Dental Care
Dental Care- Dental problems in horses can contribute to pain, decreased appetite, poor performance, and weight loss. To prevent these problems, routine floating and balancing is performed using either a Swiss float or power float. The advantage of using power floating equipment is that it allows us to more precisely correct dental abnormalities.
Vaccination
Equine Encephalomyelitis (Sleeping Sickness): Encephalomyelitis is caused by a virus, which is transmitted by mosquitos. The virus causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord and is often fatal. Stricken horses may lose their appetite, display excitable or compulsive behavior and walk blindly into objects. Surviving horses may suffer permanent damage. There are three strains of the virus. Eastern (EEE) is the most deadly, killing 75-100% of infected horses. Western (WEE) is more common and somewhat less virulent. Both EEE and WEE can occur throughout the U.S., and horses should be vaccinated for both. Vaccination advisories for the Venezuelan strain (VEE) have been issued for horses in the southern states, especially those bordering Mexico. The vaccine is very effective against the disease. We typically recommend administering the vaccine annually.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Tonometry- This is a procedure that measures the pressure within the eye and is useful in detecting glaucoma and uveitis.
Behavioral Counseling
Behavioral Counseling: We can provide advice regarding the correction of problems such as excessive barking, chewing, spraying, scratching, digging, house soiling and aggression.
Nutritional Counseling
Equine Influenza (Flu): Influenza is a highly contagious virus that appears suddenly and causes high fever, coughing, nasal discharge and loss of appetite. Infected horses should be kept at complete rest to avoid complications such as pneumonia. The virus mutates into new strains over time, and several distinct strains are now circulating in the U.S. All horses should receive a vaccine containing the most current influenza strains available. The vaccine is not 100% effective, and the protection lasts only 10-12 weeks. Horses travelling to shows, sales, racing events, etc. should be vaccinated every 6 months. Horses that do not travel should be vaccinated annually.

Herd Health: We offer herd testing for OPP in sheep and CAE in goats. We also offer testing for Johne's disease in both species. We offer annual Brucellosis and Tuberculosis testing for show and milking animals. We can also help you to design a parasite control plan to suit the needs of your herd.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Babesia caballi. These organisms are mainly transmitted by ticks, but can also be spread between horses by contaminated needles, transfusions, etc. Clinical signs include: weakness, loss of appetite, fever, anemia, weight loss, jaundice and edema. Horses who survive this condition may carry and shed the parasite for long periods of time and can infect other horses mainly via tick exposure. Diagnosis of this condition is through ELISA blood tesing. Due to the seriousness of this condition, infected animals must be reported and mandatory testing is required for events such as the AQHA World Show and Quarterhorse Congress. No vaccine is currently available. Though treatment is possible, it requires special regulatory permission.

Laboratory: Our in-house laboratory is equipped for most routine blood and urine testing. In addition, we have the ability to culture milk and other samples in-house to reduce cost and provide rapid results for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial infections. When necessary, samples can be sent to an outside lab for more specialized testing.

Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Orthopedic Foundation for Animals The initial mission of this organization was to screen animals for canine hip dysplasia. Over the years, it has evolved to include screenings and certifications for many other inherited, genetic diseases. To minimize the spread of serious genetic diseases, breed specific OFA screenings and certifications are recommended for all breeding animals. If you are considering breeding or adopting a new puppy, this site will also let you know what screening tests are recommended for each breed.

Cardiology Services: We offer ECG services, and other necessary procedures for the diagnosis and management of cardiac conditions.

Wound and Fracture Care
Surgical Services: We are experienced in the latest techniques for field treatment of displaced abomasums, abomasal torsions, umbilical hernias and uterine prolapse. We can also perform c-sections in the field when necessary for the treatment of dystocia. Additional procedures include dehorning and laceration repair.

Dental Surgery
Dentistry: Our preventative dental services include teeth cleaning and polishing, tooth extractions and minor oral surgery to promote overall health. We are also proud to offer digital dental radiography to our patients.

Small Animal Surgery
Dr. Szymkowicz also spends a couple days in the clinic working with small animals and especially enjoys educating clients on preventative medicine and small animal surgery.
Spaying and Neutering
Clostridium tetani ) which usually enters the body through wounds from barbed wire, dropped nails or even surgical procedures such as castration. The bacteria is commonly found in horse manure. Tetanus is characterized by spasmodic contractions and rigidity of some or all of the voluntary muscles (especially of the jaw, face and neck). Affected horses can also suffer from high fever, violent reactions to sudden movement or noise and even death from asphyxiation. The disease is almost always fatal. The vaccine is very effective and administered once yearly. The vaccine is also boostered in case of laceration, surgery or pentrating wounds.

Laboratory: Our in-house laboratory facilities provide for serum chemistry, hematology, serology, urinalysis and parasite testing. We also utilize commercial veterinary laboratories for specialized diagnostics and consultations.
X-Ray
The small animal portion of the practice offers complete wellness care, dentistry, digital radiography, surgery and hospitalized patient care. Our pharmacy stocks most needed medications and we carry several varieties of prescription diets for both cats and dogs. We have two to three veterinarians working in the clinic daily and a caring and knowledgeable staff to meet your needs. For regular, established clients, limited after-hours

Small Animal Vet
In his spare time Dr. Miletta enjoys hunting, beekeeping and working around the house. Dr. Miletta is happily married to a small animal veterinarian and has one daughter. His pets include a furry dog, a quarter horse and a flock of chickens. At Lisbon Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Miletta spends most of his time on the road treating large animal patients. His special interests include: equine lameness and large animal field surgery.
Large Animal Vet
Large animal technicians work both in the office and on the road with a large animal veterinarian. While on the road, large animal technicians will assist in patient care and must be comfortable working with horses, cattle, pigs, camelids, and small ruminants. There may also be opportunities to work with chickens, waterfowl, honeybees, and some exotic species. On the farm duties may include: patient handling/restraint, sample collection, surgical assisting, medication administration, patient monitoring, radiography, record keeping, billing, and client communication. In-clinic duties include: running laboratory samples, preparing samples for submission to outside reference labs, client communication, as well as maintaining inventory and equipment. Large animal technicians may also spend time coordinating care and communication between the office, large animal veterinarians, and clients. Proficiency in performing minor medical procedures such as IV catheter placement and bandaging is also expected. Some heavy lifting is required. Applicants must have a degree in animal health technology from a school approved by the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board or a school recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Applicants must be eligible and/or currently registered with the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board.
