In some cases, we might order an imaging test such as an X-ray or ultrasound to get a clearer look at the situation and rule out any other types of problems.

And, as always, youâ€™ll have to closely monitor your blood glucose level. This is important in diabetic wound care because high blood glucose levels can lead to small blood vessel disease. This condition limits the flow of blood, which carries oxygen and nutrients to heal the area.

Dr. Sabers is a board-certified surgeon specializing in podiatric medicine and surgery. He grew up in Ames, Iowa, and attended the University of Northern Iowa where he majored in biomedical biology and minored in chemistry. After college, he obtained his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Des Moines University in Des Moines, IA. Dr. Sabers then completed a three-year surgical residency where he underwent extensive training in foot and ankle surgery. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids, traveling, cycling, basketball and golf.

However, once the bunion starts to cause daily pain or keeps you from participating in activities you used to enjoy, surgery is usually inevitable. However, itâ€™s not all bad news, because our office specializes in a sophisticated form of bunion surgery that offers much faster recovery and better long-term results than conventional approaches!
Joint Replacement
Â arthrodesis Â and is typically used for smaller joints in older patients with more severe deformities or arthritis. Although this permanently prevents joint motion, it also stops the pain with relatively minimal limitation of mobility. Itâ€™s also less likely to need a revision surgery than a joint replacement (which may last only 10-20 years).

The vast majority of bunions are believed to be genetically inherited to at least some degree. Essentially, you were likely born with a certain foot shape or structure that is prone to developing the kinds of joint instability that ultimately lead to bunion formation.

Instead of growing out like normal, the side or corner of a toenailâ€”usually, but not always, on the big toeâ€”digs sideways into the flesh. The result is pain, swelling, serious discomfort wearing shoes, or even infection (especially if you have diabetes).
Reconstructive Surgery
However, when the basic structure of your foot has been severely compromised, reconstructive surgery may be the only real solution. Until the alignment issues are fixed, pain and injury will continue or keep returning.

Hammertoe surgery is typically performed in an outpatient setting. There are a variety of surgical techniques that may be used, including tendon transfers, joint resection, or in some cases joint fusion. Weâ€™ll discuss all your options with you, including any pros or cons of each, so you can be confident in your choice. Regardless of the procedure, the long-term results are very good to excellent for the vast majority of patients.Â
