If you really want to know my experience reminded me of the Steinfield episode - ""Soup Nazi"".
What's up with a shop that does all kinds of custom cakes but can't make minor change to one of their standard cakes with 48 hours notice?
I waited while the ""custom cake lady"" chatted on the phone. Meanwhile I looked through the whole book of adult cakes, yes many, but not so special sheet cakes with stenciled designs. This was not quite what I had in mind. I had already eyed their ""off the shelf"" cakes.
My boyfriend is having a birthday and I wanted to get something special that reminded him of home. Their Old-Fashioned 6-layer Chocolate Cake looked like just the ticket, I just wanted a small change, the icing.
Instead of 100% all dark chocolate icing, I asked for white icing outside. On the inside -- alternate white and dark chocolate filling -- which would remind him of Mom.
But no, no, neither was possible.... She wouldn't ask baker -- says they knows the cook has a fixed recipe and measurements -- absolutely positive -- wouldn't even ask.
When she tried to sell me a marble cake, I did look, but it was very messy inside. My vision was a tuxedo look, alternating dark chocolate and vanilla stripes of icing between the six layers. The marble in comparison would look like an unmade bed.
The impression I got was that the baker is inflexible and the staff is less inclined to be responsive to what you want and more about what fits their routine.
Seems that they are happy to sell you a cupcake, but unable to accommodate reasonable request for custom cake. I walked away with nothing not even a user friendly attitude.
Kinda makes you wish for home and Mom....

I used to work up the street from Susie Cakes, and I quickly became almost a daily regular to the store. $3 never seemed like much...but when you're buying EVERY DAY, it gets as bad as a Starbuck habit!
I think the taste of these cupcakes are phenomenal. I highly recommend the red velvet (the best they have), and their monthly flavors are always good too (favorites are the pumpkin and pineapple upside-down cakes).
$3 is a little much to ask for, as these cupcakes are not as large as what you'd get at either Sprinkles or Yummy Cupcakes...but they are BETTER TASTING by far.
Moving away from Los Angeles in about a month...Susie Cakes is one of the things I will miss most.

I have celebrated several occasions with Susie Cake Cupcakes and Cakes. I have to say they are the best in town and far better than Sprinkles. However it is a hard decision during birthdays to choose the cream filled cupcakes or the cakes, not to mention that the staff is very accommodating and helpful.

I've heard great things about Susie Cakes cupcakes which I have yet to try so don't use my review for their cupcakes. But if you're from New England and felt that a huge draw of theirs was the whoopie pies then don't bother. They make the outer pie/cookie part wwwaaayy too thick and dense and heavy, almost like a super thick chocolate cookie as opposed to a lighter fluffy cake. And the cream in the middle tastes too much like shortening. Do yourself a favor at the price they charge per whoopie pie($5) order some online from a New England business. You'll be glad you did.

Each cupcake ($3) was filled with frosting and ranged from Mint Chocolate, Mocha, Lemon, Marshmallow, Strawberry, Vanilla, Chocolate, Red Velvet and Peanut butter.
The Red Velvet was moist and the Strawberry cupcake, which tasted like strawberry shortcake was another favorite. I also liked their traditional vanilla cake with a blue butter cream frosting. These cakes aren't as dry Sprinkles and there is seating too

I LOVE susie cakes! All the people that work there are always very friendly and helpful and when I ordered a cake for a birthday, they called a few days later to ensure we liked it. Their red velvet cake is phenomenal and my guests absolutely loved it. I also had one of their pumpkin cupcakes which was amazing. It is a cute bakery too, I just wish they were open later so I could go by for dessert after dinner.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good the cupcakes were at SusieCakes. I've never really cared for cupcakes and I don't like Sprinkles at all, but my boss treated me with some cupcakes from SC and I've been obsessed ever since! The cakes are so moist and the frosting is very creamy (and I love the surprise center filling!) My favorites are the red velvet, strawberry, and coconut. I haven't really tried any of the others because these ones are too tempting everytime I go in! I've also had the carrot cake and I highly recommend it! The cheesecakes were not my favorite, but the cakes are great!

I'm not a cupcake connoisseur so when I decided to get cupcakes for my mom's 60th birthday party, I knew I needed some help figuring out where to go. I did a ton of research and asked my friends for their opinions on the best place to get cupcakes. Based on what I heard, I decided that Sprinkles, although good, was not worth the hassle of fighting traffic and waiting in long lines. Yummy's was vetoed after hearing too many complaints about dry cake. No one had actually tried anything from Vanilla so I decided against using my mom's birthday as a test-taste. The only bakery that fit all my criteria was SusieCakes and a friend raved about their red velvet cake so I decided to give them a try.
I ordered one dozen lemon and one dozen mocha, although I was tempted to order a dozen of everything since all of the cupcakes looked delicious. The lemon cupcakes were great. The cake itself was moist and full of lemon flavor, and the cream cheese frosting was sugary and sweet. I was concerned that the frosting in the middle would overpower the cake and people would end up with 90% frosting to 10% cake, but that wasn't the case at all. It was the perfect amount to add a little extra something. It was definitely sweet, but I have a sweet-tooth so I loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes lemon cakes. I didn't try the mocha but I did get a taste of the frosting and it was good, although very rich.
Overall, the cupcakes were a bit pricey at $3 each, but SusieCakes had wonderful customer service and all of my guests were delighted with the yummy treats so I'll be using from now on when I have a special ocassion to celebrate!

