in examining children and caring for their eyes. If your primary care doctor suggests that your child have his or her eyes checked, a pediatric ophthalmologist will have the greatest knowledge of the possible conditions and the greatest experience in examining children effectively.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide but many people who have the disease don’t even know it. For this reason, its often considered a silent disease like hypertension. Glaucoma can gradually lead to vision loss, beginning in the periphery of one’s eyesight and later involving central vision. Prevention is key.
Ophthalmology
As founder emeritus of Piedmont Eye Center, Remo Lotano, MD has provided medical eye care to Central Virginia for over 30 years and retired in June 2007. His extensive credentials include degrees from the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) and Albany College of Pharmacy, as well as a rotating internship completed at Albany Medical College. Dr. Lotano completed residency training in ophthalmology at McGuires Veterans Hospital at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. His vision for Piedmont Eye Center is still at the heart of our practice to this day.
Macular Degeneration
Robert Vogel, MD, JD joined Piedmont Eye Center in 1994 as Lynchburg’s first full-time retina specialist. He completed his residency at the University of Virginia and received specialty training in the area of retinal and vitreous surgery at the University of Texas in Houston. Dr. Vogel’s expertise includes treating patients with diabetes, macular degeneration, “floaters,” retinal detachments, and other retinal problems using some of the area’s most advanced technology available. Laser Eye Surgery
It would be so much easier to begin this review of my experience with Dr. Gene Moss at Piedmont Eye Surgery with today instead of returning to August 30, 2019 on the date our relationship first began. If I could start today, I would use phrases like “...a true miracle worker!”, “...such a talented, gifted doctor!”, “...Dr. Moss and his staff were exemplary throughout this entire process!”.
Cataracts
We are proudly involved with providing care to patients affected with cataracts on an international scale, and now, Piedmont Eye Center is taking an active role to identify and treat patients in our own community who would otherwise go without surgery. Through a partnership with the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Foundation’s program known as Operation Sight, we are able to provide patients with this amazing surgery without the financial worry for those who qualify.
Cataract Surgery
The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses implanted in the eye of adult patients following cataract surgery. These lenses are designed to allow for clear distance, intermediate, and near vision with the potential to be more independent of the need to use glasses for daily tasks.
Eye Exam
Most medical insurance plans, including Medicare & Medicaid, do not cover fees associated with routine refractions, completing medical forms, reproduction of medical records, cancelled appointments and no-shows. You must pay for these services in full. Refraction is performed to establish a baseline of the patient’s best corrected visual acuity in addition to determining if there is a need for corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses. It is an essential part of an eye examination for monitoring the health of the eye. Most medical insurance plans, including Medicare & Medicaid, do not cover routine refractions and allow that we charge separately for that portion of the examination, since it is not a covered service.

Darin Bowers, MD received his medical training through Marshall University followed by a full Internal Medicine residency through West Virginia University. He then completed his Ophthalmology training at Geisinger Medical Center in Pennsylvania. Dr. Bowers received dual board certification in both Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology and now specializes in advanced laser cataract and Lasik eye surgery. Diabetic Retinopathy
Another cause of new floaters is bleeding inside the eye. This is referred to as a vitreous hemorrhage. Vitreous hemorrhage is the result of abnormal blood vessel formation in the eye and can be seen most commonly in diabetic eye disease. Ultrasound
Piedmont Eye Center is proud to offer the latest technology available to ensure the best possible care each and every visit. Part of our commitment to technology includes the Heidelberg Spectralis OCT, which is part of the latest and most advanced OCT technology available. An OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) machine scans the retina under a similar premise as an ultrasound or MRI, except utilizing reflected light to generate detailed cross sections and 3D rendering of the retina. This device offers your physician the most detailed and accurate information available today. The Heidelberg Spectralis is over 100x faster than technology previously available and acquires up to 40,000 single line scans per second! This increased speed and detail equates to much higher resolution and unrivaled ability to track disease progression and improvements. The Heidelberg OCT also comes equipped with TruTrack Technology, which enables active eye tracking and consistent alignment of images. This allows for a patient to rest comfortably in the machine and blink as they need to without compromising quality of scans and also a drastic reduction in artifact. Lastly, the Spectralis also came equipped with AutoRescan Technology which is responsible for providing precise follow-up scan placement to insure the exact area in question is scanned precisely each and every time. The Heidelberg Spectralis is the only SD-OCT to offer both of these technologies to complement one another to give the best scans and best information, every time!
MRI

General Surgery
Operation Sight charitable surgeries are done by volunteer surgeons at their own facilities and must be worked into their existing surgical schedule. Operation Sight volunteers are donating their surgical services and office visits to you. Some may happen quickly, others may require a wait of several months. Acceptance to the Operation Sight does not guarantee surgery. There is no set timeframe for when an approved applicant will receive surgery. It is dependent on the location of the patient and the availability of a volunteer surgeon.

This procedure is now one of the most common cosmetic procedures in the United States because of its results.
