I love this place! While reading previous reviews, I couldn't believe they were talking about clay cafe. I think everyone there truly enjoys working/painting/creating! I recently wanted to do a project for my husband's birthday using our kids handprints. The girls there were so helpful designing it with me and my husband actually loved it! It's his grill plate now. We made the hands into different ties and it said, "Dad is TIE-riffic!" Too cute! And they also helped keep it trendy with chevron and that Tiffany Blue color that's very in right now. Overall I had a wonderful experience. Those other reviews were written at least a year ago. People change. Places change. This place rocks now! Go try it out! You won't be sorry!!
This was the coolest place I've been to in a really long time. Living in Lubbock, there isn't always a lot to do, and painting pottery at the Clay Cafe was something different. I was surprised to read the other review... We had the best time and the employees were awesome, especially for a couple of first time painters. The owner was there that day also and made a point to come and check on us and even helped us with some painting tips. We have gone back a couple of times since then and have made plans to attend their "Diva Night". I can't believe that that other person had such a horrible time, kind of hard to believe that would happen.

We went to Clay Cafe for my daughter's 10th birthday. She was so excited. Each child in the party picked their piece that they wanted to paint. My sister asked about another piece to paint that was the same price and was rudely told that those were not an option for the party.
We were told at the end of the party that it would be a week and a half to two weeks for our stuff to be ready. Also at the end of the party each guest put a thumbprint on the back of a special birthday plate.
Two weeks later I went by to pick up our pieces and they were not ready and I was told to wait for a call. The staff was not friendly at all. A couple of days later the stuff was ready so I went back to get it. We get home with our stuff and find out the special birthday plate with all the thumbprints is missing. I go back up there and they can't find the plate. I was told they had lots of birthdays on that day and that it probably got mixed up with someone else's party stuff. They told me that they would make her an extra special plate to make up for it...but there was no way I was going to be able to get everyone back up there for the thumbprints because we live out of town. I was wondering why they were not calling all the other people who had parties on that same day as ours to check on the plate. Two weeks later I go back again to pick up the new plate which is still not ready. I ask about them calling the other parties from that day and the girl was like...oh yeah we could do that. I was thinking um yeah that would have been the smart thing to do a couple of weeks ago. When they finally got the new plate done I went to pick it up and asked about the calls to the other parties and the girl just says ""we did not hear anything"" and they gave me the new plate which was supposed to be extra special. It is a plate with a flower and my daughter's name on it....pretty plain. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN!!!!!!!

I used to go to Art Avenue to paint my own pottery, but when I saw that it was no longer there, we decided to go to Clay Cafe near by.
When we walked in no one was there to greet us or ask us if we needed help. We proceeded to pick out our pottery and waited about 5 minutes for someone to help us get the paints. They reluctantly helped us and went back to chatting with co-workers.
After we finished painting we gave our information and left. This place was a little more expensive than Art Avenue, but we paid and left. They said they would call us when it was done.
A few days later we got a call to come pick up our pieces. When we arrived and gave our name, they spent 15 minutes searching for our pieces. Finally they gave us one of our pieces and said they had messed up the other and had to re do it in the kiln. They again said they would call us when it was done.
We never got a call back. We returned a few weeks later to see what the problem was. They said they had thrown our other piece away because we did not come pick it up in time. I understand they throw the pieces away after a 30 day period or however long to not have everything sitting around, but when YOUR business messes up a piece WE paid for, and does not call like promised it is not ok. They were rude when we explained the problem and did not receive a refund. I will never return here or recommend this place. Terrible service. Go to Mud Room on 82nd if you want a good experience with painting your own pottery!
