Where to begin. In short: never look to this place if you are considering having your animal in their care for boarding. Their judgement and medical practices are deeply concerning, not to mention their failure to communicate with pet owners over evolving medical conditions that would be alarming to anyone with a pulse and a set of eyes.

First of all, we really wanted our experience to go positively when we came here to board our diabetic cat. We followed all of their instructions to bring her in for a check-up a week before and had her vaccinated to be safe. Our cat is not an easy one to deal with and we know that, so that's why we decided to pick a VET HOSPITAL to watch her in the event that anything go wrong with her diabetic care...they would surely be the ones to know how to handle it and keep her safe. We couldn't be more wrong.

Over the weekend I checked in to see how our pet was doing and the receptionist let us know that she was grumpy (we expected as much) so we asked if it was serious enough that we needed to come back home, she said, "No, it's just a couple days". We didn't hear from them again because they are closed on Sundays (already a bad setup for animals who need more care than others, because you cannot get to them) and on Monday when we got back into town we were told that we couldn't pick her up that evening because they were closed. Again, bad sign. If you can't pick up your animal when you are IN TOWN they don't understand boarding special needs animals. When I finally got the chance to pick up our pet on Tuesday morning, it was a nightmare to behold. Our cat was unrecognizable; with an upper respiratory infection, blood under it's chin and paws, a bruised ear, discharge on her eyes and due to fear and stress had began urinating on herself. Next was the kicker: a vet tech came out to let me know that she wasn't eating for a day and hadn't been given her insulin in the last 24 hours. Word to the wise: this is mayday when it comes to diabetic cats. Instead, the staff was totally casual and insisted that she just needed a bath and that she would probably eat at home. I asked if a vet had seen her and how terrible she looked and they gave a vague answer that they would have to check (seriously??). Our cat looked like she had been living on the streets for years, and was so far from the healthy cat we dropped off a few days earlier.

After about an hour of her being at home and looking like she was on death's door, she had to be rushed to the emergency vet because diabetics who don't eat are an urgent situation...not a, "Oh, let's just skip some doses, maybe give them a bath and not tell the owners" situation. In the end, our pet was in intensive care for 3 days and was close to being put to sleep. I never thought we would have to deal with this situation when boarding her at a vet facility, and in fact, our 24hr emergency vet couldn't believe she was being watched by vets. I called and spoke to the managing vet (I was too angry to listen to his name to be honest) and when I told him the laundry list of medical problems our cat had he chalked up to, "stress". In fact, he basically said our cat did it to herself because she's an angry cat. He also said they "lost her" at one point when she jumped out of a cage presumably trying to escape their care. Not only was their initial care terrible- but their understanding of problems arising within an animal is self-serving at best. You could tell he was trying to cover any responsibility...such as not giving her insulin and not calling us at any time to warn us of what was happening. That was their choice and it was a life-threatening one.

We've worked with a lot of facilities across the years, but this was alarming and I'm usually not the type of person to write a bad review but I am honestly concerned for other pet owners out there who visit this practice. We are very fortunate to have saved our cat in time, but please go elsewhere and tell others the same.

Something that comes to mind when writing reviews is thinking about how we treat others in the world and in the case of this review how we treat our pets also. The Dr.s and the staff at the front desk plus the technicians at LFSAH have all been kind, caring , considerate and extremely skilled.
Mind you the Gals at the front desk are also professionals some with degrees in science, some parents etc...They have all been wonderful and helpful, put yourself in their place, some days are crazy some days were grouchy...try asking them how their day is going or what their pets names are , instead of the selfish entitled attitudes people carry now a days !!!
My cat is 24 years old and has been a patient there for 12 years. She is currently under the care of both the young Dr. C and Dr. H . Ive taken good care of my cat, they see this and without question have provided me with thee best service. Also how can we talk and complain about money when were dealing with another's quality of life ? This is not about bargain shopping. They have also given us excellent references for specialists. Once again everyone at LFSMH is amazing and if you have problems refer to the first sentence in my review again !!!

I don't know how things were previous to my two years here - but I have had two sick babies and this vet hospital has been nothing but professional, deeply caring and reasonable with my charges. I have compared pricing with a few big ticket items with a few local hospitals and it seems that they all are within 5% of each other. I can't imagine charges vary so much from hospital to hospital. I know I can trust them with my dog and my kitty.

THIS PLACE SHOUDL BE SHUT DOWN!

