Microperimetry is a type of visual field test which uses one of several technologies to create a â€œretinal sensitivity mapâ€ of the quantity of light perceived in specific parts of the retina. Visual field testing is widely used to monitor pathologies affecting the periphery of vision such as glaucoma. During a conventional visual field test, patients are asked to look steadily ahead at a visual target while small lights are projected at varying intensities in different locations to examine the peripheral vision. By contrast, microperimetry examines the very center of the retina (the macula) in great detail. It combines fundus imaging and retinal sensitivity mapping in one examination and is a powerful tool to detect, describe and monitor conditions that affect the macular area.

Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD or AMD) is the most common condition affecting people age 65 years and older, with as many as 11 million people in the United States diagnosed with some degree of AMD.
Laser Eye Surgery
In many cases, patients report a history of recent eye surgery, such as cataract surgery. In these patients, post-operative inflammation promotes the leakage of fluid from tiny blood vessels in the macula. Other common causes of CME include diabetic retinopathy, wet age-related macular degeneration, uveitis, and retinal vascular disease.Â CME can also occur due to mechanical traction from a macular pucker. Less common causes include past exposure to radiation, retinitis pigmentosa, and intraocular tumors.
Cataracts
Patients may experience some pain or scratchy sensations after the injection. Occasionally patients may develop subconjunctival hemorrhage (bleeding on the surface of the white of the eye), floaters, increased eye pressure, and/or inflammation of the eye. These side effects typically resolve spontaneously or can be treated with eye drops. Other less common risks include infection, bleeding in the eye, retinal tears or detachment, and cataract formation.
Cataract Surgery
Although this procedure is quite safe, there are certain risks associated with any surgical procedure. Some of these risks include retinal tears or detachment, fluid buildup, growth of new blood vessels, infection, and bleeding. Cataract formation is often accelerated in patients that have not previously had cataract surgery.

Internal Medicine
Dr. Dunn received his undergraduate degree from Amherst College before graduating from The University of Medicine and Dentistry-New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ in 1984. He then completed an internship in internal medicine at The North Carolina Baptist Hospital/Wake Forest University, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at New York University from 1985-88. He subsequently undertook fellowships in Cornea and External Disease at the Jules Stein Eye Institute/UCLA School of Medicine and Cornea and Uveitis at the Francis I. Proctor Foundation/UC San Francisco. He was board certified in Ophthalmology in 1990. He was an Instructor in Ophthalmology at Proctor from 1990-91. He then joined the Division of Ocular Immunology at The Wilmer Eye Institute of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1991, where he was Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology from 1991-96 and Associate Professor from 1996-2003. He has served for many years as the Johns Hopkins site principal investigator for several multicenter trials sponsored by the National Eye Institute, including the Studies of Ocular complications of AIDS and the Multicenter Uveitis Steroid Trial.

Ultrasound
Blood tests or other diagnostic tests such as an ultrasound of the heart and neck may be warranted. Sometimes a blood thinning medication such as aspirin, Plavix, or Coumadin is prescribed to reduce the risk of new clots and blockages. Although this would not help improve sight in the affected eye it could have long-term benefit for your general health.
