Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Southern Maryland Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center 's Hand Surgeons provide diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of hand and wrist problems including trauma, occupational injuries, arthritis, neuropathies such as carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndrome, cysts, and congenital problems. From tennis elbow to tendon repair, our physicians’ primary goal is to return patients to maximal function as quickly as possible.

Dr. Travis has numerous peer reviewed publications in the medical and basic science literature. He teaches upper extremity anatomy to medical students and musculoskeletal ultrasound to orthopaedic and hand surgeons at national and international meetings.
MRI
Diagnosing joint injuries and disease begins with a thorough medical history, physical examination, and usually X-rays. Additional tests such as an MRI, or CT scan also may be needed. Through the arthroscope, a final diagnosis is made which may be more accurate than through "open" surgery or from X-ray studies.

Computed Tomography
The most common symptom of spinal injuries is pain. Some injuries may damage spinal nerves that may cause inflammation, loss of muscle control and loss of sensation. Symptoms may proceed to paralysis, limited movement, and immobility. Workplace injuries are diagnosed using X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, and magnetic-resonance imaging (MRI) scans.

Spinal decompression is a procedure of relieving pressure on one or many “pinched nerves” of the backbone. It can be achieved either by surgical or non-surgical method. It is used to treat conditions that cause chronic backache like herniated disc, disc bulge, sciatica, spinal stenosis.
Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure in which an arthroscope is inserted into a joint. Arthroscopy is a term that comes from two Greek words, arthro-, meaning joint, and -skopein, meaning to examine.
Pinched Nerve
Laminectomy: This is a procedure in which a small portion of the roof of the spinal bone is removed to relieve pressure on pinched nerve. This is performed as a last resort, when conservative treatment fails to provide relief from back pain.
Ankle Surgery
Following residency, Dr. Turner served six years as an orthopaedic surgeon with the U.S. Navy. She has been stationed at multiple duty stations including Puerto Rico, Portsmouth, Virginia and Naples, Italy. She also deployed to Iraq with the U.S. Marines in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During her tenure as a Naval officer, Dr. Turner did extensive work in foot and ankle surgery and was involved in the teaching and training of orthopaedic residents.
Joint Replacement
When only some of the joint is damaged, a surgeon may be able to repair or replace just the damaged parts. When the entire joint is damaged, a total joint replacement is done. To replace a total hip or knee joint, a surgeon removes the diseased or damaged parts and inserts artificial parts, called prostheses or implants.
Hand Surgery
Dr. Travis is a United States Army combat veteran, US Army Flight Surgeon and a US Navy trained Diving Medical Officer who retired after over 30 years of military service. During his time in the military he served in a wide variety of positions including Chief of Hand Surgery and Director of Research at a residency teaching program as well as numerous operational assignments. He held academic appointments as an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Associate Professor of Anatomy.
Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. Perry is an orthopaedic surgeon certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery with over 25 years’ experience, specializing in treating injuries and disorders of the foot and ankle in children and adults. He received his medical degree and residency from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and has treated patients in hospital-based clinics as well as private practice, with additional experience in treating emergency patients with orthopedic trauma. With his advanced training and expertise, he was appointed to the faculty at the University of South Alabama and the University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine, teaching student physicians for the past 23 years, and lecturing around the country to provide continuing medical education to other physicians in orthopaedics. He is a member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and has written scholarly articles and textbook chapters, and is an examiner for the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He has provided charity care for the people in Haiti and volunteer medical support at sporting events.

After leaving the Navy, Dr. Turner completed a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. This fellowship allowed her to gain additional expertise in hip and knee replacement surgery as well as advanced training in Foot and Ankle surgery.