As a long time cupcake lover, i have frequented a lot of bake shops in LA, including sprinkles, vanilla, and many others. I heard about susiecakes through a friend, and decided to give it a try. the first time I went in to the shop everything looked lovely; the people were nice and the place looked like a cute little shop. the cupcakes were not the best that ive ever had, but they weren't bad either. the second time i went, it was a horrible experience. I ordered 7 cupcakes and the salesperson pressured me into buying two more cupcakes because she said that the cupcakes wouldn't fit into the box. they kept on trying to hurry me up as i was trying to decide what to get, and looked really impatient. as i was browsing i also saw little flies in the cupcakes case, and when it landed on a cupcake and crawled around on the icing, the girl didn't even exchange the cupcake! i asked them about the flies the girl said that flies just come in since it was summer. which was no comfort. when i got my order and came home, i saw that they had messed up my order and totally gave me the wrong cupcakes! i'm never going back to susiecakes again..

I can?t say enough good things about this place. Their red velvet cake as well as their confetti cake are perfections- deliciously moist with not-too-sweet frosting. My friend ordered a cake from here for a friend?s baby shower, and they accidentally dropped it only the way out. They not only made her another cake immediately, but they called her a day later to check up on everything. Now, that?s what I call friendly service! Also, the store is adorable, and there are always cute kids in their with frosting and pudding all over their faces, straight from a Betty Crocker ad.

How great to have a real bakery which appeals to grownups and kids, alike. I have sampled nearly everything which SusieCakes makes and have loved every single thing (some more than others). The 6 layer chocolate cake is the best chocolate cake I have ever tasted. Not too sweet, very chocolaty and the frosting is ethereal. I know that Red Velvet cake is very fashionable these days and no-one makes a better one than SusieCakes. If I just want a little bit, I buy a cupcake. When I want to share a big slice (& yes, the cakes by the slice are big enough for two), I buy a slice of the Red Velvet. Yummy.
The chocolate wafer ice box cake is to die for. They will even decorate it for you. Cake decorations are pretty & original. Try SusieCakes...you will love it--guaranteed!!!! This sweet little bakery has generated considerable buzz in W L.A. & for good reason...it's a clear winner. Love everything about SusieCakes, including the nice folks behind the counter & the good parking in back. Oh, did I mention that they also have the best brownies in town, as well as the all-time best chocolate chip cookies. Carrot cake is unlike any other; divine.
Edited to add:. This place has really caught fire. If looking for a slice of Red Velvet on a Saturday afternoon, get there early. Red Velvet mania has taken Brentwood by storm. I had to settle for a cupcake this afternoon, even though I was lusting for full slice of Red Velvet. Happy for SusieCakes. Nice to see a good person with great products becoming such a well-deserved success.

Ok, the critical reviews have got to be from the owners of sprinkles. SusieCakes is nothing but fantastic. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE that I have introduced to this place LOVES it. I'm a recent transplant from nyc, wher my standby was Magnolia Bakery. Yes, Magnolia, the standard by which all cupcakes are measured. My wife and I were concerned that we'd never find a cupcake on par here in la. So, we tried sprinkles, we liked it. Good cupcakes. We were happy enough. But then, a miracle happened. I was too lazy to drive all the way to beverly hills from santa monica for cupcakes for my sons birthday, so I tried SusieCakes because they were closer. Rejoice and sing! The best I have EVER tasted. Listen carefully, they are BETTER than the Magnolia Bakery. And Sprinkles, well, please. Yes, we're snooty toots, but we know our cupcakes. These cupcakes are light and fluffy, literally melt in your mouth, with a drop of frosting in the center. The frosting is buttery, and not too sweet. Again, the best I've ever had. Tempted to request a jar of it and grap a spoon. Well, my son caught a bad cold just in time for his birthday, so we postponed his party. So, I ate all of the cupcakes. 2 dozen. And you know what, I don't care! I'd eat another two dozen tomorrow. When my son recovered, I ordered more cupcakes for his pre-school, and yes, everyone there, parents, teachers, immediately saw the light and converted to Susie. Then for his actual party, we ordered a plain vanilla sheetcake. Delicious. Best cake I have EVER tasted. It was large so I took about half of it to work the next day. Again, immediate converts. One experienced eating co-worker replied, ""That's the best cake I've ever tasted."" Finally, when you walk into the place, it's really cute, and the girls that work there are very friendly. That includes Susie herself. So please, try this place if you appreciate a perfect cupcake or cake. From beverly hills to nyc, it has no rival.

susie cakes is a bit pricey, which living in brentwood you get used to. but this bakery makes too sweet or no flavor creations. i have tried several things from there, always hoping maybe the last thing i tasted wasn't there best. the cupcakes are worse than box mix, esp for the $3 price tag. the oreo and strawberry cakes are sugary sweet and nauseating. the oreo cake tasted processed. no one finished their slice. really disappointing as we were so excited when a bakery opened in brentwood. looks like we'll still be driving to west hollywood for our goodies
