Great food. We've tried other restaurant in the area but this is the place to go to especially for dim sum. There is always a long line for take out. The place is not very appetizing but once you taste the food, you forget about the surroundings. Different people come here not only Asians. Parking is limited. They take credit card for purchases over $10.00. The restaurant opens early and closes late.
the deep-fried bean curd is unique--thick, golden, crunchy batter that sticks well on above-averaged-sized pieces of bean curd. i give the bean curd on a good day here 5 starts (there are days where they're good, but not great).
the other regular entrees i've been getting over the years are the deep-fried chow mein hong kong-sytle, roast duck, walnut mayonnaise shrimp, and sweet & sour pork. i give these 3.5-4.5 stars.
over the many years i've been going to won kok, the food quality has been consistent.
NOTE: this is a chinese restaurant that cops, filipinos, and hispanics almost exclusively seem to fancy; i rarely see chinese people here, other than any chinese friends with me and the staff.

A friend recommended this place to check out and he will no longer be allowed to recommend anything any longer because this place is a disaster. I felt I was transported to the 70s and not in a good way. The whole place looked dingy and the chairs and tables looks like they were about to fall apart at any moment. The floors....OMG... don't get me wrong, I don't expect the floors to look pristine but I also don't expect it to look like it hasn't been mopped in 6 years either. The food is almost ok but the noodles we ordered came to us COLD. Like it's been sitting there for 15 min. Must have been another table's order but they cancelled last min. and they were just waiting for someone else to order the same thing. It was my 1st time coming here and will be the last. The only reason I'd come back here again is if every restaurant in Chinatown closes down expect for this one.

On recommendation of Dwayne Thorin at The Coffee Gallery in Altadena, we tried it. We'll be back well before next Christmas!
A short block-and-a-half waddle from the Chinatown Gold Line station South on Spring to Alpine and across. Even easy returning, via the elevator, with some bao-to-go for the sick one at home.
Honey Walnut Shrimp (didn't find it on the huge menu) to die for, fairly ordinary pork chow mein with fine noodles, and the yummy duck congee, a pot of good oolong tea; $25 for 3; that's hard to beat.
Yes, it's a funky joint, but we didn't come for fancy decor. Pretty outsides bring tourists; a great kitchen brings back the locals as regulars.

I actually signed up to CitySearch just to leave a review of this place. Due to a series of unfortunate events, I ended up eating here at Christmas (don't ask) and I still feel sick just remembering the experience. The place was bumping, but we really wanted to eat Chinese food and someone (a pox on her and her entire family!) had once recommended this place. We had no problem with the wait, as it's usually a good sign, and we were eventually seated in the main room, which was filled to capacity. When our food arrived, we were ravenous and dug in straight away. Unfortunately, my wife and I were unable to finish any of the dishes we ordered (and we ordered a lot because we were hungry), as the food was just...horrible. I literally felt sick to my stomach and had to order some beer to get rid of the taste. We left most of the food on the table and I haven't been back to Chinatown since, even though I live just down the road. I'm so disappointed with C-town. The only decent place is Yang Chow, but it's too busy most of the time. The Plum Tree Inn is a poor second. But, Won Kok truly deserves its name. I still gag when I drive past it and will probably remember it when I'm old and senile.

Talk about a hole in the wall! I had my doubts and was very worried the first time I went. Since then we have been going at least once a week. I introduced a friend and I kid you not, he went days in a row the next few weeks. You can eat like a king for what seems like pennies. Plus, they serve some dim sum items all day, unlike other places. It's like Yang Chow but at Won Kok the portions are twice as big, the wait is half as long and you want more when you are done. You see everything from Detectives, Traffic Control, Police Officers, Nurses, and even Mariachi come each here. It's the best! And it's open until 3 a.m.!

Chinese Food done old school. Won Kok is one of those restaurants that brings you back in time. The dragons spiraling over post and the red coat wait staff bring me back to the China town of my youth. But not only is the decor old school so is the food. From greasy pan fried noodles that slide down your throat with the greatest of ease to the pork chop with special xoxo sauce that brings you to your knees. Yup I'm a fan and I'm so happy places like this still exist in LA.

I was introduced to Won Kok by my girlfried last year. Because of the dim atmosphere and location of the restaurant, I was a bit reluctant to go. I am definitely glad I went. Since my visit I have made this my prime chinese eatery when Im in the downtown area. The food here is excellent. They have a wide variety of dishes. The prices are incredible cheap and the service is fantastic. If you are not comfortable eating in, get take out. You could order about five different entrees (including shrimp) for roughly $45.