A tech named Gabriella just dragged my puppy across the floor right in front of me. I had to ask her to please stop and explained my pup was probably a little afraid because she shoved her fist in his face, made no attempt to connect with him and was totally cold. She still continued to drag him along the floor until I asked her to please pick him up.
This place has NO record of my husband or me bringing our puppy there. There are seven charges on our credit cards, yet the hospital has no record of any of those visits. Something strange is happening there.
They make you wait for 45 minutes to an hour inside a small, very hot room before you are seen.
I have given them my signed insurance claim forms and they have lost them, twice. They have not filed any claims since December 2011. They say they have now changed their policy and will not submit claims any longer because people were complaining (I cannot imagine why).
One receptionist weighed our puppy FIVE times and came up with the wrong weight each time, insisting our dog lost four pounds in four days!!! She gave me attitude and told me she was deeply concerned until the vet weighed him and he actually GAINED half a pound.
I tried to pay cash for our visit today and they didn't have change. I asked them to please download another claim form so I can sign it and they can submit it and their Internet was down.
The two doctors I saw were arrogant and nothing special anyway. There is certainly no love for animals at the Los Feliz Small Animal Hospital.

Good - But Pricey!

The three stars in my review is for their prices, which are some of the highest I've ever paid for comparable work at other vets. I do believe they could be more competitive in that way, especially given wait times, etc.



That said, my experiences with the doctors have been very good. Dr. Costin was great with our cat, who is quite difficult, and helped us clear up an eye problem quickly and accurately. When he had another flareup, Dr. Costin was out of town and Dr. Fuller called us. She was incredibly helpful, and even asked us to call her back and let her know how the cat was doing later, even if we didn't need her.

I'm really surprised by the low reviews. Last spring, my landlord's (who lives on the premises) older cat was attacked by 3 coyotes while she was out of town. We didn't find him until the sun came up, he had been under a car wounded for over an hour. After getting him out and wrapped up, I took him to LFSAH because it was the closest vet I could bring to mind since I was new to the area. I won't go into the gory details of how bad the cat's injuries looked, but I was heartbroken and convinced as we drove him to the vet that we were probably taking him to be euthanized, he looked so bad it really looked untreatable.

They began treating him immediately when we arrived. They gave the most informative diagnosis, were very thorough in explaining exactly what his injuries and prognosis were (several broken ribs, bruised lungs, throat, multiple bite wounds). The vet was the most knowledgeable I've ever seen and she and the staff were very compassionate and concerned. Everyone there was pulling for him and the vet was determined to save his life. The cat made an amazing recovery and was stable and recuperating after a couple days.

After the cat was back to normal, my landlord joked about how I unwittingly took him to ""the most expensive place in the city."" The total bill for the cat was around $1600, but he was nearly dead when he came in so in the course of treatment had an MRI, surgery, oxygen treatment, and painkiller IVs. That's some serious care, if you had to pay for that kind of treatment for a human it would be a fortune. I'm not certain I would use them for vaccinations or spay/neutering, but if my dogs or cats were ever in a position where I knew I needed a vet to save their life, I wouldn't hesitate to bring them here.

Dr. Costin does rock! I've had appt.s with the other doctors there, but now I only see him because he is caring and very knowledgeable. In fact, last year my kitty was diaganosed with cancer when I brought him for a regular check-up. I was very upset, and Dr. C was extremely compassionate and made that process as good as it could be.

Also, the staff has always been nice to me....

I have been going to the Los Feliz Small Animal Hospital for 17 years first with my cat and now with my new puppy. I have always found the front desk staff to be very helpful and professional. I have seen several different vets there over the years and have always been happy with the care with which they have treated my pets. I would highly recommend them to every pet owner.‎

We took our cat in due to swelling in the rear legs. Dr. Matt Costin of the Los Feliz Small Animal Hospital indicated that he was unable to find any reason for the swelling. He literally said he had `no idea what the problem could be.` He advised us to go home and see if the swelling would go down. It did not. After a month, and an increase in the swelling to include the other rear leg we returned to his office and saw another doctor who referred back to xrays which had been taken during the previous visit with Dr. Costin. The second Dr. pointed out a sub lumbar mass that was not only visibly clear but explicitly noted in Dr. Costin's notes from the previous appointment a month earlier. During the first appointment Dr. Costin made no mention of the mass though he clearly knew of it. In the file which we later obtained he specifically elaborated that there was a sub lumbar mass, though again; at the time he very specifically told us that he had no idea what the problem could be. As it turns out this mass was a fatal form of lymphatic cancer that if treated at the time of our original appointment with Dr. Costin might have been successfully eradicated. Being that it is an aggressive form of cancer, the month that we were misled into waiting was a death sentence to our cat. At the very least this is willful misrepresentation of a serious condition affecting a pet which we have had for 15 years and which we consider a member of our family. In consulting with other vets in an attempt to treat our pet they were shocked and disgusted that Dr. Costin did not alert us to the existence of the mass which has resulted in the untimely death of our cat.

Could someone please tell me where Liz Paulosky went? I know she does occasional days at Eagle Rock but I can't remember the other location. I am very sad LFSAM let her go. It's been rough getting the treatment I was used to since she has left.

