KFJC is celebrating it's 50th (since 1959!) year on the air. KFJC offers a very diverse programming schedule: Jazz, Noise, Experimental, Ambient, Reggae, Country, Punk Rock, Metal and more. The station focuses on non-commercial music and challenges the listener with music he or she might not always be familiar with. Some os the DJs have a super low key approach since the focus there is the music but there are a few DJs that have built up character that have created quite a following. Captain Jack is the host the of long running "Skulltime for Kids" ( Wednesdays 5-6pm) and presents childrens music and stories in character as a cheeky pirate. Cy Thoth is the host of Firebunker (Thursdays 2-6pm) and blends Metal, Ambient, Noise and Spoken Word, you must hear Cy Thoth to get the full effect of this program. Ophelia Necro is the hostess of "The Suicide Watch" (Sundays 10pm-2am) and provides a creepy backdrop for a lonely Sunday night with a mix of synth-punk, songs about love gone wrong, weird stuff and an old time radio show or "Deadtime Story" at midnight. The station has a few public affairs shows including Dave Emory's "For The Record", a show which explores conspiracy theories. A couple of notes about the programming schedule...There are more than 40 shows during the programming week and most are as different from each other as they can be so if you don't like a show, wait a couple of hours and try again. During the month of May which KFJCers refer to as Mayhem, the DJs are encouraged to present special programming which have ranged from 24hrs of Sun Ra, James Brown, Frank Zappa and Throbbing Gristle, also smaller (as in less time consuming) specials revolving around record labels, bands and even instruments. KFJC is volunteer run and needs help from the community in the form of donations and they have a fundraiser once a year in October. KFJC has traveled to foreign lands and set up really great music events in Japan, New Zealand, The SF bay area, Rhode Island and Texas. They also have some cool merchandise which you can buy off of their website www.kfjc.org
Give KFJC a chance, it will blow your mind!
