Someone recommended this place several years ago when I worked within walking distance of this yummy place! So glad they did! Even though I no longer work in that area & live approx an hour plus away I still make sure to get down there at least once a month! I have yet to have something I don't like, and I'm a picky eater! The gelato is out of this world!!
Such fantastic food!!!!! The cheese ravioli is incredible, and we loved the meatballs, too - they are the size of a fist! The bread that comes with dinner is some of the best we have ever had at a meal. Everything is great - highly recommended. Our server was very accommodating.

I love this place! My roommates in college introduced me to this place 10 years ago. They had spent the summer in Italy and swore up and down it was the best gelato in LA. 10 years later, I'm still on the Westside...and I still love Al Gelato. I always spend a long time in front of the case trying to decide. Today, the pumpkin gelato was my pick. They only have it during the fall and its basically pumpkin pie on a cone (or in a cup). Light, creamy, speckled with pumpkin pie spices...it basically made my Saturday afternoon. My boyfriend had the coffee crunch...and basically polished it off before we made it back across the street to the car. LOVE IT!

I stopped in to kill some time and ordered the lentil soup. I got a small and the portion was HUGE and the soup was fantastic. The employees were kind and helpful (I'm new in town) and the coconut gelato is really good- there are toasted coconut bits in it!
I will be back for sure, I'm dying to check out other flavors of gelato!

Being from Italy, my expectation towards quality Gelato are high. It was impossible for me to find truly good gelato in LA until a friend recommended ""Al Gelato"".
The owner who obviously takes great pride in his work, delivers consistently wonderful flavors and textures.
This is how Gelato is supposed to taste!

This place has simply the best Italian food that I've ever had. The quality is exceptional and you feel like you're having home made dishes and desserts. The portions are so big that you can feed a couple of people easily! I highly recommend this place to anyone who has a passion for Italian food.
And don't forget to try the one of a kind gelatos!

we live close by and get gelato here all the time... sooooo yummy. so we decided to sit in for dinner one night and ordered up some of the best sounding and worst tasting pizza ive ever had. the crust tasted like smoke. the sauce was just... sour. i couldnt finish. the moral of the story is, have dinner somewhere else and come here for desert.

As a patron of Al Gelato for 10 years now, most recently I was dissapointed with a drop in integrity. When requesting more bread, I was informed there will be an extra charge. Sorry, that is nonsense. A staple of italian dining is the bread to sop sauce. I have never been in an italian restaurant that charged me for bread. Very sad about that Al. Snap out of it. If I am going to spend 40 some-odd dollars for dinner with a guest, do not charge for the bread. Shame on you to take advantage in these tight times.

I found this place because a friend swore by it.
The food is reasonable, delicious, and the staff are great.
Make sure you bring cash - only form of payment accepted.
And know up front it's not a flashy restaurant - very casual - but the food is seriously the best Italian I've had outside of Italy.

I see alot of reviews all talking up the fantastic gelato served there. While I feel the enthusiasm is well warranted, the reviewers have neglected something special. The SAUCE! Their pasta marinara is some of the best I've had. Its truely addicting and recommend everyone to go try it.

Generous portions, quaint decor, tasty pastas, salads and deserts and all served with friendly smiles. A welcome if you want to get away from the crowded and hectic pace of upper Robertson Blvd. Informal attire and a great family place to dine.
Pros: Generous portions, tasty food, casual dress, friendly staff. Warm, quaint decor.
Cons: Limited parking during weekdays and payment by cash only.

I paid aloto for the gelato. It was good. I had the 2 selections.
But I do have a grevience.....asked if I wanted it to take out or sit outdoors at the table....I said
well...I'll sit, thank you. Then since you are staying...we offer you a SAMPLE 3rd selection, but they
did not say it would cost me more.
I don't like paying for something that I see as a posted price and get a check for another price. I like to know up front what I am paying for ....and have the ability to change my mind if I don't agree. If there is
a posted price....there should be a price for take out and a price for eating in.

Al Gelato has played a very important part in my life, but we'll save that for another day. What we will talk about today is the fact that Al Gelato not only serves the best, freshest, creamiest gelato in the United States , it also serves some of the best authentic Italian food on earth.
Claire, the original owner/chef from the original Al Gelato in Chicago's burbs, oversees the kitchen, bakes the best homemade thick bread, pickles their own olives/gardenia, makes their own sausage and meatballs, should I go on?
No, it's not fancy..that's the point. It's simply delicious. I've run into everyone from Rickie Lee Jones to Tom Hanks to Bruce Willis here. Yes, it's that great. Do yourself a favor...GO!

I just got back from there with a friend of mine. He swore by the place. As I was under some time restraints, I wasn't all that excited (had to be in Burbank by 4:00). That all changed after I tasted the food. We split the rigatoni in the sweet tomato basil sauce and the rigatoni and pesto. This was the first really good Italian food I've had out here in Los Angeles and I've been here 5 years. The bread that came with the pasta was fresh and deliciously paired with a hot pepper and olive garnish. We also split a huge meatball that was perfect. Unfortunately, no time or room for dessert but I'll definitely return (maybe tomorrow). Gotta try the apple pie. The parking, pet, and credit card issues that others have with the place are immaterial in light of how good the food and service is.

The food is fairly good and they have one of the sweetest sauces I have ever had. Do not eat the red velvet cake, as it is not the best. There are only two real issues I have with this establishment and they are: 1) The fact the staff does not really know health code but will cite it as the reason you cannot sit on the curb with your dog and eat. 2) They are so cheap in this day and age that they will not pay transaction fees for credit cards, but will gladly work a deal with an ATM company to split the service charge on the machine inside.
The issue with the pets is a little strange as the seats are not even on an enclosed patio but instead sit literally on the edge of the street. The wait staff stated they could not serve nor allow us to sit outside on the curb with our dog and enjoy our desert. Maybe they should look up the health codes as almost every other restaurant and deli in the City of LA does not seem to fall under this mysterious health code, which they do. I am amazed in a city which is so accepting of pets and prides itself on some tremendous outdoor activities, there would be an owner of any establishment which would deny service to a group with a pet.

The best is chocolate chip, sounds maybe a bit boring, but not here. Sweet vanilla gelato with lots and lots of little chips of chocolate. Also, all the chocolate based ones are amazing. Everything is divine, but I never really get the sorbets. Great coffee too. And bread. The tomato sauce is too sweet.
Added bonus, once saw Jessica Alba and Cash Warren there.

The garlic bread is a loaf of super pungent garlic that can feed a family of 5. If you desire to stuff you face and belly, go for it because the portions are very large, however the pastas and sandwiches are not good and not Italian. No need to elaborate.
""Dessert Only"". I would only come here for dessert, seriously. The Gelato is good, nothing to die for, but good. Coconut favor is good, Tiramisu flavor is so so.
Service is not that great, it is of the ""with a little bit of attitude"" variety.

By far, Al Gelato has the best red sauce and meatballs in LA. The red sauce is on the sweet side and the meatball is herby. I always order the ravioli which has yet to fail me. Service is good, if you understand the Chicago way. The gelato and ice are tasty and rich. It has more of a diner feel and is not fancy, but it is good homestyle food. I love their olive and pepper assortment that is offered with the bread. A great find.