Going downhill quickly

This used to be such a good place. My pets (many) and I worshipped Dr. Liz Paulosky, who was over the last few months cut to two days a week, then one, then canned. Every day it's someone new -- doctors, receptionists, assistants. No one lasts very long, it seems -- and it sure would be fun to find out WHY. It's hard when several doctors try to interpret another's suggestions and treatments and aren't familiar with a pet's long history. As I said, it used to be great place. Now it's staffed by miserable people who, I have a FEELING, are pushed by the owners to pile up the largest bills possible for its clients to have to fork out. I, too, have been encouraged to transfer a pet to Eagle Rock Emergency for overnight care -- and guess who ALSO owns that place???

Receptionist NI*** is the worst

As soon as you walk in its bad!!! You get the feeling that you are just morew $$$ walking customer service at all. This 1 receptionist name starting with an N should be more like B**** is very MEAN and disrespectful. I think she treats the staff REALLY BAD. OK DR JUST CAN""T GET PAST in the door no THE FRONT DESK . Go to Gateway at least there nice and friendly.

They're Good Vets

I wanted to write a review of Los Feliz Animal Hospital because I've had good experiences with them. I found them to be caring, knowledgeable, and very helpful. Their prices seem to be in line with other vets in the area, and they were very gentle with my cat. If you live in the area, I recommend them. After reading the negative comments, I feel that those were isolated incidents and a not a reflection of the over-all high level of care this vet provides.

I definetly do not recommend this place it is the worst hospital ever with the exception of Dr Cheng she is the only Vet that cares. As far as the pricing it is extremely overpriced the owner has no medical background and the receptionist is a total re****,she acts like she cares but if you look closely you can see otherwise also they are part owners of eagle rock emergency and will hold your pet for hours just to send you to EREH to gouge you more they even had me go to EREH for X_rays because thier machine was not working and i was still charged a visit for going to EREH (2 visits for 1 pet in the same day!!!!)

I have been bringing my cat to LFSAH for years. I even stayed with them after I moved across town. My kitty is very special needs and they have gone to great lengths to keep him alive. Additionally, my vet often gives me suggestions to help lower costs.

Informative Diagnosis; Professional, Friendly Staff

My only complaint is that a bunch of tests and xrays were recommended right away, when I thought a few more home remedies / changes in diet could have been tried first. All of the employees were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. And, all of the customers picking up their pets seemed happy and satisfied.

In March, our cat was run over. When I brought in Edward, in my arms, bleeding from the mouth and panting, the receptionist took her time in getting the attention of a vet and finally told me she would bring me updates from the back. I can't honestly tell whether she was uncaring or just incompetent, but a good 15 minutes passed where she sat at her desk, doing nothing important, wherein I repeatedly asked her to find out what was happenning. When she finally did, she came back, told me it didn't look good, and that our cat was on oxygen. Before finishing her sentence, the phone rang and she took the call. She chatted for a good minute or so while I was trying to get her attention. I finally went in back to find out what was going on. They told me his heart rate was virtually nonexistant and that we should put him down immediately. I convinced them to take another reading with a different machine, where his heart rate was fine. It came out that the first machine was broken. After a brief apology, he appeared to be getting better. He started going downhill later in the afternoon after they insisted that I go home and that he was fine. He wasn't. It was determined he had to go to the Animal Surgical and Emergerency Center all the way across town, and fast. It was 3p and just driving there was going to take some time due to afternoon traffic. In my haste to take Edward to get the care he needed that morning, I threw on a sweatshirt and Ugg Boots, but had forgotten my wallet. I live in the neigborhood. They were our Vet. They still would not let Edward out of their care until I paid right then and there. With the clock ticking, I called my brother and had him bring my wallet by (luckily in my haste to get our boy the care he needed, I didn't lock our front door). When my wallet finally arrived, the receptionist took her time ringing it up. Over $800, not that I care. Edward was euthanized at ASEC at 5p. I will never NEVER patronize LosFelizSmallAnimalHosp again.

The Worst

I have a new kitten and, even though I'd just changed his food which, upon further research can cause stomach upset, they convinced me he needed xrays and the bill came to approximately $375. This has happened with a previous older cat as well. In addition, I just phoned them regarding a neuter and they quoted $350 - $500 for the procedure! How is that being an advocate for animals? (I've now made an appointment at another Animal Hospital which charges under $100). In addition, with the same feline, following a vaccine that seemed to make him ill, we took him after hours to Eagle Rock Emergency (which, according to a plaque in the waiting room of Los Feliz Animal Hospital, is partly owned by one of the vets at LFAH) and witnessed one of the vet technicians sling a cat crate (with the animal inside) across the floor to the owner after the owner accused the emergency facility of charging her too much for the emergency procedure. Repeat: The cat was inside the crate. While it's every person's responsibility to pay for their animal's medical expenses. this behavior is unacceptable. Time to move on.
