There is a reason that I'm a regular here. It starts with the location- it's really the anchor of South Street (one of the funkier parts of Philly). George (the tall grey haired man perched on the ice box behind the bar) is not only the best bartender in Philly, he's in the running for best in the world. JImmy Duffy's Tuesday night quizzo is always entertaining. The regulars provide the pub with true Philly character. It is not unusual to run into a local sports figure or two on any given night (sometimes they may even be dancing the bar top!) The food is excellent and there's a daily happy hour buffet from 5 to 7. See ya there. Be good or be gone.

Great food at really good prices! The first time I went to Mc Manamin's Tavern was when I was working across the street at a gallery that was freezing in the winter. This was before Germantown Avenue was chic like it is now! I had the chili there, and I swear it was the best chili I had ever had! SInce then, I've been there so many times because the food is always on point. The fries are delicious, when they have fish, it's fresh and not at all prepared like a bar. It's just a nice, neighborhood place that you could take a date (if you were so inclined), or go to with your peeps and watch a game!
Personally, this place deserves 10 plus stars across the board. They are consistent, clean, personable and for the most part accommodating. Heads up for yall first timers.....They get busy on weekends and during concert/sporting events so: Reserve in advance. upon entering get a drink at the bar ( cash only) take it to your table when you get there. . I highly recommend their pizza, the antipasto, ribs and bbq sausage. You will add this place to your favorite places.
This place is one of the all time greatest places for a fabulous sandwich and cold pint. If ever you are in Chestnut Hill do not leave without visiting this Institution of Pub Fare. The Schmitter, Tobias, and Dickens are original sandwiches. Don't forget homemade soup. They treat you like family. Can't miss!
I remember the place being a dive bar for punk hardcore shows. It has revamped and the menu is yummy down home greasy southern fare. The fries with bacon gravy is the best. Good beer menu. Upstairs they do shows and downstairs is the sit down restaurant.
Food was very good, especially the Lobster Bisque- salad very hardy- portions were large, and food was well-seasoned. Vegetable were beautifully prepared. Downey's Whiskey Cake was out of this world!! Service was excellent, very good experience!!
Went on a Saturday night. Wasn't really busy. The waitress was nice. The food was good and had large portion sizes. Overall good experience. First Irish place I have been too that had a pizza oven. Saw this place on TV on a makeover show.
Great place! Definitely nice for a group outing or family time. It has a fun atmosphere to relax, the service is pleasant, and the food can't be beat. I don't always come to Downey's, but when I do I can count on a good time.
Best neighborhood bar in South Philly. Friday night is Karaoke night with Karaoke Host DJ Lars. At 9 pm. Saturday live music. And The First Saturday of every month is The Famous Rage Band 3 pm. No Cover.
Your lobster dinner is absolutely the best value and taste. Add a small salad and it's heaven! Thank you, we will be repeat customers. (Blonde hostess was the best! Soo accommodating.)
