Vaccination
We will also want to consult with you about changes that need to be made as your pet ages. We might adjust dosages of medications as your pet’s metabolism changes. Vaccination schedules might need to be altered. Parasite prevention will become even more important, because as your pet ages, their immune system becomes weaker and they can’t fight off diseases spread by parasites as effectively. The most common internal medicine issues our veterinarians treat are cancer, obesity, diabetes, osteoarthritis, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease and Addison’s disease. If your pet’s health issue requires a specialist, we have connections with veterinary professionals in the area and region who specialize in a range of disorders. They have access to specialized diagnostic or treatment tools that a general practice veterinarian does not have.
Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Treating pain goes far beyond prescribing medications. We also turn to alternative treatments that have proved to be effective, depending on the cause of pain. For problems like joint pain, arthritis or hip dysplasia, all common in older pets, we might recommend prescription food if a pet’s weight is a contributing issue. Heat and cold therapy, physical therapy and exercise can also help relieve certain pain issues.

One of the most common health issues we see in pets – obesity – is directly tied to nutrition or underlying health issues. As with people, overweight pets face a multitude of health problems, including diabetes, joint and mobility problems, heart issues and strokes.

There are several reasons an ECG/EKG might be ordered. If our veterinarians hear an irregularity as they listen to your pet’s heart through a stethoscope or if your pet has symptoms of heart issues, such as fainting, we might order the test. If your pet takes a medication that can impact heart function, we would use the ECG/EKG to check their heart periodically and ensure heart function is not being adversely affected.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Raisins and grapes can lead to kidney failure in pets, even though we are still not sure about the substance that is responsible for this. However, until we find more information regarding this substance, we strongly recommend that you do not feed these fruits to your pet.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
By the time your pet is three, they typically will show signs of periodontal disease. There are ways to avoid problems, such as brushing your pet’s teeth regularly using a toothpaste specially formulated for animals (human toothpaste will do more damage than good) and a soft brush (we recommend a brush designed for pets). Some chew toys and treats also can help to naturally prevent the build-up of tartar and plaque.

Our veterinarians perform a variety of surgical procedures that your pet might require, and for those that require a specialist, we have strong alliances with specialty surgery centers and will assist with referrals. Our clinic’s dedicated surgical suite is outfitted with current equipment and our post-surgical recovery area is staffed with technicians specifically trained to work with pets who have had surgical procedures. Among the procedures our veterinarians perform include spaying and neutering, pyometra surgeries, removal of growths or foreign bodies, splenectomies, amputations, orthopedic surgeries such as: spinal (neck/back) surgery, ACL repairs and fractured/broken bone repairs. We also perform bladder cystotomies, anal sac removal, ectropion/entropion (eyelid surgery), third eyelid/cherry eye replacements, Perineal Urethrostomies (PU surgery), biopsies, caesarian sections, ear hematoma repairs, eye enucleations, and GDV (also known as twisted stomach or gastric torsion) procedures.

Depending on your pet’s health issue, our veterinarians will conduct an examination and discuss with you the course of action as far as which diagnostic tests they would like to perform to make a diagnosis. This might include routine blood work, X-rays, ultrasound and other diagnostic tests.

Statistics show that microchips improve the odds of being reunited with a lost pet. For example, more than half of dogs that are microchipped and are taken to an animal shelter are returned to their owner, far more than those without microchips. Almost 40 percent of microchipped cats are returned to their owner, compared to 2 percent of cats that aren’t microchipped.
