Veneers
The ads you are seeing may be for veneers. They cover crooked teeth and mask the problem, but do not address the structure in the mouth or how the upper and lower teeth meet. Veneers are not permanent. Many require removal of significant amounts of tooth enamel. If plaque collects where the veneer and the remaining natural tooth meet, the area will be susceptible to what is known as “recurrent decay.” Orthodontic treatment is far more than simply treating how teeth look. It’s about aligning teeth and jaws so that they meet and function effectively. It just so happens that when teeth and jaws are functioning well, they look good, too.
Dental Bonding

A clear-removable retainer will serve as your upper retainer. It should be worn every night. You must be very careful when handling your upper retainer, as it is fragile and costly to replace. You are given a special case for your retainer; please make sure you keep it in this case when it is not being worn! To clean the retainer, brush it with toothpaste (sometimes with denture cleaner) using warm water. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far.

Most of the time orthodontics alone will correct minor jaw discrepancies. In other time orthodontics in conjunction with temporary anchorage device (temporary pin that places in the bone to help anchorage) will correct a lot of severe cases. However, in very few cases orthognathic surgery may be needed to correct severe jaw discreapncies. These surgeries applies most common to class 2 skeletal, class 3 skeletal, and crossbites. Some people may choose not to correct them, but for others it is quite a life changing experience. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities. A poor bite can lead to issues such as TMJ, speech problems and difficult chewing properly. With the help of orthognathic surgery in conjunction with braces, your bite and face can be drastically improved.

Dr. Nguyen was a medical student before he attended Georgia State University where he received his degree in Chemistry with Magna Cum Laude. He then pursued his Chemical Engineering degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he graduated with Highest Honors. Upon graduation, he attended the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine; while there he also won many awards and was ranked #1 clinician in his class. After dental school he completed three years of post-graduate training in orthodontics at the Medical University of South Carolina.
